Maybe I'm being kneejerk but if you make a cartoon scoffing at gay marriage you should be shot into the fucking sun.

So this cartoon has now come under criticism as being anti-semitic:
    http://www.thejc.com/news/uk-news/101023/scarfe-regrets-timing-sunday-times-netanyahu-cartoon
Murdoch has apologized, the cartoonist has regretted the timing.

Am I the only one who finds the comparison to blood libel ridiculous? On the one hand, we have the total myth that Jewish rituals used the blood of (Christian) babies, and on the other we have the real human suffering that the wall and Israeli military action causes. I mean, I can understand numerous criticisms, but this seems to concoct the anti-semitism charge out of nothing.
I realise the visual style is a bit old-fashioned which can make people vaguely recall anti-semitic propaganda of the past, but that seems like a weak charge.
  3. Matthew Schempp This Is SEWIOUS

I think it's the blood as motar that does it for me. Jews using blood for other purposes is at least a veiled reference to the original blood libel.

I think it's probably unintentional but it's definitely uncomfortable. The thing is, the same exact cartoon could be made about any number of places and situations, and if the guy building the wall didn't happen to be Jewish the meaning would be clear, so I don't think it's intended as a blood libel thing. However, fair or not it's easy to predict that "Jewish figure using blood for a nefarious purpose" is going to be read that way by some people and spark some kind of controversy, so if your intent is to get a point across that kind of thing is best avoided.

Oh man I saw a crazy jellyfish exhibit at the Monterey Bay Aquarium a few months ago. It was awesome. Also they were playing funk music because they decided that jellyfish were the funkiest of sea creatures I guess, and I don't know why but it worked.

As far as I can tell, neither of those statements are true in general. Firearm ownership rates being scarcely more precise than a wild guess, the most recent data I could find had the ATF and CIA estimating pretty equal rates of ownership for handguns and rifles. As for regulations for rifles versus handguns, that's obviously going to vary from state to state, but based on my rough knowledge, handguns are much more tightly regulated than rifles. Here in NC, I could drive to the gun store and buy a rifle today, assuming I pass the background check. For a handgun, I have to go to the county sheriff's office during their ridiculously inconvenient hours, fill out a background check form, and then go back two weeks later during those same stupid hours and pick up the permit that allows me to purchase a handgun. I am completely unaware of any situation in which purchasing a rifle is more difficult than a handgun. I guess you could factor in regulations on automatic rifles (there are also pistols) and short-barreled rifles, but these are extreme outliers.

But I could be totally wrong and/or misinterpreted what you meant.

    I'm sick. Have pity.
In short I meant "more rare in crime" with rifle regulations going toward preventing their use in crime (barrel length, licencing, etc) but you're right, the rules vary too much from state to state to make any type of blanket statement. Withdrawn.

Just to set things straight, you can see Big Diomede island from Little Diolmede island in Alaska. In the 80's the Soviet Union did actually fly Tupelov bombers over Alaskan airspace. But those non-geographical data points were obsolete by a decade when she took office. The Soviet Union no longer existed and the Diomedes are a international date line anomaly. She's still stupid, but facts are facts.

Ah. I've no idea how we got here but, in that case:
People aren't mocking the idea of seeing Russia from Alaska, but the idea that that somehow gives one insight or knowledge

T-shirt man is a hippy Liberal (note the pony tail and sock/sandals) his shirt is mocking the religious people that get upset when you question their god, he is furious at the newspaper that is questioning his god: science.

That most recent graph is however using 1997 as starting point, not 1998.

"Ending the data then [2010] means it is possible to show a slight warming trend since 1997, but 2011 and the first eight months of 2012 were much cooler, and thus this trend is erased."

I wouldn't be too keen to take the Daily Mail at face value.

And a nice in-depth piece by Tamino on the "15 years of no warming".

Tamino's a good read; it's fun watching a statistician pull his hair out when people who have no clue what they're doing produce "facts" from data they have no idea how to read.

No, they really were :) That particular bit of 'research' is still majorly obvious cherry-picking, it's just that they take into account the previous (still pretty hot!) year in order to make it seem like they've covered the 1998 counter point. It's just more obfuscation.

The troop number on the geezer says 1950, as in the year. I think it is a poorly stated cartoon about how the BSA is stuck in the past. The "Are we prepared for this??!" probably means that they are too stuck in their old ways to change with society to be more inclusive. I don't see any coded messages about homosexuality being wrong, so yeah, probably pro-inclusion.

E: "Are we prepared??!" is also a joke on the BSA motto, "Be Prepared," which I thought was obvious (I'm an Eagle Scout weeeeeee!) but on second thought there are probably a lot of people unfamiliar with this.
