The Al Jazeera cartoons really annoy me. Here's a news source that typically has more informative coverage of world events than all of the US networks combined, has won a number of awards, and had (has, rather--they're still live-blogging about Syria every day) absolutely the best, most in-depth coverage of the Arab Spring. Hell, they had some of the best coverage of Occupy Wall Street. Just compare the front page of Al Jazeera English and CNN any day of the week, for crying out loud. Sure, there is fair criticism to be leveled at Al Jazeera re: editorial independence from the Qatar government. That's fine, and those questions should be asked. But that's not what these assholes are doing. No, they're just being big old racists. And boo hoo hoo, Israel doesn't like them because they insist on reporting on things in Gaza.

Yep, a college friend of mine moved from BBC to Al Jazeera because they gave him more leeway as a journalist (e.g. able to make a documentary on a Nigerian soldier who fought in the Burma campaign)

As is, not a terrible cartoon. Without the labels it would be much better. But I suppose he needed them for all the people in the world who have never heard and understood the phrase "drawing a line in the sand".

And CO already has a decent regulatory framework in place that was developed for medical pot.

You know, I think Bennett is kind of overrated. He benefits from the fact that the bar for political cartoons is incredibly low and he's not a complete right-wing nutjob like most of them, but he does use labels a lot and when he doesn't his point is sometimes muddled. But this one is exactly the kind of awesome cartoon that he sometimes puts out that earns him his reputation for being one of the (very few) good ones, and I can't be mad at the guy who comes up with this.

We hear a lot in the media and from politicians about banning assault rifles, but in actuality they're used in relatively few murders; handguns are by far the bigger problem. A good cartoon.

I think he's making a fair point. How exactly is a state supposed to regulate a substance that is still illegal at a federal level? The law gives adults over 21 (I think) the right to grow up to 6 plants each. Does that extend to people from out of state? What about people who live close to schools? They also need to think about the consequences of people trafficking to neighbouring states.

This is not going to be an insignificant time sink for the legislature.

I support legalisation and actually used to be neighbours with one of the heads of the movement in CO, but my first thoughts upon the passing where along these lines. CO (and WA) have an important role as they will be the role model for other states who pass similar laws.

Sure, but the point is it is going to take a ton of time for the legislature to deal with. Are you familiar with government? His point is still valid. This is a much larger scale than medical.

Given that the road is going past a school and nothing else, I think his point is that the government doesn't want to legalize it because PROTECT THE CHILDREN, not "hey, how does this even work if the Feds still hate it?"

It's going to be a rough road, but the reasoning for the comic seems entirely silly.
