    I haven't!

First hockey game I ever went to was a Red Wings/Maple Leafs playoff game. The crowd booed O Canada. There were more fights in the stands than on the ice. The Red Wings got killed, but the atmosphere was electric.

NHLPA approves CBA. 2% voted against. 11% didn't vote at all.
  6. Athryn Despondent Fancybear

2% being 12 players, mind you.

Hey, Donald Brashear remember when Marty McSorley did this to you?

Evidently you don't. Sure he did it with a stick, but what the fuck!
  10. triggercut Hivemind Coordinator

I figured there'd be some cranks voting against. I'm more bummed that 11% couldn't be bothered to vote at all.
  11. CSL Despondent Fancybear

The 11% are too busy taking part in, or otherwise watching, the now disappointing KHL All-Star game.

GameCenter Live: Bought. Prepare for my imminent barrage of wrong and dumb opinions.
  15. Shadarr Keeper of the Elemental Materials

Apparently the local cable company, Shaw, is offering NHL Center Ice for $50 for the season. I'll wait to see whether the Oilers still suck, but that's pretty damn cheap considering the number of games, even just for one team. I pay a hell of a lot more than that for 16 games on NFL Sunday Ticket.

Doesn't include playoff coverage, though, does it?
  17. Shadarr Keeper of the Elemental Materials

Why would I need that? Most playoff games are on TV anyway.
  18. Inigima Hard Cider Gal

GameCenter is also $50 for the season. Depending on your needs it might be a better fit.
  19. Shadarr Keeper of the Elemental Materials

I have no idea what that is or if we can get it here.

GameCenter Live is the paid streaming service of the NHL. It's Center Ice except not bought through your cable company, pretty much. It is usable on your PC, or on various mobiles (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad, Android), game consoles (PS3, Xbox), and some standalone set-top boxes (Roku, Boxee, AppleTV). Like Center Ice it's only usable for non-blackout games (determined by IP address, I believe).

I haven't used it since this is my first year really paying proper attention to hockey, but I used the MLS Live app during the MLS season and I presume it's similar. It looks similar on my Roku. I'm told every game is in HD provided your broadband connection is fast enough, and people seem to like the portability.

If you go with GCL be aware that you can't link your account to your devices yet because the NHL is dysfunctional and the apps currently up are last year's. New ones due out this week (better be, since games start Saturday). Thus spake the NHL.com agent I spoke to.

Some of us don't subscribe to a high enough cable tier to get Versus (or whatever it's called these days) or MSNBC, or wherever it is they hide the playoff games in the States. And CBC only comes in in a fuzzy, standard-def format down this way.

Not much to add other than THE LOS ANGELS KINGS CAN FINALLY RAISE THE STANLEY CUP BANNER IN THE STAPLES CENTER!! WOOHOOO!!!!
  23. Shadarr Keeper of the Elemental Materials

Oh, yeah, you're in the US. For some reason I thought you were in Ottawa. Pretty much every playoff game with a Canadian team in it is televised up here, and every game from the second round on.
  24. Shadarr Keeper of the Elemental Materials

So basically everyone involved from the Maple Leafs boss on down to the IT department just sat around doing nothing for six months?
  25. Athryn Despondent Fancybear

They are here as well, just that Omniscia doesn't have basic cable or something. The main point for using something like Gamecenter or Center Ice is if you follow a non-local to you team.
  26. Inigima Hard Cider Gal

You can't seriously be surprised by that can you
  27. QuantumBit Armchair Designer

They hardly do anything when hockey is on, I don't see why a lockout would inspire them to get the lead out.

I do have basic cable, but that's not enough to get hockey here anymore. All of those channels are hiding up in the premium digital-cable packages.

I liked Gamecenter when I had it last season. It was worth it just to get HNIC in HD.

So 17,000 people showed up to watch a Montreal intra-team scrimmage. So much for sending a message to the NHL.

Yeah, Consol was packed for a similar intra-team scrimmage for the Pens. Which was also televised. Which I know, because I watched the whole damn thing.

I AM PART OF THE PROBLEM

Is Gamecenter worth it? I think it would be easier to watch on my PC or tablet than fighting for control of the tv.
  33. Inigima Hard Cider Gal

I'm not home so I can't test my Roku, but I'm told the new 360 app is out, so I assume the others are too. ALso hearing some rumors of the Android app being crash-prone on the Samsung Galaxy S3.

I'm not sure if I understand the question. And I'm new to paying attention to the NHL. But it appears to be very similar to the MLS Live service, and no one else is answering, so I guess I'll give it a shot.

    • In general: Remember that local blackouts apply. So it's only useful if you a. want to watch an out-of-market team or b. also want to watch more hockey than your local team. I think Center Ice has the same restrictions.
    • vs. Center Ice: the consensus seems to be that GCL is better if you have a good Internet connection, and is usable on many more platforms and devices. Remember that if you want to use GCL to watch on a television you need a device that supports it. There are lots of those: Roku, Boxee, PS3, 360, I think some others. If you have a supported device it's hard for me to see an upside to CI over GCL since both cover TV but GCL supports many other devices also.

Due to the shortened season I believe both are only $50 this year. I believe normally it's significantly more expensive. If you want to try it out and see if you want it for next year this is a pretty low-cost opportunity to do so.
  34. Inigima Hard Cider Gal

Confirming: GCL on Roku up and running. Cued up the last Avs game of last season to test. Allows you to pick home or away feed which is real cool, I know the MLB app lets you do that too.

So they've fixed GCL so it actually works now on Roku, but it seems... I don't know if choppy is the word. It doesn't seem like a bandwidth issue; audio is smooth, camera just seems to jerk every half second or so. It's bizarre. Anyone else having this problem?

I tried to compare on PC, but that straight up isn't working. I tried to compare on PS3, but the 2013 isn't out yet. Is this league a fucking joke? Major League Soccer managed an excellent streaming service.
