Well, it could be, if the Mayans managed to get something right. Minus that whole leap year fuckup. WHOPS!

Anyways, is anyone doing it this year? I haven't joined a team yet; the team I was on last two years seems to have dissolved. Here's my Mo' page for now:

    http://bit.ly/ryanmo

I'll probably start uploading photos and stuff when I get caught up tonite. Debating whether I want to use Posterous again now that they're owned by twitter and totally fucking flaky acting.

I came up with some great ideas for fundraising last year and could only act on a small handful of them, so hopefully I can do more this year. I raised twice in 2011 what I raised in 2010, so that's my goal again this year.

I currently wear what I can grow, which isn't much.

Plus I'm doing NaNoWriMo, and I only have enough room in my schedule for one Mo this month.

You've got my full support though, and expect pictures.

I won't be shaving during November, if that's what you mean.

I'm not sure it counts if you already have a full beard which you've kept for literally decades, though.

Movember: You shave off your facial hair and start growing a mustache while raising funds for men's health issues like testicular cancer and prostate cancer.
There's No-shave November, but those people don't usually raise money for anything, they just look scrubby. You won't look scrubby because, well, existing beard.

I don't even know how I look beardless anymore.

    I'm vaguely tempted.

A small request: If you normally don't wear facial hair and decide to grow some for November, please do NOT grow in a porn stache. PLEASE. Get some other facial hair in there too. Beard. Goatee. Something. Just not a mustache by itself. *shudder*

While not raising money, myself and a few guys at work (all clean shaven) have decided to use this month to see if we can handle facial hair. I'm giving it a few more days before I go nuts.Likewise, things this end of the world are getting warmer, so its really going to be tough.

And SwitchKnitter, I know what you mean. The one time I did grow a stache, yeeesh, it was terrible. This time around, I'm just not shaving at all.

I have run Movember at wok for a few years and again this year. I have been tempted to grow a mo that connects to my sideburns and then, by shaving the rest of my head, continuing the mo all the way around my head in a glorious head-handlebar.

I disagree with Switchknitter. There are plenty of men who can rock a 'stache just fine without any other hirsute accompaniment,

It's all just a matter of taste.

Besides, it's Movember, not Beardvember. Growing out a mustache is meant to draw attention to prostate cancer issues as well as raise money.

The hockey lockout makes me sad, the NHL teams have all been hugely supportive of Movember, and it was always fun seeing what amusing mos that players would grow. :(

I'm happy to donate toward the cause, but I don't do clean-shaven anymore. The last time that happened it was a goddamn travesty.

I am passing on Mo'vember this year - shaving would screw up the cultivated "crazy artist at work, do not bother" image I've been developing at work over the past month.

As someone who recently shaved off his decade old beard (and nearly two decade old sideburns) you actually have to give it some time. Removing your facial is a very dramatic change to your appearance and you really do need time to adjust to how you look before you can really decide if you like it or not. I didn't like how I looked immediately, I just thought I looked strange and not like myself at all. But now it's a non-issue, I'm comfortable with how I look and I actually like it. I've also found that I look quite a bit better without sideburns even though I sported the sideburns look for all of my late teens and early twenties. I'll likely grow my beard back at some point in the future because I do like the way I look with it as well but that won't be for some time I think.

You don't get the point, the entire purpose is mustache only to draw attention. If you're growing a beard along with it you're not really doing the Movember thing at all.

My team at work is doing the No-Shave November thing, and while I agree we're certainly going to look scrubby, we are aware of the men's health issue bit and are making a point to raise awareness with it.

Spirit of the thing rather than the letter, you know? Plus.. beards.

I was going to be really sad if one of these threads did not crop up. Hooray!

I have no idea what Mr. Alligator looks like sans beard. He's had it since high school. I keep telling him that if he gets murdered and his murderer shaves his face, I won't be able to identify him.

So, he's never done No-Shave November, because he won't do a clean shave, let alone Mo'vember.

As others have said, a big part of Movember is looking stupid and therefore giving people the opportunity to say "SWEET CHRIST RYAN, WHAT IS ON YOUR FACE???" at which point you can talk about men's health issues and solicit for donations.

If I wanted to look sexy, well, I'd just look how I do normally.

    DOOOO EEEEET

I haven't had time to set up my goals and stuff yet, but look at this glorious mustache - if I hit certain dollar amounts, I will be rocking something that awesome again this year.

One big thing to keep in mind is that the part of your face under your beard hasn't seen daylight in a while, so it will quite literally be a different color than the rest of you. Give it a week at least - and actually shave during that time, don't get lazy. Then you can get tired of people thinking you're 16 and grow it back.

Well, someone on Facebook just tried to make me feel bad about raising money for prostate and testicular cancer because stomach, colon, and pancreatic cancer have far worse outcomes.

In other news, we might as well not raise money for anything as long as humans are still going to die eventually, right?

Tell the person on facebook that common things occur commonly. Why not raise money and awareness for the most common cancer affecting men? Sure, colorectal cancer is certainly up there as next common, but it isn't specific to one gender. Or just tell said person to fuck off, you're doing a good thing.

I'm mindful of the fact that prostate cancer metastasised to my grandfather's bones, and subsequently went through intense radium treatment to try and stop it. He never was the same man going through that, and only had a short time to live. Thankfully he died quickly doing what he loved best, rather than suffer through a slow lingering death that the cancer would have left him.

I tried to keep my mo but in the end it just had to go :( If I were raising money, it would have been easier, but purely from a couple of workmates saying "let's do it for fun" it became a bit of a hassle in the end. I feel happier now without the facial hair, part of the problem being the days are getting hotter in my part of the world and I'm certainly not used to having hair present that normally doesn't exist. Or to put another way, I'm weak.

I make my own rules. For me, it's not a mustache if it doesn't connect to a central point on the chin. So a Burnside, like I rocked last year, is a mustache in my book.

As for the beard, usually I cut in the stache on Day 8, but this year I couldn't get my shit together in time.

This attitude annoys me. Mostly because several people were all pushing to do Movember back in October with no mention of any house rules about it. Now most of them just have beards of some sort while I'm rocking the 'stach. Some try and make up for it by saying they'll shave off the beard and keep the 'stach at some point towards the end of the month. If you say you're doing Movember do it right damn it!

I'll have you know the beard is killing me with itchiness. I wish I had a mustache already.

I'm trying to maximize my donations though, and the carrot of me having a stupid mustache past Nov 30th is worth it. Did you even read the link?

RyanMM, I want to donate but I am so broke right now... Will they accept donations on, say, the 3rd of December when I have money again?
  38. I will jump in here and say that as long as you have your colonoscopies and know your family history, colon cancer can be quite curable if they catch it early. My mom's mistake was ignoring a family history of colon cancer and skipping a colonoscopy she should have had five years before she was diagnosed. By the time she was having symptoms, it was way too late.
