Amaya keeps turning the king's words over and over in her mind. Then her eyes meet his, and she starts a little before she realizes his expression is much calmer than she expected.

The King: "You must be Miss Amaya Tsukino."

Amaya: "Yes..."

The King: "I'm sorry if I have startled you. It appears you have been through quite a lot because of Joshua."

Yeah, but after the spy debacle she came back because she wanted to come back.

Amaya: "Not at all. I am sorry for any trouble I have caused."



Joshua: "She has done nothing wrong."

Amaya: (Prince Joshua...)

The king looks at Josh with a kind smile.

The King: "I know that. My son is right, Miss Tsukino. You have done nothing to apologize for. The fault lies with Joshua, and with the house of Lieben."

The "fault" lies with those stupid Rules that have constricted and controlled Josh's life to the point where he doesn't know how to react to or understand these strange things called "feelings" that aren't covered by the Rules. And then he does crazy things like abducting people to make rice balls.



The King: "I would be happy to grant you anything you wish, but I must ask you to leave."

WHUT

Amaya: "What...?"

Joshua: "Your Majesty..."



The King: "I am aware of the fact that it was Joshua's selfishness that brought you here."



The King: "I don't mean to say you must be gone today or tomorrow, but I would like you to leave within the week. What do you say?"

Amaya hesitates and looks toward Josh.

Amaya: (But if I leave here... Prince Joshua will...)

Marry someone he doesn't love for the sake of the kingdom and squash the bit of humanity he's managed to gain since Amaya came into his life.

Or go completely fucking bonkers.

Maybe both.



The king narrows his eyes.

The King: "Are you not the one who forced her to come here against her will in the first place?"

Yes. Twice. But she really does want to stay now!



The King: "Either way, a new rule was made during our last meeting..."

Oh, God, more rules. Just what they need.

The King: "It is prohibited for anyone who is not a member of the royal family or a designated servant to enter the manor."



Josh and Amaya are both shocked.

The King: "You knew that you would have to say goodbye to her at some point."

His words slice through her heart.

Amaya: (What the King says is true, I'm not someone who has any right to be here... But still, I...)

Jan whispers in the king's ear.

Jan: "Your Majesty, it is almost time..."

The king nods, and smiles kindly at Amaya once more.

The King: "I wish you well."

YOU

Jan and the king leave the room.

Amaya: "Your Highness..."




Josh...

Joshua: "I'm sorry..."

He said nothing more, and the room was silent.

Amaya: (One week...)

In another part of the manor...



Man: "Yes, His Majesty was here. He..."

The man keeps speaking with a grave expression on his face.

Which we can't see.

WHO IS IT THE SUSPENSE IS KILLING ME

Man: "Yes, that's right. She has to leave within a week... Sorry? ...You want her to...?"

The man is hesitant, but nods.

Man: "Understood..."

Just then, he hears footsteps nearby and hurries to end the call.

Man: "Sorry, someone's coming. Please excuse me."


Hey. Hey. I think this guy might be the spy.

Just a hunch.



Later that night, quite late in fact, Josh visits Amaya in her room.


That's a reasonable assumption, yes.

She studies his face.

Amaya: "It's very late. Is something wrong?"



Joshua: "The King said some rude things today, but the fact that I brought you here out of selfishness is true. I am sorry."

Amaya: (Oh...)



Amaya: "You don't need to worry about that."

Amaya: (But...)

WHAT THE SHIT DAD?! Just because your son is seeing a common woman doesn't mean it's the end of the world. It's amazing that Josh isn't even worse than he could be.

I'm that we only have one more week. As much as Josh likes riceballs, that isn't appropriate in this situation.

Let's not make Josh read between the lines, he's not good at it: A.

Well, B. My headcanon is that "making riceballs" is their code name for "making out".

I don't really hate his father here. He's trying to pass the weight of tradition down to his son, and I wasn't really getting any malice off of him in that scene. He's wrong, but he's not rude or evil. He is also a product of the same environment that has Joshua acting completely unforgivably for most of his route.

It came across to me that he was maybe harsh toward Joshua, but nice toward Amaya. The fact that he keeps smiling at her, that he seems to think she's there only because Joshua forced her and that he didn't kick her out immediately, even though THE LAW must be effective from that moment on, but still gave her a week to leave.

Pops likes rules. Josh was acting weird, so clearly it is because he doesn't have a rule to follow in this situation. Incidentally, how thick is the Dres Van rulebook? What rules do you have to follow to propose or make new rules? Is there a rule to follow when one rule contradicts another rule?

I'm going as far as to think they have an entire library all with thousand+ paged books of nothing but rules. And agreeing with Angie and everyone else on Daddy. I'm just worried about the spy and Leonardo... so help me god if he comes back I'm punching him in the face.

Now that I think about it, my original post was too harsh. I didn't take into account that Josh's Father dealt with these rules as well. I was annoyed by the new rule.

I am in disagreement. Of course, the king is going to be nice to Amaya. She isn't family. I personally hate when parents are nicer to guests than they are towards their own children, especially when the guest is present. I had some arguments with my mom about this exact thing and the only reason was that 'you can't be rude to someone else's child'. I understand him being nice to her but the rude part stems from how he treats Joshua. There is a difference between discipline and dictatorship. Him adding more rules helps no one. I get the whole 'product of the same environment' thing but everyone is free to make their own decisions. The king does not have to go about following every single rule. I doubt that the citizens of Dres Van would revolt because he allowed commoners to visit the manor. I'm sure the people have had problems with a lot of the rules and would actually be in favor of letting some of the old ways go.

The new rule could very well be serving dual purposes: It ends what the King doubtless sees as a fruitless relationship that is only going to hurt Amaya (and indeed already has with the kidnapping and the accusations of her being a spy) and it also seriously narrows down the suspect pool should state secrets go missing once again.

This, so very much. I'm not particularly happy with the entire situation at all. The rules this kingdom built itself upon is really painful to witness since it restricts EVERYONE. Good intentions with occasionally near-disastrous results in terms of emotional impact.

False. As the leader of a country, he has to follow them all to set the example. To prove to his people he's doing his job and is a proper ruler. He must follow all the rules, because if he doesn't, he's above the law, and that's when people revolt.

And the people don't seem to be speaking up against old rules, so why should he change them? If it's never brought up, it won't go away.

This is a good point. A part of me also believes the king's doing this for his son, because I refuse to believe he doesn't care for Joshua, even if he went for the hands off approach in terms of parenting (which, upon retrospection, might be one of the rules as well). If he can nip this romance in the bud (too late), then he can spare Joshua needless pining for something he can't have. Not to mention he probably has Joshua's opinion on the whole "commoners" thing, so he also gets rid of pests! Win-win in the worst of ways.

Eh, the king seems nice enough, and not a bad king, just not a very good father, judging from Josh's reactions to him. And also from something Josh says in the next chapter that indicates he just sees the king as the king, not family.

This is so very depressing and is just enforcing how terribly dysfunctional the royal family must be due to the rules and method of upbringing. This is not healthy nor appropriate for effective ruling, in my opinion, but hey, I'm not royalty, and it seems to have worked well enough for them so far. Barely.
