I don't agree with his message and he seems to be buying into ridiculous caricatures of what a second term for Obama means. However, based on his last two (unmodified) comics, I wouldn't call him a hack at all. He seems like a good cartoonist just inside the conservative bubble (ie, Fox News, etc).

Well, he has a hacky message, IE anything the Right Wing Blogosphere has glommed onto today repeatedly, over and over. Without regard for facts. So, in that manner, he's very much a hack. His last cartoon's message is "The guy elected by the people ushers in the death of America" aaah ahh ahh*hack hack*.

The most recent ones (the hands of Uncle Sam and the half mast flag) I actually thought elegantly conveyed their point, even if I disagreed with it.

But I stand corrected by his body of work.

Despite getting the joke, it still took me two times seeing this to realize that that's supposed to be Rosa Parks. It looks like Che.

biden made a big deal about the decision by obama to do the raid, calling it one of the gutsiest. the risky, non-guaranteed of success, unauthorized raid in a friendly foreign country decision. the decision obama said he would make back in the debates with mccain, the one mccain said he would not do.

this guy is saying anyone would have done the same because it was totally obvious that it would succeed and they were sure osama was actually there (and not 70% sure as reported) and the political fallout and chance of a failure costing re-election would not be a factor at all in anybody's mind. after all, no democratic president had ever suffered at the hands of a botched military raid.

That was also the day we learned that Joe Biden was a hammerhead shark.

Really? The guy who turns in a generic and probably reused picture of a flag at half mast with the oh-so-clever caption "Mourning in America," a pun that would amuse no one, is "not a hack at all?" And that's leaving out Otterloop's roundup of Ramirez's greatest hits.

Is your intent to argue about that specific comic or to just get your punches in?

Killing Osama was an easy call and anyone would have made it so no one should credit Obama with having done it except that he shouldn't have made it and it was a bad call and Obama shouldn't have done it and now he's upset people in the mideast.

I can't explain why he's hanging out with Castro, Kim Jong Un et at al.

But at least he's not a hack at drawing - all four foreign leaders are instantly recognizeable without labels and from a slightly unusual angle. Well done.

Obama is only recognizable, because he's standing on The Presidents Seal, which is one bigass label. And of course the point he making is really obscure and from a very unusual angle... but I'll give, that Ramirez can draw. That flag was also good - he should consider doing Hallmark cards instead.

It's probably a reference to Obama's willingness to talk to foreign leaders. There was that ridiculous criticism of unconditional talks that went around on the right awhile ago.

Not really. Castro and Il are easy caricatures, and Ahmadinejad looks like fat Abraham Lincoln. Chavez looks like Paul Bunyan. It doesn't help that all of them are obese when none of them are in real life. You can only suss out all four of them because you recognize two and your brain fills in the blank based on your knowledge of who every right-wing dope considers to be the worlds' supervillains.

Nope, I disagree.
I hate everything Ramirez is saying, and his bigeared Obama is crap, but on Chavez he actually gets the face and nose quite right, and while he's not obese, he is a big boned man. Castro and Il are easy, I'll give you that. But Ahmadinejad is also spot on and there was no guessing involved. I think he's quite good at drawing when he sets his mind to it - in the bunch Otterloop posted above, some has great details (like the chopper) while others seems like fast hack jobs - this is one of his better.
But why argue about this, when we can all agree that his message, his humour and his use of symbolism sucks?

It's a good comic, but it would be better without the "Hispanics" and "Anti-Immigrant Rhetoric" labels.

I'm beginning to love Day by Day. Those women in evening dresses drinking wine and making non sequiturs - it's like the guy drawing and the guy writing aren't on speaking terms. Nothing they say make any sense and there's nothing as base as an actual punchline. Dadaist commentary at its finest.

The "No Amnesty" sign is fine. That passes muster as an actual sign rather than simply a label.
