I wasn't expecting the backstab like I should have been. I figured Italy would wait at least one more turn, if they were going to do it.

Well I wasn't expecting you to be a cold hearted liar either, so I guess we both learned our lessons, now didn't we?

Cold-hearted liar? I don't believe I ever lied to you. I left a few things out, sure.

To quote; "Wed 19 Sep Spring, 1901: A stable border with you would benefit me greatly. I'll be aiming south. And keeping an eye on Italy, of course."

    Sooo, yea, a lie ;)

Note the year. That was how many moves ago? At the time, it was truth. And our stable border did benefit me greatly. And you as well, if I recall, since based on that you were able to grab three supply centers.

See, I knew you guys could get together if you really tried. I'm so happy for you, you've grown so much!

Just want to check everyone is still with us.

12 hours left, and a number of players haven't logged in for two days, not worried about time just want to check everyone is doing alright.
  9. Demon G Sides Keeper of the Elemental Materials

Was at NYCC all weekend without access to a computer... and England IMMEDIATELY gets stab happy.

We've reached the point that all Online Diplomacy games get to, where no one really talks except to the people they intended to keep as allies for a long time. This is the point where I start to grow disinterested in the game, as well, so woo I guess.
  10. Nate Worked The System

I'm talking a lot to Italy and Turkey. Mostly cussing, but it still counts.

Nobody wants to talk to me anymore. :(

I thought I'd die way sooner in the other game. It still is going to be a race to the finish.

See, totally evil. Italy is taking over the world!
  14. Demon G Sides Keeper of the Elemental Materials

You know what's worse than shitty allies? People who "Quit" but still sign in so that the turns take longer (Looking at you, Schempp).

Sorry, I should have only done that once. I can resign, I guess.

ETA: On second thought, you definitely shouldn't have called my attention to this. Eat a bag of dicks.
  16. Demon G Sides Keeper of the Elemental Materials

No, seriously, you're probably the worst person alive. Only a real piece of shit would resign from a game, then come back to it just to spite another person.

This is why I hate Online Diplomacy.
  17. Matthew Schempp This Is SEWIOUS

Yeah, that's totally a dick move, don't worry, I'll move out of Paris and go meekly now.

    Or will I?

Hint: If you're going to go the full Machiavelli, you need to go all the way.

Apologized once already but I'll do it again; that comment was rude and I'm sorry.

    Lets hug it out.
  19. Matthew Schempp This Is SEWIOUS

See, you've got to wait until I make my move, otherwise I can change my mind. So now I am totally going to screw you over. Paris is nice this time of year. Or maybe I'll defend Brest again and keep both of them!

*time travel forward another 2 weeks and France has conquered 18 SC's and won the game*

I'd claim part of your victory by being the driving force towards getting you to rejoin!
  21. jovrtn Hivemind Coordinator

I don't want to suggest anyone drop out or stop having all the fun they possibly can, but it did seem odd that the game would let a person quit and then rejoin. Could someone get away with that in a non-web game of Diplomacy? I suspect not (though I've never actually played one, so I'm no authority here).

  22. Nate Worked The System

Not submitting orders means you armies just hold. No support anywhere. I guess technically you could "quit" for a couple turns and then come back to the game if you had to leave for a bit.
  23. fauxgirlfriend This Is SEWIOUS

Matthew Schempp any chance of convincing you to confirm your move, I feel as if I am on a roll.

  27. Nate Worked The System

Aye, well fought, Scribble. You held against the (now crumbling) Russaustrian alliance rather effectively. Also, you fought to the end bitterly! I applaud your tenacity, sir.

  28. Nate Worked The System

Also, world, can we stop the infighting? Italy is closing in on victory and all we're doing is attacking each other. Clearly, if we cannot come together and fight against her as one, we shall fall. I'm damn near out (thank you Russia), and once I'm done, you all are next. No sense cherry-picking supply points in the periphery when she's expanding rapidly through the center.

I propose an anti-Italian alliance! Once she's dead, I'll be happy to duke it out with the rest of you.
  29. fauxgirlfriend This Is SEWIOUS

I am the victim of some very serious betrayal this turn.

How could you even suggest Italy is some sort of threat to the world order.
  30. Nate Worked The System

I can do the maths! 18-12=6 more points you need for victory. That's not a lot, and with all the fighting, you can slip your little fleets in to nab points here and there until you get your 6.
  31. Demon G Sides Keeper of the Elemental Materials

Yeah the whole "I refuse to ever even consider being someone else's ally" trope of WebDiplo rears its ugly head again.

Such is the beast of the game we play.
  32. Nate Worked The System

Way to go England! Continuing to ignore the completely open Iberian peninsula in favor of...coming in second? BRILLIANT!

    gg, fauxgirlfriend.
  33. jovrtn Hivemind Coordinator

It's my opinion that your quick rise seemed to obviate your need to cultivate strong allies. Shared enemies and occasional cooperation makes an alliance of convenience, not something with a firm bedrock. From my side, our interactions always carried the tone of my existence being suffered (not to mention your offhand remarks about my impending doom filtered through multiple sources). We were never allies, but I wasn't about to correct you if you chose to believe that.

  34. Demon G Sides Keeper of the Elemental Materials

No but outright refusal to speak or even return messages is infuriating, and I wasn't blaming you directly. You took the opportunity and it worked well for you; I'm not begrudging your play, trust me you've done well and I'll be the first to tell you that.

It's just been my experience in playing the game both a lot in real life and on the internet have yielded completely different games.
  35. jovrtn Hivemind Coordinator

I am pretty interested in how a face-to-face game would play out, with so much more subtlety in communication going on. Most of the time it didn't seem worth continuing a conversation if it wouldn't affect my plans or if I had no intention of changing my mind. I apologize if it made the game less enjoyable for you :\

  36. Demon G Sides Keeper of the Elemental Materials

In person i'm basically able to corner you through constant pestering and then laying on Charisma! The game loses something in the loss of face to face conversation. It becomes much more mechanical.
  37. Nate Worked The System

    Wait, you have Charisma? ;)

You're right, it's hard to yell at people through the computer. Or make them believe you're meek and innocent. Or cackle at them when you backstab them repeatedly.
Lizard_King and Demon G Sides like this.
  38. jovrtn Hivemind Coordinator

Perhaps charisma in itself can be unfair advantage, with the web version serving to equalize dominant personalities? HMM?

  39. Matthew Schempp This Is SEWIOUS

They are different games. That's all. Both are completely valid games, however (people who are skillful will do better over time).
    Lizard_King likes this.
  40. Demon G Sides Keeper of the Elemental Materials

The game is really dependent on charisma when it comes to the in person game, which came first, so I don't think you can say taking out one of the main ingredients is an equalizer; it's a bastardization, and one that I don't find, personally, very fun.

And in re: validity of the Online game... Not true. I consider myself very skillful at Diplomacy, in just the mechanical sense, and I still lose most games because there is no care for the actual Diplomacy part of the game. The game is based on making and breaking alliances and the online game is more of "well lets just find a neighbor who will agree to not backstab me, and lets duke it out with everyone else," which is, also in my opinion, way less fun.
