Which one do I include the cartoonist in? I'm not about to fly off half cocked at his correct use of a word with no other attempt to make it a gender insult. The first cartoon? Have at it, sure.

This may also be another example of the differences across the pond; over here the usage really isn't considered to be feminine.

I was going to try and explain the difference between the different definitions at one point, but JasonT is right. It doesn't matter anymore because they have become too intertwined.

On a side note, are there any terms for cowardice more biting than "coward" or "yellow" (I don't know if I wanna look up the ety on that) that aren't also used to question one's cis-hetero-maleness?

There's a clear semantic divide between "pussy" (insulted man) and "pussy" (slang for vagina,) but that doesn't mean the usages are unrelated or free of toxic enough gender baggage to keep the insult from being off limits. Calling a man a bitch is different than calling a woman a bitch, but the "male insult" still carries a implication of effeminacy and thereby a gender political payload.

My tl;dr is that etymology notwithstanding, "pussy" is firmly on my linguistic no-fly zone even when I'm furiously pissed and want to insult the hell out of someone who would really be insulted by that word. Its two most common usages are too inextricable. When I saw that cartoon I thought, well, he did probably accomplish his mission of maximum poo-flinging-in-NRA-hardman-eye, but unfortunately ruined it with the word choice.

Not more biting, no. I'd say the actual word coward plus a bunch of intensifying adjectives and adjunct swearing is about the best one can do. "Wimp" isn't gender/effeminacy related but it doesn't sting either, any more than old-timey cowardice-related language does.

I suspect it's partially a cultural divide, as over here, the word cunt is rarely ever heard, and is one right up there with 'the most offensive things that can be said', while the word pussy is almost always meant to represent the anatomy over the cat.

I don't think we're going to see an end to the use of slurs on a man's masculinity as being an effective insult any time soon.
  11. extarbags Already Beat BF's New Expansion

There are other ones (chicken), but I don't know that I'd call any of them "biting." I think insulting someone's bravery doesn't really have the sting that it used to.

As one of the most liberal people I know I resent Stephanie Mcmillan for making me a little more Republican every time i read her stupid fucking poorly drawn and sophomorically written comics.
  31. JoshV Keeper of the Elemental Materials

What offended you about that comic? Not saying I thought it was brilliant, but it didn't make me any more republican.
    Elyscape likes this.
  32. peterb Armchair Designer

Actually it wasn't that comic specifically but it reminded me of her "Minimum Security" comic from which extended excerpts have been posted in this thread. As to this comic, it takes a special sort of ability to write badly to make a CARTOON which makes the reader say "Gosh, the dialogue in this cartoon is too cartoonish even for cartoons."

I like to imagine that somewhere there is a fairly conservative Republican who hears Todd Akin talking about how women can't get pregnant from rape who puts his head in his hands and says "No, no, no, stop saying stupid things while sharing my politics, because you're getting your stupid all over me and embarrassing me." That's how I feel about McMillan's cartoons.

    ...oh...

It's just so fucking smug. Like Rall or Ramirez or the McCoys. Nothing subtle or nuanced, no metaphors or imagery just "HEY THESE GUYS ARE BAAAAD". It's a basic rule for good storytelling: even the bad guy doesn't think he's the bad guy. But not in McMillan's world, all the bad guys are MWAHAHAHA bad.

Likely none. According to Ye Olde OED, "pussy" is used to describe a woman as early as 1557ish, although in this case it is in an affectionate manner by comparing her traits to an affectionate cat. The vulgar use to refer to women's genitals shows up as early as 1699 (although this gets a little weird because OED cites the same quotation as the earliest use of the word to refer to a cat (As Fleet as my Feet Could convey me I sped; To Iohnny who many Times Pussey had fed)), with the next source cited arriving from 1790, and it's definitely vulgar (Thro' Susan's Holland smock or spare Or on her pussie for to stare). If we consider just "puss" as a vulgar term for female genitals, we get 1664 as an earlier and definitely more convincing usage (Æneas, here's a Health to thee, To Pusse and to good Company; And he that will not do, as I do, Proclaimes himself no friend to Dido). Use in place of "cowardly" isn't cited until 1842 (I walked up very carelessly among the soldiers..and concluded they could never fight with us. They appeared to me to be too pussy). So we've got nearly 300 years between "pussy" referring to a woman and referring to a coward, and a solid 175 years between referring to her genitals and usage as coward. Obviously these aren't first usages and simply first recorded usage as known by the editors of the OED, so do with that what you will.
