I think it was very poor Fusco. John hasn't really been a friend to him--in fact he puts him down at every opportunity. I think it was pretty key that both HR and John used the same "who's got your back" line and it made Fusco grimace each time cause he thinks they'd both leave him to hang.

I'd like to say to Alicia Witt, god damn. You need to get more work. You have aged SPECTACULARLY, and you're not bad at your job. Why aren't you in more things? And as cutesy as it is to have Ben's actual wife play his imagination not-wife-because-I'm-too-noble-to-put-her-in-danger-like-that-or-maybe-I'm-ashamed-of-my-limp-or-something, I have to admit, this show really knows how to do credit to its actresses, because her whole style here is just about enough to make you forget how haphazardly True Blood can get with her. Well, the show is mostly good about that. Carter's new haircut is a little....weird. Out of place. Like half of Pippi Longstocking or something. It's not aesthetically unpleasant, but it makes her look a little too cute for her entire character history.

On the other hand, I do wish that these shows would cut it out with the fucking draw poker. You know what you'll never see in the World Series of Poker? Draw. And you know why? Because it's boring, not just to watch, but also to play. There's no useful information that you can use to base your play on. I'm afraid that I'd get bored stiff sitting around playing that all night, even with Zoe (especially with Zoe ba-dum-tish). And how is it that one of the things that Harold packs for their move in is a full set of 11.5g poker chips? If I'm him, that's probably not something that I'd include, and even if I did, I wouldn't cheap out on 11.5s with the metal inserts. You've got, like, infinity dollars, dude. Get some pure clay. They're the only ones that sound and feel right.

I do have one significant problem with the plot, though. If you're going to rob a rich dude's safe, wouldn't it make more sense, assuming from the outset that you're going to go in with a bunch of guns and do a stickup, to jump him on an average night when he's alone? Because, unlike any of those drooling teenagers, he WILL know the combination, and then you don't need a safe cracker. And what kind of serious gem trader has a safe you can pick with a stethoscope? There are too many crime shows on these days that involve this sort of thing to just assume that as a given.

The whole point of doing the robbery during the party (at least, from what I figured) was to screw over Lloyd. Make sure his face was seen so that he couldn't go back to his regular life if, for some reason, they didn't end up killing him after all. That's why they didn't give him a mask.

I liked how they played with your expectations with Lionel in this episode, particularly at the end. Just when things were finally starting to look up for him, the Law of Narrative Causality takes over and he takes two to the chest. And then, just when you think Reese has arrived to save Carter, nope! Fusco's the hero today. Well played, show.

Fusco having big old balls is awesome.

Unfortunately, I'm pretty sure that these writers don't know how you make profit on dirty mortgages. Spoiler alert - the people who make the money aren't the ones that actually foreclose on the houses. That's generally a losing proposition. You make money selling mortgages that you damn well know that people can't repay by bundling them with other stuff into a vehicle that appears to be profitable on its face but is not, in fact, going to be solvent. The target in this scheme is the investor (they're the ones who you're taking the money from) - the terrible human cost is a side effect. That's one of the things about it that make it so very distasteful. You would have to be leveraging some sort of governmental incentive for veteran's housing for the foreclosing bank to make any sort of profit off of the deal, much less split it with anybody else to the tune of millions of dollars.

Also, Jessica Collins has a serious problem. She has the same name as a much more famous soap opera actress and was apparently manufactured at the same facility as Jordana Spiro. I wonder how much of a challenge it's going to be for her to establish an identity.

Edit: And did CBS get some kind of bulk deal from the Rolling Stones? Two shows ending with classic tracks on the same night?

HOW DID THAT EPISODE END? Our feed cut out like two minutes to the end.
  9. Brian Seiler Worked The System

Reese got arrested. So did all the other people in suits that were chasing him. Carter declined to identify him as the dude, so all of them got sent to jail so that the FBI could try and work out which of the guys is the guy that they want. Presumably the first episode after the break will have to do with him getting sprung.

  10. Supper's Ready Hivemind Coordinator

They're going to have to spring all the men in the suits, otherwise they'd just be telling the FBI yep, it's that guy.

I have a feeling though that none of them will actually make it as far as jail.

I do have to wonder about an episode featuring almost no Cajesus, though. I mean, he is a movie guy, after all, so maybe figuring out a way for him to get a few episodes off every year might be in everybody's interest.

Do like Doctor Who does. Every season have an episode that focuses on Fusco or Carter. Or just some random guy telling stories about the times he saw the Man in the Suit. And then at the end of the episode his girlfriend turns out to be a slab of concrete and we see them make out.

A like isn't enough for this post. It is hilarious how things go without Reese to hold the fort down!

So what's going to happen now that Reese's girlfriend has him? What's she want, anyway? The last we saw of them, she put a bullet in his chest. Is she contrite? Feeling pissed off at the government that obviously used and abused them both? Antagonist, potential ally, or maybe a mix of the two?
    RyanMM and Elyscape like this.
  28. Quackers Magister Mundi Elyscape

Mix of both. I figure she's gone totally rogue and is off the rails on revenge against the government. She'll want him to work with her cause they tried to fuck them both and when he doesn't? Boom.

On the one hand, I have to say that I'm really glad this wasn't the season finale. On the other hand, I can't even imagine what they're gonna do for it.

Wait, I have an idea. Stanton never got rid of the laptop, which turns out to have a good chunk of the source code of the Machine, and she's figured out what she has. And then she meets Root. Cut to black.

Is there any indication that John's ex (what's her name btw? I'm so bad with names) knows about the machine? As far as I can tell she's been playing her own game thus far.

Also: seriously this is the best show on TV right now.

Yes and no. They've been careful to only show her in surveillance videos in flashbacks, where she has a white box. However, she did have that laptop that ostensibly was full of stuff on the Machine, so maybe. Then again, John has a yellow box in flashbacks dating to at least 2009, so either he knew about the Machine way early or it retroactively gives people yellow boxes everywhere. The former doesn't seem too likely, so her lack of a yellow box would seem to indicate that she doesn't know about the Machine.

    SO MAYBE
  32. Brian Seiler Worked The System

Final arc of the season should be the old partner coming back. I believe that she was connected on the payroll with that one bald agent guy that told John to cancel her. Possibly the same scene that confirmed that she was still alive earlier this season.

This is one of the better "There's a Completely Different Episode Going Over Here"s I've ever seen. Fusco's story was clearly an eighties action movie. A terrific eighties action movie. And one I wouldn't mind seeing myself. And my favorite bit? The music for the John Getting Out of Jail scene that was clearly intended to be sort of eighties flavored. I got that, anyway. That was just spectacular. It's kind of a shame that this show has little hope of ever actually winning an award (it's not the best show on television objectively, and I doubt that it will beat out Mad Men at any point in the near future with awards voters, and that's ignoring the premium cable stuff), but I console myself with the fact that all of those other shows put together would have a hard time adding up to this one's viewership.

Fusco going all duel-wield was probably the most awesome moment of the show. And he's not even either of the two main actors! Also, great display of what happens when Reese isn't around -- shit gets real, son. Honestly, can this show get any better? Not sure, but I think so.

The Fusco stuff was fucking brilliant.

One of my favorite episodes of House was a latter-season episode focusing on some of the side characters. House and his entourage made only the occasional (wacky and somewhat deranged) appearance, and it was quite effective.

That said: I guess shit is getting real with Reese's ex! She's obviously not here to kill him; I'm guessing her angle is some kind of "let's get back at the government that screwed us" thing. I guess the big Q is whether or not she goes out for good before the season is over, or if they keep her around as a possible future asset/antagonist/both?

  35. Quackers Magister Mundi Elyscape

Well. So much for her being a recurring character!

    A couple of things though:

Wasn't Mark Snow officially looking for the man in the suit once? So. Why were they like "That guy fits the suit description!"

Were we aware that Mark Snow knew about The Machine? Cause the red corners of that square at the end makes me think he did. Also: way to be a fucking badass, Snow! That was awesome!
