I read up a bit on farming and whatnot, since some people were complaining about seeds popping out of the ground.

Apparently the world is modeled like the real world... Z-axis is north/south, while x-axis is east/west. Currently we're at Z=13,000 at the base camp. That means we're 13,000 blocks north of the equator, and the temperatures are between 1.0 and 6.0 degrees Celcius (press F3 for this information).

Long story short... base camp is great for sequoias, but if anyone was wondering why everything was a drab gray color, it's because we're settled at the north end of Yellowstone park.

I don't know what season it is right now but I'm guessing we're not even Fall, considering one year is 92 Minecraft days for this mod.

So... who wants to make an expedition to the equator and rough it like the pioneers of old, killing cows and pigs for sustenance while fending for our lives at nighttime?

Thanks Pogo. That explains why I can't get any taters growing. It must be fall, because I've been gathering plants and been able to eat them. At least, that would be logical. I'm signing in right now and would love to figure out which direction is north. I think I'll grab that minimap mod.
  3. Pogo Hard Cider Gal

Oh, and world generation is a bit bugged in that it will spawn plants in ungrowable temperature conditions, so you'll find stuff to eat that you might now be able to plant.

Sun/moon rise in the East and set in the West.
  4. Nate Worked The System

    Good tip ;)

Also, experiencing horrible lag today on my new machine. Rather similar to this guy.

    Try using Magic Launcher:
    http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/939149-launcher-magic-launcher-100-mods-options-news/

Under setup, advanced tab, set the memory values to 512

People seem to think that java can use all your ram, but it never will, and it can get unstable when using more than 1gb, so I set it to 512 and everything works fine, ironically.

Looks like it's autumn, and also my peach trees have bloomed:

Your moon looks way cooler than mine.
  7. Wader Beer

So, given what Pogo said about the latitude, does that mean we might want a new spawn?
  8. Pogo Hard Cider Gal

Or a minecart rail that spans an entire ocean.
  9. Kat Keeper of the Elemental Materials

Im up for lots of mining with a minimum of crafting :3

The N key displays the calendar. And crops and plants take in game months to mature.

edit:hmmm, I think if you can plant something it should be able to grow. Plants pop out of the ground near the poles.
  11. Pogo Hard Cider Gal

Well, I lost all my tomato plants so... yeah.

This... is the opposite of Terrafirma.

The world spawn point is pretty much always somewhere in the middle of the northern hemisphere, so if you want to check out the tropics, you've got a long trek ahead. Get those suitcases packed! I think in SP you're pretty much expected to wander afar and find new areas and resources.

Mining's a bit tougher in TFC and plenty of crafting is needed, but added, if you still want to check it out.
  13. DocLazy Beer

Mining is much, much tougher. As you can dig for ages and find nothing. But when you do find find a vein it's like christmas, and they are proper veins of ore not speckled everywhere like vanilla.
  14. Pogo Hard Cider Gal

I wouldn't dare mine without prospecting. That part is pretty fun but I'm in a pretty big cave system right now and haven't found anything.

Digging tunnels aimlessly... not a very good way to find ore.
  15. Jason T Keeper of the Elemental Materials

Would be neat to check this out - jtownsend2k

For newcomers, definitely take the time to go through the steps of the tutorial on the wiki for Terrafirma. There are a couple. You may see chests full of copper ingots and stuff but you won't have any idea how to actually do anything with them, since the crafting is a world apart from vanilla.

Tree trunks > planks > instant tools is no longer the name of the game. Since you're required to learn knapping stone to make tools, you may have to go away from the starting area to start gathering the stones that stick out from the dirt that you need. Otherwise, you can grab Dolomite, Shale, or Mudstone from my chest to start off (please don't use the marble or basalt, those don't come easily and they will be my building blocks for a house).

Learn how to make and throw javelins ASAP. Until you have leather armor you're going to get your ass kicked at night away from base camp.

On the plus side, cows AND pigs drop tons of meat and leather, so if you can find them definitely get a couple.

Second following the get started guide on the wiki.

I originally found this cave system by accident after I was doing some surface prospecting (by picking up stones) and found a zinc deposit.

    Big coal vein is big.

  18. Pogo Hard Cider Gal

Yeah I wish I woulda known about that sooner, if you find ore from a ground stone that means there is ore directly under it in the world. If you have a bunch of ladders you can dig down and grab it up before coming back up.

Assuming you don't die to a cave in, of course, so it's good to go use the sawblade at base to cut some logs into support beams while you mine out ore.

And good fucking god that is a lot of zinc, but that's the type of generation you get in Terrafirma, very large ore veins spread out more widely.

So, I tried sticking both the zips for Rei's minimap and TFC my C:\minecraft director, (as zips) and then "added" them in magicloader. Both had red text under "status," Rei's reading "No ModLoader" (but I'm in a modloader?) and TFCraft-Universal-Core-B2-Build66.zip reading "No Forge."

I haven't used magicloader or mods before so I may be missing something quite basic.
  20. Pogo Hard Cider Gal

Yeah you didn't download Forge or Modloader. I wouldn't bet on Modloader+Rei's Minimap working, but Nate might be using that successfully. Magic Launcher is NOT Modloader.

    http://terrafirmacraft.com/download/

You're also going to need to use Minecraft 1.4.2, not 1.4.4 which is the current version. I think there's a program called MultiMC that will download older versions of Minecraft.
  21. Jason T Keeper of the Elemental Materials

    Thanks kindly.
  22. Jason T Keeper of the Elemental Materials

Ok, so I guess you create/run an instance using MultiMC and then it has a built in version of MCNostalgia that'll downgrade that "instance" (in its own directory) down to a build of your choice, so I did that to 1.4.2. I then tried using Magic Launcher, pointing the the .jar selector to the 1.4.2 .jar in the instance director, which it picked up as 1.4.2 as desired. I then tried adding minecraftforge-universal-6.0.1.355.zip as the "forge" mod and it came up with "1 errors," not sure why - that was the last version of forge correlating with 1.4.2 on the list of version of forge.

In spite of that error when I then added TFC it came up as "ok," presumably seeing that Forge was (sort of) present, but minecraft crashed when I tried to run it. With TFC removed but forge added (with the 1 errors indication) the game runs, showing 3 mods loaded in-game.

If you're following the instructions I linked, it's all done in MultiMC. If you'd prefer to use Magic Launcher, I think Pogo knows how to set it up there.
  24. Nate Worked The System

I am not using that successfully at all. The minimap has not worked for me.
  25. Nate Worked The System

Also, this guy needs a few lessons in rock hardness. Igneous is nowhere near as hard as metamorphic rock.
  26. DocLazy Beer

  27. Jason T Keeper of the Elemental Materials

I think that's what I was missing. The forge mod still shows its enigmatic "1 errors" but the other 2 load ok and the game's running TFC now. Be on the server javelining dudes momentarily.
  28. DocLazy Beer

Rei's minimap works with forge. You might need to delete any old configs you have to get it to work. Well I did for some reason.

Try quitting and relaunching, sometimes the Mojang servers think you have an old login token in certain cases.

    There's now a map up here: http://lt.planetcrushers.com/map/

It's incomplete and inaccurate in a lot of ways (some TFC-specific items missing, biome colours and terrain textures wrong), but it gives you a general sense of the lay of the land at least.

I went on a north pole expedition yesterday and it turns out there's no actual barrier at the north end, but it just turns into an infinite ice sheet with barely any land and no vegetation at all. I had to bunny-hop on ice and then swim a large chunk of the way back since I broke my boat on the ice sheet and there wasn't any wood past around -17k or so.
  34. Nate Worked The System

That's my island down south! And there's a little house on another island about halfway between that I built for temporary shelter.

I will javelin any invaders to death. Please do not wear armor when approaching.
  35. DocLazy Beer

I think I'm in love, with this mod. It's surprisingly well balanced and has a nice progression. It has just the right amount of grind to make accomplishing something feel worthwhile. But not so much that doing something again feels like an exercise in frustration. It also has my current favorite tool in minecraft, the chisel. Being able to carve out blocks is something, along with cave ins, that should've been added to vanilla.

Please excuse me while I get back to work, covering Nate's island in ornately carved phallic statues. j/k

My gaming laptop just had a short circuit and my attempts to break that short by dremeling directly into the circuit board isn't working, so I'm not going to be on for a little while until I get my desktop PC, which should be really soon.

I just really want to get back into that cave and finish prospecting it. I would really love to hit iron... although I'm not sure if weapon damage is based on material at all in this mod.
  37. HalibutBarn Armchair Designer

It does seem to make a difference, as monsters are definitely dying faster to my bronze sword than they were to my zinc one.

But speaking of iron, I exhausted the copper cave out east and started digging straight under my island mining base, and I've hit a fairly large supply of hematite, gold, saltpeter, olivine, and cinnabar all pretty close together (the entrance is on my island about 500 blocks east of spawn, if anyone wants to go mining). I've upgraded the anvil back at spawn to wrought iron, and with iron we can now make rails and shears, at least. And you can turn the cinnabar into redstone, if anyone wanted to wire up their CPU simulator...

Now we're just missing nickel and silver to get at the highest-tier metals, though then it starts to get really annoying with all of the intermediate alloying tiers.
  38. Pogo Hard Cider Gal

Considering how effective even leather armor is against taking damage, I'm thinking a suit of copper is sufficient for protection. I think the real goal is making a sword or mace out of the highest tier possible. I'm going to have to work on making a bronze sword. Copper sword still takes a good 5 hits to kill a zombie or skeleton, which is actually less damage than throwing javelins (but not as big of a pain in the ass).

It feels like your stamina should decrease depending on how much you're carrying, considering all inventory items have a weight and size, but I'm not seeing a difference.

I did some scouting around south last night, and it seems that with TFC it's pretty rare to find relatively flat, open areas. Otherwise it's mostly hills, mountains, and forests, at least as far north as we are. The best I've found so far is around this area, though there's not much wood nearby either.

Yeah, but who likes flat, open areas? Give me mountains any day. Except when I fall off of them.
