I like the part where Joshua says that if Leonardo had fallen in love first, he would have totally kidnapped and raped his girlfriend. So, you know, no hard feelings.

Your daily dose of tsundere.

As soon as you post, I can't but think of that thread. I'm not sure whether this is going to be a problem.

I grew up in the 80's, so I can't help but compare the whole thing to a Care Bears movie. We have the grumpy protagonist (Joshua) who is saved by the Care Bears (Amaya/rice balls) and turned into a friendly, loving, insightful boy. Then the boy meets the villain's reluctant henchman (Jan) and he and the Care Bears bring the henchman over to the hero's side with the power of friendship. Then the big confrontation with the villain (Leonardo), and moving speech from the boy -> Care Bear Stare -> more moving speech and the villain has Learned the Error of His Ways and they all live happily ever after.

Yes, but the Care Bears villains were far less rapey

Then would the villain be...Pedobear?

Josh sets his mouth firmly, and lets go of Amaya's arms.

Joshua: "No... I can't make you go through any more of this..."

She gathers up her courage.

Amaya: "But Prince Joshua, I..."

He touches a finger to her lips.

Joshua: "Don't say it. There are still things I need to do...as a crown prince of this kingdom."

He winces as he says it.



Amaya: (Prince Joshua...)

She gently touches his arm.

Amaya: "I don't think so. I know you are a wonderful person, both as prince of Dres Van, and as a man."

Get me my boots, Ma; it's getting deep out here!

Josh's eyes go wide, and then his expression softens.



Amaya: "Huh?"

Joshua: "I had always thought that it was only right that people would say that to me, but this is the first time I have known someone's praise to make me feel happy inside."

His eyes, his voice... Everything about him made my heart yearn for him.

Would you two kiss already?! Hug?! Shake hands?! Something!





Amaya: "Strange?"

And then Jan comes running down the corridor with the doctor and ruins the moment.

THANKS, JAN.

He and the doctor enter Leonardo's room, and then Josh claps a hand to Amaya's shoulder, telling her she should have the doctor look at her as well, just in case.



With that, he leaves, and Amaya watches him until he is out of sight.

She returns to her old room to rest.

The next morning, Jan frantically shakes her awake. When she asks what's wrong, he turns on the TV in answer.



TV Host: "According to reports, the fire at Nerwan Estate is said to have been arson. It is possible that this could have something to do with the technology stolen from Dres Van several months ago."


Yes, I know sweetie. I kinda figured that out when you locked yourself in the basement and refused to leave.

Amaya: "What...?"

Jan: "When I went to get the pen and paper I knocked over a candle, and it hit the curtains..."

At least he didn't do it on purpose.

Amaya: (So that's what happened...)

Amaya: "The alarm did go off soon after you left the room."

Jan: "I tried to put it out at first. But as I looked into the flames, I felt as if the flames were there to punish me."

Amaya: "Jan...?"

Jan: "I wanted to die."

I'm not gonna cry. I'm not...

I'm...





Jan: "...would be to die, taking the Nerwan Estate along with me."

He looks down.



Jan: "But I knew I had to save you, and Prince Joshua, and Prince Leonardo as well... So I hurried back to the basement..."

Amaya: "Jan..."

Jan: "In the end, I gave in to His Highness's kind words..."



She yells back at him.

That's my girl.

Amaya: "Stop talking like that!!"



Amaya: "You came out of that room because you heard how hard Prince Joshua was calling for you, right? I do not know everything that has gone on between you, but..."

She gently takes Jan's hand.

Amaya: "But you do have something that is worth protecting with your life, don't you? And I'm sure that whatever it is, it's something neither you nor Prince Joshua could ever replace."

Tears are falling down both Jan and Amaya's cheeks at this point.



He looks back at the TV.

TV Host: "In the worst scenario, a full scale war may be imminent between Nerwan and Dres Van."

Amaya: (War...)

Jan: "I only just saw him heading to the courtyard with the King... There is to be an emergency press conference..."

Well, regardless of writing and stupid romance, the plot is actually really interesting.

There's a sea of reporters already in the courtyard, and the King is standing with Josh in front of them. Amaya wades through the crowd to get closer to them.

The King: "This case is still under investigation, but I would like to assure you that we were not the cause of this matter."

Reporter: "But there are also reports that Prince Leonardo has gone missing."

The King: "We are also worried about the safety of the prince, isn't that so, Joshua?"



Joshua: "Yes..."

Josh, honey? Have you bothered to tell your father anything about what happened yesterday? Even if you left out the "Jan betrayed us" part?

Reporter: "But eye witnesses have said that they saw Prince Joshua appear from within the burning building. Do you have any comment?"

The King's expression darkens instantly.

So I guess the answer to my earlier question would be "No. No he has not." *sigh*



The King: "Who said that!? Bring that witness here to me!"

The entire courtyard falls silent.

The King: "No doubt that is another one of Nerwan's tricks."

Amaya: (Doesn't the King know what happened yesterday?)

Nope. Josh still sucks at communication.

The King: "If the media continues to report Dres Van had anything to do with this matter, then we will fight these baseless accusations and hold you to account! Understood!?"

*crickets*

Amaya: (But, it can't really be said that Dres Van has nothing to do with what happened yesterday... And then Prince Leonardo is really... At this rate, things between the two countries will...)

As Amaya's thoughts are flailing around in circles, Josh looks down and their eyes meet. His eyes open wide as he spots her.

Amaya: (Prince Joshua... Are you really okay with this?)

Their eyes lock, and Amaya feels that even though there is some distance between them, she can tell how he is truly feeling. He stares at her for a moment longer, then smiles.





The reporters all seem surprised by his sudden speech.

He then proceeds to spin some truly masterful bullshit.

Joshua: "The truth is, we had a report yesterday that there would be an attempt on Prince Leonardo's life."

Naturally, Amaya and the King are both confused.

The King: "Joshua what are you...?"

He ignores his father and continues.

Joshua: "I was indeed at Nerwan Estate yesterday in regards to that issue."

Reporter: "Then where is Prince Leonardo...?"

Joshua gestures to the side.


And this is why is is (unfortunately) a good thing Joshua didn't leave him to die. Now let's just hope that Leonardo doesn't take this opportunity to throw a wrench in the works.

There's an uproar among the reporters.

The King doesn't know what the hell is going on.

The King: "Why is he here...?"

Leonardo: "Prince Joshua saved my life. The fire was caused by my own carelessness. It is no one else's responsibility but my own."

Not only is he going along with it, he's also covering for Jan.



Leonardo: "So I ask that you retract any reports that could be damaging to the people of Dres Van."

His words are loud and clear, and the entire courtyard fell silent.

Amaya: (Did Prince Leonardo realize that it was Jan who started the fire? Is that why he's saying that...?)

Who knows? Maybe he's still high on painkillers.

Or maybe they smothered the real Leonardo in his sleep and replaced him with a body double.

Leonardo: "As you all know, the kingdoms of Nerwan and Dres Van have signed a peace treaty, but underneath the surface there remains a lot of resentment."



Joshua: "There is a part of our collective where we have tried to act superior..."

Josh holds out a hand to Leonardo.



Joshua: "...we promise to work together for the betterment of both Dres Van and Nerwan, and strive for the happiness of the people in both nations."

Leonardo: "Prince Joshua..."



Leonardo: "We Nerwanese hope that the people of Dres Van...can truly accept us. Can our two nations work together as one...?"

The reporters look at one another.



Joshua: "I believe in my heart that we can rebuild the bridges between us, and so we will. If we all believe that we can work together, then it will happen."

Here and there clapping could be heard in the crowd. Little by little the clapping grew louder as more people joined in.

Within moments, the entire courtyard was filled with warm applause directed at the two princes.

Prince Leonardo looked straight at Prince Joshua.

Prince Joshua gave a decisive nod.

Their hands remained joined...


That was beautiful.

I hope they invite Amaya to the wedding.

I hope Amaya is the Maid of Honor, after all the fixing-everyone's-problems she should at least get to plan the bachelorette party!

Several hours later, the media have left and Josh, Leonardo, Jan and Amaya are all together inside the manor.



Jan speaks awkwardly.

Jan: "About that fire..."



Joshua: "Oh, so you did have something to do with that fire then...?"

Jan: "Your Highness..."

Joshua: "The timing was too perfect, so I thought you might have set the fire on purpose."



Joshua: "Yes, I know. Even if you had planned on killing yourself, you would not have devised something that would endanger other people like that..."



Prince Leonardo frowns.

Leonardo: "You are such a trusting person... Even though you now know he was a spy for Nerwan, you can still treat him like that."

Amaya: "But you protected Jan as well, Prince Leonardo."


Hah!

Leonardo: "But I did think it was Jan who set the fire..."

He drops his shoulders and laughs.

Leonardo: "But in the end I didn't quite trust him as much as Prince Joshua did."



Joshua: "Even though there was the possibility he set the fire on purpose?"

Leonardo smiles a little.

Leonardo: "Well, back at the estate... When the wall fell down on top of me... I thought for a moment that I might understand how Jan feels, even if it's just a little."

Leonardo: "I ended up confused for over twenty years. I had thought no one else would understand how I was feeling... But..."

He looks straight at Jan.

Leonardo: "I then thought that Jan must feel the same way."



Leonardo: "Prince Joshua..."

Joshua: "I felt that my own opinion didn't matter, that I was being oppressed by the rules and events of the past. I know those things are still important, but..."

??: "They aren't everything... Is that what you are trying to say?"


Uh-oh.

Joshua: "Your Majesty..."

After whispering that, Josh looks his father straight in the face.

Joshua: "Yes, that's right. I do not believe that rules and traditions are everything anymore."

The King's eyebrows twitch.

The King: "Is it the girl's influence that has brought this change in you?"

He turns his attention to Amaya, who flinches before she notices the look in his eyes is much calmer.

Is he...testing Josh?

The King: "I have done my best up until now for the Kingdom and its people. In the past I never had the intention of becoming superior to Nerwan..."

He looks to Leonardo.

The King: "But the feelings of contempt between us began to show, and at some point, I started focusing on trying to get the upper hand over Nerwan..."

Joshua: "Your Majesty."

The King: "I am not here to deny the things I have said and done, but after seeing you two out there today, and the reaction of our people, I do believe I need to take some time to think about what steps should be taken next."



Joshua: "Please do not feel you have to take it all upon yourself, Your Majesty. We shall find the road to happiness, together."

The King: "Joshua..."

The King seems to relax.

The King: "Of course. The future of the Kingdom depends on you, Joshua..."

Joshua: "Yes, Your Majesty..."



Leonardo: "Yes."

The King: "Just as Joshua said, let us all find the road to happiness, together."



Amaya: (I'm glad. Oh I am so glad...)

She can feel tears welling up in her eyes when the King suddenly turns his attention back to her.

The King: "Miss Amaya, wasn't it?"

Oh, no. He's going to kick her out again.

Amaya: "Oh, yes!"

The King: "Will you not agree to help Joshua from now on?"

WHUT

Amaya: "But... What can I do to help...?"

The King: "Joshua was able to find himself because of his meeting you. Through that we have found a way to bring our two nations together. It is all thanks to you, Miss Amaya."

Amaya: (That's going a bit too far...)

Amaya: "Thanks to me...? No, I..."

Amaya! Ssh! He's asking you to stay! Don't argue with the man, you idiot!

Leonardo cuts in.

Leonardo: "It is thanks to you, Amaya, that the Kingdom of Nerwan now has a way to move forward."

Amaya: "But that's..."

...Only because you kidnapped her, held her hostage, and then got crushed by a wall like a chump.

The King: "I cannot prohibit such an important person from entering our halls..."

He smiles softly at her.

The King: "I shall have that rule changed immediately."

Everyone smiles at the King's words.

The King: "So this is what it is to share happiness with others..."

And just as he said...

"Happiness descended and ravaged them to an inch of their lives-"

Oh wait, this isn't in the rape dungeon anymore.

THEY DESERVE EACH OTHER.

This whole story seriously makes me hate the human race and everything that's bad about being a part of otome culture.

That night, as Amaya is going to bed...

Amaya: (I'm so glad... Now everyone can be happy.)



But being able to see Prince Joshua and everyone else smiling like that had set my heart at ease.

Funny. There's only one reaction I have when I see Leonardo smiling...



The first thing I saw when I closed my eyes was Prince Joshua's face.

I of course saw his angered face...

I love how she just jumps right to picturing Josh as angry before anything else when she thinks about him.

...and his kind, gentle face... Then finally the expression on his face when he had kissed me that morning out on the mountain...

Amaya: (The King has permitted me to stay here... So I can keep close to Prince Joshua, but can I really stay here knowing the feelings that I have for him...?)

Hmm, I don't know. Sounds like it might be something YOU SHOULD TALK TO HIM ABOUT!

Her thoughts are interrupted by someone tapping on her door. She wonders if she imagined it when she hears it again, along with someone's voice.

??: "Are you awake?"

It's Joshua.

Amaya: "Oh, yes I am..."

She flies out of bed to answer the door. When she does, she notes that Josh is still in his uniform.



Amaya: "You want me to come with you?"

Joshua: "Yes. Let's go."

Although she's half-happy to see Joshua back to his high-handed self (her words, not mine), she doesn't budge.



Joshua: "What's wrong?"

Amaya: "Oh... Will it be...just us?"

What, you think he's bringing Leonardo along, too? Jan?

Josh gathers the gist of what she means.



Joshua: "Yes... Just us."

A little while later, Josh is driving them somewhere in his car. It's just like that other morning. Except he's much better dressed. And I have a feeling he asked for permission first, this time.



Amaya: (It doesn't look like we're heading to that mountain... I wonder where we are going.)

She turns back to look at Josh.



Joshua: "Yes... I was so busy after that, and it's more fitting this way."

Amaya: "Fitting?"

He doesn't respond.

Amaya: (What could it be...? Was I not meant to ask? Then how about...)

Amaya: "Where are we going?"

He laughs.



Amaya: (Of course...)

She smiles because that's the same answer she got the last time he took her for a drive in the middle of the night.



And soon enough, she does.

Amaya: "This is..."



Joshua: "Yes, let's go."


Zaaaaain, why isn't your route available in English? Whyyyyyy? *sobs*

Amaya: "What? Uh..."

She inclines her head toward Zain before running after Josh.

Josh takes Amaya out to one of the castle balconies.



Amaya: "Right here...?"

Amaya: (What could he possibly want to talk about with me here...?)

But Josh doesn't say anything and keeps staring out into the distance. There's a long period of silence before Amaya tries to speak to him.

Amaya: "Prince Joshua..."




*dies laughing*

Oh, man. Usually it's only the ditzy protag with that kind of gift for ruining moments.

Joshua: "Argh, this moment is supposed to be special and now..."

Amaya: "Special...?"



Joshua: "Oh, no... Nothing."

Amaya: (What's going on...? He's acting really strange.)

Dense protag status: Still dense.

Amaya: (But if his stomach is rumbling that loud, he must be hungry...)

She takes another look at his clothes and realizes that if he didn't have time to change, he probably didn't have time to eat all day, either.

Amaya: "Should we ask Zain to get you something to eat?"

Oh, yes. Please call the beautiful green-eyed man back here so I can stare at him some more.

He shakes his head.

Damnit.

Joshua: "No, I'm fine..."

He breaks out into a smile.


This is their own personal inside joke by now, isn't it?

Amaya: "Huh?"

Joshua: "I want you to make me some rice balls."

The sun begins to rise just as he finishes speaking.



Joshua: "Oh, finally."

He turns to face her.



Amaya: "A legend?"

Joshua: "Yes..."



Amaya: (What kind of legend...? And was he waiting for the sunrise this whole time?)

She can't help but associate sunrise with the kiss they shared on the mountain, but she can't see what that would have to do with a legend of Nobel Michel Castle.

Josh starts speaking slowly.



Joshua: "Everything in my life was either for the good of Dres Van or the Lieben family... I didn't see any value in anything beyond that."



Joshua: "Then I met you, and something changed inside of me."

Amaya: "Prince Joshua..."

Hush, let the man speak.

Joshua: "It was the first time I had ever known feelings for someone... And those feelings only grew stronger."





Joshua: "Why are you crying?"

Amaya: (Oh...)

I hadn't even noticed the tears that rolled down my cheeks.

Amaya: "I'm not sure..."



Amaya: "No... These must be...tears of joy."



Amaya: "Yes."

Joshua: "Can happiness cause tears as well?"

His eyes crinkled as he spoke.

Joshua: "I have learnt a lot from you."

And then the tear he wiped away from Amaya's cheek leaked inside his synthetic casing into his internal wiring and fried his circuitry. For Josh was indeed an AI all along...

Chapter 15 CG = Happy End confirmed.

Joshua: "If you cry, I want to be there to wipe away your tears."

His voice was soft.

Joshua: "And so you never have to cry from sadness ever again, I hope to protect you for the rest of my life."

Amaya: "Prince Joshua..."

Joshua: "I'm sure I still have a lot of things to learn, but I want to spend my life learning them with you. As well as spend it getting to know you even better."

I couldn't stop crying, and the tears blurred my vision.

Prince Joshua laughed.

Joshua: "Are those tears of joy as well?"

He continued to wipe away my tears.

Joshua: "Stay by my side. Forever."

Amaya: "A-are you...?"


Okay, I know some of you will probably get mad at him here, but it's such a Josh thing to say that I think it's funny. And kind of cute.

I stopped crying instantaneously.

Amaya: "Huh? You're only giving me one option..."

I pointed out automatically, and he laughed.

Joshua: "Of course. Because I have only one choice I can make as well..."





His lips on mine were soft, as if they were being melted in the morning sun.

He kissed me again and again, as our hearts beat as one.

And...

...just like Dres Van and Nerwan had broken free of their long history...

...we forged a strong bond with one another.



He pulled me into his arms, and I embraced him back.

Amaya: "You are all I ever wanted..."

And with that...







Jan: "Now that Princess Amaya is at her Happy Ending, you can play an extra episode continuing your story with Prince Joshua."

Another sign that this is an older game than the others: The Epilogues are part of the Happy Endings, instead of something you have to purchase separately.

Apart from that, let's hurry and hold a ceremony.
Otherwise, Prince Leonardo and the other princes will try to court you, Amaya.

Josh, you have grown as a person, and that proposal was genuinely funny.

However, the route was still frustrating to read through.

You know what I'm going to do?

I'm going to write a fanfic where Hitomi's the protagonist, that's what I'm going to do. I'm going to try and fail to salvage the genuinely awesome parts of this route and focus on the political conflict between Dres Val and Nerwan, because I'm sorry, magical happy happy solutions like that don't happen instantaneously.

Also, it's probably not going to be a romance. It'll be a friendship where Hitomi still acts as a catalyst to Joshua's character development, but focus is also given to Joshua's relationship to Jan.

Besides, Joshua/Riceball OTP, and Hitomi's ALL ABOUT AWESOME FOOD.

It's the best scenario and you know it, because Hitomi wouldn't be this level of otome protagonist dense. She'd be Hitomi. MAXIMUM HITOMI!

The gree version has a Valentines day event going on right now~ *stares longingly at Wilfred* thank goodness Joshua's birthday event is gone no thnxx

Part of me is cooing over that last scene.

The other parts of me are cheering that we're almost done with this train wreck and about to move onto the lovely Wilfred.

And then there's another part that thinks "Really? You compared your love to Dres Van and Nerwan getting back together? Are you trying to re-enforce the possible shipping?"

I don't know why but I'm completely unfulfilled by this route O_O

Let me cryyyy. My feels over that endingggg. Why am I such a sucker for cheesy endingssssssss?????

Is it just me, or does our Protag's neck look like it's at an odd angle in that last CG? Almost like Josh broke her neck with those robot hands of his. DUN DUN DUN.

See, if the protagonist was Hitomi, everything would have been awesome. Everything! And her neck wouldn't have been possible to snap because MAXIMUM HITOMI!

... That was pretty anti-climatic.

Cute, sure.
But it still was not enough to make up for the messed up shit that happened earlier.

I don't think anything could convince me to get over "Yeah, it's no problem, I woulda kidnapped and threaten to rape your girlfriend too so no hard feelings." There's ways to forgive someone in that situation, and if you are doing it before even asking the woman if she wants to forgive him you are already doing it wrong, but that is doublewrong.

Good catch Amaya! Now leave him to Jan and Leo, suit up and go castle crashing with Roberto.

Right now, I kinda hate everything in this route. Except Jan. And the other princes. Maybe. I don't know.

I just hate the romance, the way Leo was handled at the end and-- Actually, I hate the way the ending was handled, period. And the romance. Fuck, I could do without the romance since they handled that really fucking poorly.

Was I the only person that thought, 'Fuck you, Jan' when he showed up to congratulate us on our happy ending? The first thing Princess Amaya should do is hire a food taster

All things considered, I don't hate Jan too much. He thought he was doing it for the greater good and whatnot, and he had to obey. Even if at the end he regrets only betraying Joshua - like everyone else, who cares about the silly woman!

I strongly support this idea and celebrate it with italian cookies, I baked loads of it today...

You deserve all my likes and some of my amaretti too!

After Josh's proposal, they return to Dres Van manor and head toward the dining hall. Amaya's been trying to talk to him (mostly because she wants to know what that legend stuff was all about), but he hasn't said much of anything since they left Nobel Michel. As he walks down the hall in front of her, she can see that the tips of his ears have gone red.



They enter the dining hall, where Jan is waiting for them. He bows.



Amaya: "T-thank you."

Amaya: (Did Jan know that we had gone out...)

There's a distinct possibility, yes.



Jan: "Shall I bring you something to eat, Your Highness?"

Joshua: "No...Amaya."

She jumps a little at suddenly hearing her name.

Amaya: "Yes?"

Joshua: "Make me some rice balls."

THE RICE BALLS WILL NEVER DIE.

Amaya: "Right now!?"

Joshua: "Of course!"

Amaya: (Well he did seem to be hungry... And I did wonder what he was going to eat, but...)

Amaya: "We haven't even gotten changed yet..."

She gestures at what they are both wearing, which reminds me that I have no idea what Amaya is wearing. She was going to bed when Josh came to her room, but I don't know if she changed or if she's been walking around in pajamas and a dressing gown this entire time.

Josh looks down at his own clothes. And then he keeps looking down.



Amaya: (Huh? He's being pretty fair about it. He'd usually tell me to do it anyway...)

Joshua: "It's not really the most appropriate outfit for sitting down to a meal in... I'll go and change."

He whispers to himself and starts to get up, still making the puppy-eyes expression as he does so. Amaya thinks to herself that he must have been really looking forward to her rice balls and starts to feel guilty.

Amaya: "Prince Joshua... I will make you some right now."



Amaya: "Yes. I am feeling hungry myself."

He quickly sits back down.



Amaya: (Hehe... I could say those words right back at him, but I won't.)

Pfft. Wasted opportunity.

Amaya: "I'm sorry. I'll make them quickly, all right?"

As she leaves, Josh calls out that she can fill them with whatever she likes, but make sure at least one has "a little plum in it".

She goes to the kitchen, makes them, and comes back.

Joshua: "You took your time. Do you want me to die of starvation?"


He's such a little kid sometimes.

Amaya sits with him, and they start to eat the rice balls with some tea Jan had prepared for them. (I hope Josh made him drink some of it himself before he served it to them.)

Josh looks over at the rice ball Amaya is holding.



Amaya: "This...? Um...pickled radish leaves."

Sounds...interesting.


I've had radish leaves in salads so...yes? Never had them pickled though.

Amaya: (Oh... I guess he's never had them before...)

Amaya: "It's really good. Did you want to try some?"

Amaya: (I did make a few the same...)



Joshua: "Just a bite."
