Just for that cartoon I heard the theme tune of. It's driving me nuts. The theme tune is brilliant and it sent shivers down my spine hearing it, but I remember very little about the actual cartoon except it was amazingly good.

Actually I'm more of a kids' TV theme tune fangirl. I'll often have a browser with ten youtube tabs open of shows' theme tunes. Current favs are Spartakus and the Sun Beneath the Sea, and Defenders of the Earth. Dr. Snuggles is probably my all time fav.

Holy fucking shit, I just read all 15 pages of this in one sitting. My eyes are burning.

I have to say though, it's been.. Productive. More so than I would have thought early on. I like the new subforum. I like organization, and increasingly specific areas for certain content is always a good thing for me. I don't understand why filing the VNs and date sims in their own subforum would be a bad idea or refused. I'm a member of that community, and again, sorting is helpful IMO. I'd use it.

Also, people complaining they can't find what they're looking for anywhere... You know there's a search box, right? I've lost track of threads I was interested in, ESPECIALLY in the LP forum. So I select to watch them at my first interest and looked through my watched thread to find them. Otherwise, I put the game/thread title in the search box! So if you're looking for specific games, you can not only find a specific thread, but other mentions of this thing you're looking for content on! Though I'm probably missing some part of things if no one's using that already. Maybe getting TOO MANY results, I suppose. But even then, look up the author and their started threads in profile. It doesn't seem that hard to find what you're looking for, if you're willing to put the extra three minutes into doing so. And if not, was it that important to you?

Again, I'm all in favor of more organization to begin with. I'm only saying if that's not an option for the reasons already pointed out, there are alternatives so nobody's just shit out of luck. I have a few years behind me of sorting through giant, teenager shitstorms of clusterfucked and rampant forums. I'm used to having to track down something if I have an interest.

But back to the point, reading the come-together over the subject here, I also feel like I know some of the people outside the LP forum a little better, and would like to know them more. It's also let me get an idea for who I should probably avoid for my own comfort. I haven't been on BF long, and the LP forum had the most things I was immidiately interested in, and people I felt like I was on the same ground with. But I do have tons of outside interests, and have been poking around outside the LP to see what others are talking about. That's how I found this thread actually, sniffing around Drama Llama out of sheer curiousity. And I have a ot of mixed feelings over what I've learned. There was a point early on where I thought maybe I wasn't welcome on the forum at all, as a minority and openly-mocked joke to the rest of the community. But the way the thread has mellowed out and both sides are getting to know each other, I really think we can all get along.

Talking out issues is always healthy. I wouldn't have realized any mistakes I had made or how to prepare myself for other areas or threads if I had gone somewhere and been mocked or trolled. I'd just feel unwanted. So I'm glad we could say, 'this is what I expect out of people,' or, 'this is what I didn't like, or would discourage.' When you actually communicate, you can grow into something better. And better ourselves is a good thing for any person, regardless of intersts, habitat, flaws or strengths.

Speaking of flaws, I apologize for any typos or things in this long ass post that don't make sense. I should have been in bed 2 hours ago, and my keyboard also seems to be acting up. I'm trying to nip typos and nonesense, but I always miss something.

Keep in mind that the grognards are now outnumbered by the weaboos. It's not so much an enlightened act of tolerance and inclusion as it is a survival tactic. ;)

I don't discover threads this way and I wager many others don't either. The search box is great for finding that one funny post you remember and want to quote. But for finding current discussions, most people rely on the What's New page, their watch list, or the front page of a certain forum.

I really never have understood this. This has never been a useful feature on any forum ever, as far as I'm concerned. Even on tightly focused forums there's too much chaff.

Now that you can exclude whole subforums, though, I find it pretty useful here. Go here and mark the appropriate checkboxes to exclude updates from the subforums you'd like to ignore: http://brokenforum.com/index.php?account/whats-new

Likewise, the problem with using the Watch Thread feature is that you can't watch a thread until you've seen and read it the first time. That's one of the reasons the multiplayer games needed to be broken out of the LP forum - you can only recruit new players into a game if your thread has a good chance of being seen by people who did not previously know it existed.

Oh, and "grognard" and "weeaboo" aren't exclusive categories, either. I'm actually a strategy/RPG gamer transplant from Quarter to Three, but I've also always played imported Japanese games on the side to practice my language skills. It turns out visual novels are excellent language practice, since they're nothing but huge reams of text, much of it voiced (easy to check pronunciation). It's just that up until recently, I've kept that particular hobby under my hat, and only talked about playing Diablo III, Dwarf Fortress, or XCOM.

When I cross the streams, I gain an unusual superpower: I can play Shogun 2: Total War and actually understand what the Japanese unit barks are saying during combat.

That's really cool. Random thing: I've been playing Sleeping Dogs, which is set in Hong Kong and in which almost all of the characters are Asian. Though they obviously speak English most of the time, there's lots of Cantonese phrases sprinkled in, and the game has a nice subtitle option that translates those phrases during cinematics. But there's a LOT of ambient dialog and peripheral chatter that is in Cantonese that doesn't get subtitled, and I often find myself wishing I understood more of it.
  23. MrsWidget Keeper of the Elemental Materials

I'm playing a Dragon faction character in Secret World. Dragon's home base is in Seoul. NPCs at the home base frequently (although not exclusively) speak Korean with subtitles, and occasional background chatter is also in Korean. Whenever I gain a faction level with the Dragons I get a congratulatory phone call in Korean. I wish I knew what she was saying! (From context, it's obviously something along the lines of "Good work, you're rising in the ranks." But still.)

Like I said, just offering a suggestion. You may not use it now, but it doen't mean you couldn't. Any place that has as much activity as the LP forum is just not going to have a first page tailored to your interests when you look at it. You can't expect it to. And again, I'm not opposed to subcatagory sorting, but Lum implied that imploded last time, so I'd like to be productive and offer ways around it for the time that it's still clusterfucked. I mean, I'm a member of that area, and I only look at like, 1% of the content myself. I'm quite used to filtering through stuff. But fine-tuning one's ability to find their interests is always preferable.

Even if something's on the front page, there's no gurantee someone who might enjoy it will see or click it and get involved. There's no sigs anymore, so in this case, I'd reccomend bringing your thread to the people if you want activity that much. Poke around other threads that are to your interest, notice people who might like your thread, throw a link around. Most effective way I can think of to get people you'd want to you is to find them and offer a polite, 'Hey, look at this.' Advertising without spamming is the best way I can think of to get traffic.

Or not. As I've mentioned, just attempting to offer solutions to problems that can't necessarily be coded away by Lum. I mean all this in helpfulness and hope everybody can find something that works for them to enjoy. That's the goal here, right? For everyone to be able to have a good time with people who share their interests? : )

Obviously your best solution is to disappear for two months and then come back and ask a friend what the best threads to read are. Because there is judgement you can trust. Rapunzel has great taste btw.

Half kidding of course. I will probably end up looking into as many threads as I can and compiling a short synopsis for what can be found in there before making a decision. But it's not a bad idea to look to the people for which your tastes are tailored alongside for some sort of help.
