Well... http://networkedblogs.com/Fum6f I'm by no means an expert, but this article seems to indicate a larger problem than what you mention.
I really can't understand that. Not in that I don't understand the ramifications (although I don't) but that I have no idea how gender and sexuality have been conflated. How can a cisgender woman be a transgender man based on a sexual impulse when sex is separate to gender? That makes no sense whatsoever.
Did you have the same problem when DAMP was merged with ADHD, mano-depression and various other depression disorders got turned into bi-polar disorder?
My objection is not with the change in diagnostic criteria; I think the first half-dozen posts of this thread were in deliberately offensive poor taste.
If you've even seen pictures of my girlfriend, you should understand that it is impossible for me to be sad for very long when she's around. She just exudes this aura of happiness and joy around her that banishes any glumness at the existence of people like Adree. :) So no.
Thanks for posting that Astromarine. I think we did several rounds on this back in one of the "threads which shall not be named," but this has been a huge issue in the community for awhile. How this guy ended up in charge of that section is beyond me. Near as I can figure the DSM -V is being written for insurance companies so that they can more easily manage mental health care costs and deny as much coverage as possible.
Sounds like someone forgot an anniversary! (I kid, I kid!) Granted, the first picture that comes to mind is the one where she looks like she's contemplating how to commit murder with a fiddle, so there's that...
I just don't see it. Are you mad that people are making fun of internet self-diagnosers? Or is it because someone made a joke towards those same folks that implied they might turn to binge-eating or hoarding? No one in this thread has been offensive towards people who actually had been diagnosed formally with aspergers, and none of the ones who identified themselves as being formally diagnosed took offense at all, and didn't seem hesitant to reveal their diagnosis. Nor did anyone make fun of their conditions. Am I being too thick-skinned, or is Aaron being to thinly skinned? Also, my spell check wants to change aspergers to supergrass, just throwing that out there.
You don't find the use of the term "assburgers" for Aspergers offensive, I do, there isn't much need to overthink it farther.
I don't know about Aaron, but I think I recall Speak saying something about being diagnosed with Asperger's/HFA at some point - I can understand the defensiveness on that score. But I think that people here are (rightfully) directing mockery at the self-diagnosing people who fall into the "I read on the internet that these symptoms mean I have this" hypochondriac pattern and use it to try and rationalize poor social skills. Nobody (I hope) is trying to ridicule or marginalize people with Asperger's or other autism spectrum disorders. It's all cool. Let's just calm down and go count cards at Atlantic City.
I don't have much to add to what I've already said... but I do feel some sympathy for self-diagnosers, so long as they're using it as a means of self-help and self-analysis rather than as a shield and an excuse. Professional diagnosis isn't always available, affordable, or accurate.
I really can't agree with that. In any case, if all you're using your self-diagnosis for is self-analysis and self-help, what does it matter? Either the diagnosis helps you, in which case great; or it does nothing for you, in which case you wasted some time but enh. I'm not suggesting that self-diagnosers should be able to get anything from others by virtue of their self-diagnosis, but if thinking of themselves as autistic helps them help themselves, then no harm no foul.
Maybe you should report the post if you find it that offensive, instead of derailing the thread with a flame war? Additionally, this thread has kinda degenerated enough to warrant being moved to the Santorum.
Well, let's see. The thread started entirely without redeeming qualities, then sometime after my first two posts in the thread actually got interesting when it was a discussion of the DSM, insurance, &c, and then eventually Kat, Brinstil, and now you decided that bitching about my post was more post-worthy than the current discussion (which had sort of tapered off regardless). So no, I don't think I derailed the thread, much less did so with a flame war.
Entirely without redeeming qualities? It was a news post with a snarky comment about it, which is what TONS of threads here start as. Get over yourself.
I don't know which of my ex-girlfriends you are, but I promise I'll get over myself some time after you get over me, honey.
Maybe I'm being overly charitable, but I assumed the posts making fun of folks self-diagnosing weren't making fun of people who in good faith felt they had a legimate problem and needed help, but those who are just fine and maybe a little awkward but feel a need to label it so they can feel like a beautiful and unique snowflake, which is a pretty shitty way to trivialize real HFA and the people who are affected by it.
Aren't burgers made from the ass ("rump") of the animal anyway? I mean, if you're lucky. Actually it may well be that ass burgers are among the tastiest burgers.
The day that I find myself attracted to a trenchcoat-wearing creeper is the day I slit my wrists, poison myself, set myself on fire, jump out of a plane and shoot myself in midair. So I find your premise flawed.
Yes, I assumed this as well, but it is kind of shame to stigmatise all self-diagnosis just for the sake of a few special snowflakes. To reiterate - in general: if someone's main use for a self-made mental health diagnosis is to tell other people about it so they can be treated differently, as opposed to using it to understand and aid themselves, then they're probably worthy of your ridicule. But I enthusiastically support anyone who uses self diagnosis as a tool for themselves.
You're still failing to disambiguate sufficiently. That rules out about ... five? But still leaves far too many for me to bother actually guessing.
What a fun and creepy derail! I'm gonna go take about fifteen showers to try to get clean from your leering aaronness.
You may be thinking of a different Speak; I'm just stuck between anxiety disorders. Mrrrrrowr! Kids, please. Do I need to separate you two? I generally stay out of threads like this, but since Aaron brought me up to prove a point, I jumped in. Now I'm jumping the hell back out with instructions to him to please leave me out of his rants.
Well, the only people that publicize their self-diagnosis are the ones that want you to think they are snowflakes. So mock in comfort!
You're right, and I apologize; the proper thing to do is to put stalkers on ignore, not bait them for my own amusement. I shall rectify that immediately.
Disagreeing with your ridiculous viewpoints != stalking you drama queen. You claim the first several posts of the thread were offensive, then retreated to stating that the thread title was offensive since you apparently had no cogent arguments to present. If you find the term 'assburgers' offensive you must be completely new to the internet, and you must just storm around every forum just lamenting for all those persecuted "snowflakes" who diminish a genuine condition with their own unwillingness to engage socially.
"New to the internet" with almost four thousand messages on this forum? Brinstil, honey, do your research and find someone easier to troll next time, you worthless hack.
