    Re: Grammar/spelling/usage

I spend all day obsessing over that stuff at work and I don't have the cares left to worry too much about it when I'm chatting with people on the intrnet in my spare time. Plus I post mainly from phone so some typos are going to get through. People make too big a deal about these things online IMO: this is an informal enough context that people shouldn't be too picky.

yeah well with some posters not giving enough of a shit to read over your posts is a good warning sign and so it acquires unfortunate connotations but well what can you do both the grammar nazis and the nazid are equally bad

I think you mixed concepts from three different sports there (which you may have intended), but nonetheless, you hit a home run.

I don't polish my posts the way I would a professional document. I'm also not a brilliant writer, although I enjoy it and am usually able to express myself relatively clearly, but I do have a tendency to do run-on sentences (and both overuse of punctuation -- especially parentheticals and dashes -- and underuse of punctuation particularly toward the end of sentences

Edit: I also tend to re-read and edit multiple times, then feel embarrassed that I needed to do multiple edits. It's often for content though. I should probably let my posts sit for a while and re-read them before posting.

Edit: Plus, if I post on my iPhone, I'm sloppy as hell. Sorry guys!

I don't like people who overanalyze linguistic phrases and idioms.

Why call butterflies "butter-flies"? Why does inflammable mean flammable? Have you ever seen anyone put gloves in their glove compartment or a pair of pants that was actually two pieces? What does kicking a bucket have to do with dying? When you put up with something, what are you putting and why up? Is it similar to the thing that you put out when you either put out (meaning offer sex) or are put out (meaning you're upset / inconvenienced)? Why does one vanish into thin and not thick air?

    Language is just weird.

Did anyone else immediately think of Seinfeld? I think I may have read a few non existent, "What's the deal with"'s in that paragraph as well.

    Wow that thread was ugly.

Personally I love reading about the evolution of language and the origins of phrases. But I know a lot of people don't give a shit about etymology :)

I have never understood how that even works. To me, using caps meant 'emphasis', not yelling; especially considering I'm READING, and not LISTENING in any way, shape, or form. Unless there's a premise that indicated shouting, of course; context, if you will.

Then again, I don't consider a Forum a place where people would ever shout at each other at any point anyway, so it's probably just me.

EVEN WITH CRUISE CONTROL, YOU STILL GOTTA STEER!

One word in caps is EMPHASIS.

A WHOLE SENTENCE IN CAPS IS YELLING.

'Course, I just abuse italics for emphasis.

Caps can go either way. If it's just ONE word in a phrase, it's emphasis (I use it when I am too lazy to use italics or whatever). IF IT IS A WHOLE SENTENCE THEN FUCK YES I AM YELLING.

    EDIT: GODDAMMIT THORO

Nope; not doing it for me. It just either makes you look stupid, or you're making some sort of attempt to insult my intelligence... which would still make you look stupid.

When I read forums, I consider it more like a conversation and compose my posts in such a way to reflect how I am likely to speak the same stuff. Minus most of the annoying verbal tics I am sure I have. Although sometimes. I'll like. Do those too.

    Considering your avatar....

I'd rather not do that, personally; I've the habit of both speaking quietly and far too quickly.

It's just a changing net culture thing (maybe it's generational?). All caps = yelling to me too. However, I do chat reference sometimes at work, and I can testify that it does not mean yelling to everyone. And the people who think it does, generally don't use it. So I now when I see all caps, unless it's clear from context that the poster is angry or excited, I ignore the all caps.

But my avatar was composed of half a female character and half a male character, neither are voiced, and have opposite personalities.

    So I'm curious.

Fuck, the shoulder pads. I think I hated those most of all. And I had hair that never, ever, ever allowed hairspray to tell it what to do for more than an hour at best. I was a tragic figure in middle school. :( And NJ was kinda slow to let the 80's go, hair-wise, so I guess technically even though I went to high school during the 90's, I was a tragic figure then, too.

Basically any time there is even a hint that the 80's might come back fashion-wise, I cry big sloppy tears on the inside, because surely we realize what a mistake that decade was.

  39. I loathe shoulder pads with a burning passion. My shoulders are incredibly broad and kind of hunch upwards (and no, my shoulders aren't tense, it's just the way my bones are structured), so putting shoulder pads on me (like my MOM did for me when I was a broad-shouldered twelve-year-old for a SCHOOL performance in front of the entire SCHOOL) makes me look like I have camel humps growing out of my neck. Ugh.

By the way, just read through the entire thread and can I just say that I love this community so much? Every single other gaming community I know would react to the LP subforum with "BURN IT WITH FIRE KILL IT KILL IT KILL IT BAN ALL OF THE CREEPY ANIMU FANGIRLS", so the very fact that there's a thread where both sangry grognards and weaboo LPers can have mostly civil discussions about how to co-exist in a productive, mature manner just amazes me.
