The dude responsible for the Open Source Boob Project now gets published on sites like Jezebel occasionally. For writing about women in what at least some women think is not a wholly obnoxious and sexist manner.

I don't agree with them, but apparently some folks think he's learned.

Well, they're kind of wrong, judging from his blog. Plus Gawker Media isn't exactly the greatest source of great editing decisions.

Oh fuck, Ferrett. Back when I occasionally wrote for a Magic: The Gathering website (shut up, nerds), he was one of their featured writers. And he is pretty much the archetype for everything that is wrong with the internet. The guy is an absolute choad who caters to like-minded choads with zero self-esteem or self-respect. The kind of basement-dwelling nerd that validates all the stereotypes. If anyone needs to be staked and left out in the desert for the good of the masses, he's at the top of the list. An absolute waste of my good breathing oxygen.

Yeah, the piece they published was a long, rambling diatribe about how guys wouldn't like it if pretty women approached them every day in Starbucks and tried to convert them to Christianity so that's why women don't like it when guys approach them in Starbucks looking for sex.

It was a thing. That happened.

I read Jezebel mostly for the entertainment news and recaps of shows I don't watch, sometimes the product reviews. I don't consider it a feminist site by any means. I do get some car-wreck entertainment out of it, though.

I'd love to get recommendations for other general women's interest type blogs that I could follow instead. There's a couple of actually feminist blogs I follow but they don't update often enough to keep up with my insatiable appetite for more content.

I have a friend who used to follow all the Gawker sites for the sole purpose of annoying himself and getting riled up. And that's not even me sarcastically commenting on him reading them. He fully admitted that he read them just to get angry at really bad "journalism."

I prefer The Hairpin myself, which is less a feminist blog and more a general interest women's blog. In many ways it reminds me of Jezebel when it first started, before it went off the deep end like every other Gawker property.

Yeah, fuck Kotaku. Want to know why?

I was part of the team that launched Dark Age of Camelot. About a year ago, it had its tenth anniversary and its producer at the time, Matt Firor, wrote a very nice retrospective that I posted on my blog. It included the story I often tell of how I ruined DAOC's "perfect launch" (in comparison, it really was!) with a last-minute database error and promptly had to be peeled off the ceiling.

    http://www.brokentoys.org/2011/10/09/a-decade-of-camelot/

It got some attention, and Kotaku's editor wrote me and asked if they could republish it. I said sure, although I thought it was kind of odd that they didn't just link to it, like, you know, every other site on the Internet does when pointing out interesting content, and didn't think much more of it.

Kotaku's headline? "How A Classic MMO Survived A Disastrous Launch"

Yeah. No shit. As you can see from the URL,

    http://kotaku.com/5848650/happy-10th-birthday-dark-age-of-camelot

...that wasn't the original headline. Some Gawker editor decided to sex it up after it was first drafted in their content management tool. Making it look like DAOC had somehow managed to survived, you know, my utter incompetence.

    My email to Kotaku:

I've just seen the story as reprinted on Kotaku, and I have to admit to two problems with it.

The first, and lesser, is that I am credited with no longer being in the gaming industry. This actually isn't the case. For the past 2 years I've been at NCsoft.

The second, and greater, is the headline that you chose for the story, "How A Classic MMO Survived A Disastrous Launch". This is, to put not too fine a point on it, misleading, or to use the technical term, "bullshit". I fully admit to being biased being part of the launch team, but DAoC is consistently cited for having one of the most successful launches in MMO history. To quote a contemporary review (Gamespot, http://www.gamespot.com/pc/rpg/dark...6/dark-age-of-camelot-impressions?sid=2817406), "..the fact that the game launched smoothly, in stark contrast to other high-profile massively multiplayer games released this year, suggests that players already immersed in Dark Age of Camelot may well stay that way for a very long time."

To describe it as disastrous bespeaks either a complete unfamiliarity with the subject matter of MMOs, or a desire to sex up a story for page hits. Given that your publishing story still reads what was probably the originally submitted title, "Happy 10th Birthday, Dark Age of Camelot", I suspect the latter is the case.

I do not appreciate being personally credited with "a disastrous launch" and, though I certainly cannot stop Kotaku from printing whatever they care to, in the future I would ask that you simply link to my work instead of republishing it verbatim, as what little content you have added does not do it any favors.

    Regards,
    Scott Jennings.

    The response I recieved:

    Scott,

I'm really sorry you have problems with the way we republished the story, and I apologize for not getting back to you sooner. We only ever republish pieces that we admire and it's never our intent to misrepresent the original story or mislead readers.

As to your first point, I mentioned that Matt Firor's in the industry because you asked us not to say what he's specifically doing, and I wanted to provide context for him. The context for you is more apparent--saying that you're a veteran, with a link to Broken Toys, where they can learn more--but I apologize if it reads like you're not in the industry. We can add another paragraph in your own words to clarify.

The headline focuses on a specific part of the piece--the server crash--but I don't think the headline by itself paints DAOC as unsuccessful in any way. I think the fact that the majority of the commenters responded to the piece as a fond remembrance to a great game testifies to that.

But, I really am sorry that you wound up being unhappy with the republishing. I hope that you can believe that all we wanted to do was bring a great piece of writing to our readers.

    Respectfully,
    Evan Narcisse

You will of course not be surprised at all to note that nothing ever changed in the story, though the attribution changed... to link to my book, while still implying that I was no longer in the game industry.

    So, yeah, fuck Kotaku.

You used a freaking semi-colon and you're worried your English sucks? You are the most adorable thing this side of my avatar.

As for your actual content, don't worry if you're posting a point you think someone else could make better. Think of it more like you planting the seed of a point, and if someone who might not have thought to make the point in the first place can expand on it, then forum teamwork wins again! I suspect you explain your points just fine, though. Buck up!

Yeah, Double X has a really mixed track record but as part of the Slate phone app, for instance, it's got good things from time to time without the more bullshitty stuff taking over (kind of like the rest of the app). Many of the good things on it are not really feminist except in a very broad sense, as in "happen to be written by or about women and that was where they got published for a variety of reasons having to do with the systemic biases in mainstream sites".

I think the "we kick you in the balls to show you we like you" and the "we will mock you mercilessly for failing to write in prose worthy of publication" tendencies have been deliberately exaggerated for effect. The long memory hasn't.

The worst that will happen if you post with grammatical mistakes or the occasional emoticon is that people may not bother to pay attention to your stuff, or if they disagree with you, they may use the errors as part of their response. I'm not sure what would happen if someone routinely posted in netspeak since it doesn't seem to occur.

By they way if you haven't tried visiting the "January and Everything After" sections, check it out, if only for the long-running "Post your Pet" and "Cooking" threads. Posting a picture of your pet is a guaranteed way to boost your likes :D

Generally agree. The grammar thing can really get out of hand if you double down on the error or flaunt your disregard of it as appropriate for "just" the internet, though. Usually in awesome ways, but I'm sure they are uncomfortable for the recipients.

The long memory thing is also a feature, in my view, because it provides context in addition to the grudge fodder that's already been mentioned. It's really difficult to say how much bullshit that sort of long view on a post history heads off. One of the more mixed things that happened in the exodus was that many regulars changed their names (as did many Known Internet Idiots, but I digress). While I'm sure some people just wanted a fresh start or preferred a different nick, it's already happened to me on a number of occasions that a conversation would have been significantly different in good ways (either from giving more of a benefit of the doubt or just not bothering, for instance) with that additional context from the outset.

As many of us age, there's a lot of mellowing out and maturing that dulls the edge of the grudge aspect. But yeah, it's definitely still there.

What MrsWidget said is really true. By far, the majority of the old Qt3 grognards are genuinely nice people. Well, fairly nice. Dan's epic post on page 1 is a hilarious primer in the cultural differences between our two BF communities, but on an individual level, those of you who came here for the pigeons and the yaoi will likely find that in one-on-one interaction, they're not going to be huge assholes to you or anything. There are a handful who enjoy snarky internet personas, but they're just that, personas.

And this is a group that self-polices pretty effectively (albeit with unintended results at times) so despite all the comments about the hivemind, we rarely actually think in unison and will not dogpile you just because you're different. We're all different.

Nah. Stand on your own. You're the best! Arrrrround! No one's gonna ever keep ya down!
