I've made a private forum for our GLBTQ users as the social group used for that purpose didn't really work, and there was enough interest to merit a new forum (it's safe to say that we have as many gay users as Dark Souls players, at least). Please contact our newest moderator, Neopythia, for access to this forum. If you were a member of the old social group and not New User (aka total lurker) status, you should be grandfathered in.
Egads, sorry about the double posting but for Lum summoning purposes; I can navigate the rainbow connection alright, but when I click on either of the links I get booted back to the original social forum. It supposed to do that? Edit: made a lil visual thingy.
Hey Lum, just a heads-up: maybe you're still getting this sorted behind the scenes, but as it stands this minute, it's looking like I have moderation privileges in the new forum. I was just reading the newest post there and there's a checkbox down at the bottom that opens an overlay when marked, links to Move, Warn, Delete the thread, the Thread Tools drop-down contains numerous additional commands, etc.
KE KE KE KE KE KE I have already liberally sprinkled BF with Solispeakers, soon the time will come when aaallll will know- Ohai, really enjoying our little space you've made Lum! Super styling ;3
In place of the Dark Lord you will set up a Queen. And I shall not be dark, but beautiful and terrible as the Morning and the Night! Fair as the Sea and the Sun and the Snow upon the Mountain! Dreadful as the Storm and the Lightning! Stronger than the foundations of the earth. All shall love me and Despair! ...or not. Seriously, thanks for doing this, Lum!
I have to ask, why make it private? The Bridge Over the River Kawaii is not private, nor is the Sanctum Santorum. Was it by request? Surely, with no more modding than any subforum here there would not be *that* bad of a trolling problem... Just curious (but not in *that* way)...
I would expect that it is private because people would like to keep certain aspects being discussed relatively private. Unlike the two forums you mentioned, being a weirdo or an asshole doesn't carry the same social stigma that the GLBTQ community has to deal with, and some people aren't ready or willing to address stuff in public.
Makes sense. Well, here's to a future where such things are no more... The social stigma, not GLBTQ. This is why I am not a public speaker...
You'd better be careful. Next, they'll come for the people who keep messing up intelligent threads with the stupid.
This. It's kinda sad that, even at a friendly place like Lum's, GLBTQ folks still need a private forum. Regardless, sweet idea of our avian overlord to give you one, and long may Neopythia reign over the realms both cis and trans, the rivers straight and crooked, and I'm really running out of similes here, whatever, congrats is what I'm trying to say :).
Pah! As if hiding your LBGTQ threads behind an invite-wall is going to stop them from being polluted by discussions about Tom Chick, Mass Effect, Dark Souls or Tom Chick playing Mass Souls.
Inevitably, and sadly, they probably do need a private forum but I'm not aware of any drama in GLBTQ threads in the main forum. Then again, I'm not aware of any GLBTQ threads in the main forum non-stop.
I don't think it's a case of "need." It's just easier for people to talk about LGBTQ stuff in a specific forum. Making it private makes it just a little easier to stop someone from wandering by and derping it up. And not even maliciously derping it up, just the standard BF level of derp. There was a thread in the old social forum section about how BF is pretty much the most supportive and accepting forum a lot of us have been on.
Right - I don't know that it's so much a need to be insulated from the rest of the forum as it is just an added layer of comfort and security from the eyes of the general public. It's certainly going to be easier for people to talk about sensitive, potentially confidential matters if they can do so secure in the knowledge that they aren't sharing highly personal information with the Internet at large.
It's really a function of social groups being hopelessly broken, but there are privacy reasons to keep it restricted. For example the forum is not google searchable, unlike the rest of BF. Mostly,it's a way to facilitate discussion between people in a safe space. BF is an amazing place, but some threads just don't need a drive by .gif or snark, no matter how well intended it is. There are no requirements to join. Send me a pm and you're in.
Okay, "need" was probably a bad choice of words, sorry about that. And I do understand that, sadly, you might need an extra level of protection if you want to talk openly on a forum, especially since many accounts here probably can be easily linked to rl identities. Still, to give an example, last week I had a Skype discussion with a friend about the relative optical merits of Benedict Cumberbatch vs. that guy from The Vampire Diaries (I still don't understand what he sees in him, incidentally), and while I understand that there's nothing stopping similar discussions in the Entertainment forum, I guess most of them will take place at the Rainbow Connection, and I regret the lost opportunities to mingle. Let's toast, like Mandella said, to a future where this whole seperate forum shebang seems queer, not people's private lives.
Yanno, I was mostly joking but since you've corrupted me with such a foul thing! *plots to be the one to kick Elyscape, because egads what did I just watch* EDIT: Optical merits indeed. What a lovely turn of phrase and by the way, you have great taste <3
I haven't seen that guy from The Vampire Diaries but opticals directed at Mr. Cumberbatch are much more merited.
I would just like to caution you guys to use it for personal advice/venting and keep general discussion in main forum threads. There are plenty of people here who are straight, but support LGBBQ issues, and I'd hate to see the new forum become insular. Not dissimilar from the way #1reasonwhy stuff is good for raising awareness. Some of that stuff I didn't even see as a problem until it was pointed out.
As Neopythia pointed out, anyone can join and participate in the subforum, it's mostly private to prevent Google indexing and whatnot.
True, and I don't think that will happen. Functionally, we had the same thing in the original iteration of groups, but those broke, then the new ones broke, and well here we are.
