OK, I just fell one block and died. Full health, full armor, headed home with a full load including one and a half stacks of copper ore that I had gathered from ground rocks. RAGE!

So is that a bug, or a weird property of carrying the metal, or...?

I think it's just a bug. I thought at first it might be related to the weight you're carrying, but I can fill up my inventory with stacks of heavy items and only take the usual small bit of damage when dropping down a few blocks.
  6. Pogo Hard Cider Gal

There's plenty of flat land to the south of spawn.
  7. Pogo Hard Cider Gal

Well, I made it to 0,0, built a little monument and uhh... yeah. It's 44°C, nice and toasty, and I haven't seen a tree for at least 2,000 blocks now. It's not very hospitable, seems like temperature kills your hydration meter very quickly. Somewhere around -6,000z seemed much more hospitable with its islands and more lush landscapes. I gathered a lot of foreign crops along the way, including seeds and some fruit tree saplings, but I think I'll go back north along the prime meridian (x=0) and set up shop somewhere less... barren.

Don't suppose you found my death spew at or around 0,0?
  9. Pogo Hard Cider Gal

    Your death spew?

Conclusion is that although there are definitely caves to explore (I even found a gorge), and some foreign plants to be found, the 4,000z to equator area isn't particularly conducive to living without trees. I suppose I could go back and grab a ton of saplings and start populating it, but there was a good landmass somewhere around -6,000 that had a variety of trees on it and a good temperature for possibly growing crops.
  10. Nate Worked The System

Ugh. Too grindy for me. Dying before you get going sets you back hours of play time. I'm rather tired of gathering and would like to get to mining someday.

Is that other server getting started?

Yeah I think I just found the same area, around +1400, -6300 or so (here on the map), where there's a cobblestone pillar that somebody obviously left there, with some pretty funky hills to the west and more open area to the north. I'll probably start moving my stuff to around there.
  12. Pogo Hard Cider Gal

Hah, cool map. I can see that I'm the second person to travel straight south, someone else (Nute?) traveled more along x=-400 while I traveled x=0. I can also see the big jungle (kapak trees) that I had to traverse through.

I have to agree with you, that whole bay you centered on seems like a good place for a new world. I'll probably head back up to that location. It's kind of a pain in the ass running at the equator because your hydration meter depletes so quickly.

My computer crapped out, so I'm running on 32-bit XP which is a huge pain in the ass to play Minecraft on, I'll be upgrading my OS soon but I'm still waiting on updates for Better World Generation to make that vanilla server. I want to use Bukkit plugins to somehow make two worlds, one cave world that people can port to if they want a bit of an interesting challenge, and a Skylands world.
  13. DocLazy Level 90 Paladin

    That would be me.

I accidentally looked at an enderman when I got to 0,0 and with my crappy connection they are impossible to fight with out taking massive damage.

You can help yourself to a pick, or two, in my treehouse if you want. Once you get your first pick and find a vein of ore the game becomes much less grindy.
  14. Pogo Hard Cider Gal

Yeah sorry, your stuff's been long gone. Hell it took me like 5 in-game days to get there.
  15. Nate Worked The System

Yup, that's marking a copper deposit. Enjoy. Since I don't think I can force myself to attempt making another pick.
  16. Pogo Hard Cider Gal

The map is a bit off from in-game coords by about 100 blocks along the z-axis.

I think it's either calculating it based on the mouse cursor pointing at the bedrock at that location, not the surface, or that the surface is at the standard height of 64 instead of TFC's higher value.
  18. Pogo Hard Cider Gal

    Ahh yeah, good theory.

I've moved most of my stuff close to where Nate is now, and I'm taking the kidsanvil with me! Hopefully that doesn't mess up anyone else's work, though I think I'm the only one working on steel and above and the iron anvil still at spawn should be good enough for anything below that. Now I just need to find some damn nickel before we can break into black/blue/red steel...

TFC has been updated to the latest minecraft, along with some useful much needed additions to the hoe. Farming is kind of broken in the current build, it's impossible to know when to harvest things. I removed the bloomery at spawn for when you upgrade.

Yeah, with TFC it's generally best to hold off on updates for a few days as he tends to roll out a series of them rather rapidly, with important fixes. Hopefully it stabilizes fairly soon though, as it'll be nice to get some of those fixes in.

I won't be playing again until I get my hands on Windows 7 which has already been ordered. Reloading the game every 5 minutes because Notch doesn't know how to work with 32-bit Java is very annoying.

  24. Pogo Hard Cider Gal

Also... he still didn't add some way to make stairs?
  25. HalibutBarn Armchair Designer

    Location:
    Calgary
You use the chisel to make stairs, though you have to switch it to a specific stair-creation mode and I think you can only do it to blocks in-place.
  26. Pogo Hard Cider Gal

Oh derp, I remembered that, and then forgot it. Still no wood stairs though, and I haven't tried making a cobblestone wall either. Or slabs.
  27. DocLazy Level 90 Paladin

I put in a whole lot of stairs at the spawn area and you do need to put down blocks first. It's one reason I really love the chisel, and it's only going to get better with the work he wants to do on it.

I've updated the server to TFC release 69, which fixes a bunch of things (no more trees missing their bases!) and adds some new features and modes for the chisel and hoe tools. See here for more details, in the 67/68/69 entries.

Installation is pretty much the same as before, except you don't need to downgrade to 1.4.2 now, and you might need to manually fetch the Forge file from here if you're using MultiMC (newer versions aren't showing up in the built-in Forge installer).

Let me know if you run into problems!

Oh, pay attention to this update in B67:
    Notes
    • The bloomery now saves information slightly differently. If you plan to keep using an old world, I advise deconstructing any bloomeries before upgrading to this version just in case of an issues. You’ve been warned.
  30. HalibutBarn Armchair Designer

    Location:

Yeah, I went around and broke all the bloomeries before the update and replaced them afterwards. :) (I think I found them all, but if you have trouble with one, let me know.)

    Oh and we finally have:

which finally lets us move water source blocks around. They're kind of hard to store though, since they don't fit in chests or on tool racks, so for now I've made an extra and am keeping it in the extra slots in the open forge/anvil area at New Spawn. Feel free to borrow that one as needed.
  32. Pogo Hard Cider Gal

Sweet, I don't have to build a farm out by the lake.
  33. Nate Worked The System

I feel like I emerged from my barely-out-of-the stoneage hovel into Paradise! Chickens in a coop instead of free-range! Some sort of metal shaping block! A building that looked like a building instead of hastily thrown up logs! NICE :)
  34. DocLazy Level 90 Paladin

Halibut is it possible to set the servers time when it's restarted? Crops take for ever to grow unless you plant them early year 1000.
  35. Pogo Hard Cider Gal

Right now it's 1 year per day isn't it?

Growth problems are probably my fault; there were a handful of times where I used '/time set 0' to reset it back to dawn, and I only just discovered today that that also resets the calendar back to March 1, 1000. Depending on how it's implemented, it might then have to catch up to the original planting time before any further growth occurs.

Now that I know to avoid that, hopefully growth will be normal from here on. Breaking and replanting any crops will probably get them growing normally again.

I won't apply the update just yet, but there are some nifty new features in the latest updates to TerraFirmaCraft for the artsy types. You can use the chisel on wood now, place thin wood panels, and there's a new chisel mode that lets you take a block and treat it like an 8x8x8 grid and remove individual sub-blocks from that. His sample pic:

On the downside, stone axes are now much less effective at chopping down large trees.
    DocLazy likes this.
  38. DocLazy Level 90 Paladin

Now that is a very cool feature. This mod has suddenly moved into a different league.

The changes to the axe seem a little pointless, as the durability is so low it becomes a pain to keep making them. Even zinc axes last heaps longer.

I've updated the TFC server to build 72. If you were already on build 69, then it's a fairly simple upgrade since you can just replace the TFCraft*.zip file with the newest one; everything else is still the same.

I've also increased the length of the year to triple what it was before, so it's 24 days a month now. The default was really meant for single-player games where time didn't keep ticking away when you weren't playing it, and that should prevent it being pretty much the same season whenever you play if you're always logging in around the same time each day.
  40. Pogo Hard Cider Gal

    That's a good idea.

I'm going to dive back into this but there's so much Far Cry 3 and Witcher 2 to play that I can't tear myself away, so I still only have just a small chest full of some building materials. I should be pleasantly surprised by all the changes, and that chiseling of wood looks awesome.

Does look like he's updating some terrain generation features, though. This is a very quickly changing mod, I hope he nails down whatever generation he wants soon since the time requirement for building a world is so much longer than for vanilla.
