For what it's worth, while smoking did give you back BioMana, it also took away some health, so it wasn't a straight-up potion.

Yeah I don't think you start radio contact with the guy until after. And kerzain: lol. Rage a little harder? If you didn't want that as a response. maybe your initial post shouldn't have implied that you judged the game as not worth your time based on the opening cutscene. Obviously I was wrong in my assumption after subsequent posts from you. Thanks for calling me a cunt though, you cranky old man.

Yo, QuantumBit, spoilers baby, spoilers! Just change the word and the people who have finished still know what you mean without spoiling it for those who haven't.

For the past few nights I've been thinking about a demo of a game I played in 1998, Gazillionaire I think it was. I'm trying to remember more about it and I might take a stab at programming something similar for my learn-to-program project.

Oh, well even "the ending" wasn't as interesting as I hoped it would be. But I guess after hearing people talk about it for 5 years, there was no way it wouldn't be a letdown.

I just played my first team based game with voice chat enabled (Planeside 2 in this case). I joined a pick up squad and somehow ended up in a group of kids who have mastered the fine art of hurling eyewateringly offensive racial, sexual and other quality insults at eachother (and anybody else within listening distance). I mean, I've read these things in Youtube comments and the like, but I never expected to hear people actually verbalize this stuff.

I haven't laughed so hard in a long time (at them not with them). No wonder it's taken me this long to even attempt voice chat, when text communication has (up to this point) always worked so well for me in past games. Every guild in GW2 seems to be pushing for heavy voice chat usage in their guild requirements too, and now the very idea seems rather off-putting to me.

It's one thing when a person's anger and frustration bleeds through their mic (I can only imagine the humiliation of being bitched out by some 11 year old guild officer after a wipe or something), or to be forced to hear horrible music or shitty mic quality/clipping, but it's another when they're doing their best to vent some preternatural rage of the ages.

Of the maybe dozen guilds I've played with on voice chat in various MMOs, 90% of them were mature, reasonable people, and none of them had officers or leadership under 18, and every decent guild had good voicecomms discipline; no music, no bitching/raging after wipes, if you have serious problems take it to an officer in private after the raid, etc.

Playing with random Planetsiders is more like playing HoN with voice on than it is playing GW2.

I have a hard time working up enthusiasm for modern games that still have players killing rats (or spiders) at level 1. Their inclusion is so commonplace I can't help but think the dev team is either painting by numbers (which, typically, doesn't say good things about what the rest of the game may hold in store) or they're trolling the playerbase.

Is there any particular reason why Crytek would make a TimeSplitters game? I didn't think they made the originals, did they?

That Xbox TimeSplitters was an awesome game, though. Would love to see another one, but I don't know what the connection is here.

    It's time...to SPLIT!

TS 2 and 3 were both absolutely fantastic games and they deserve a real sequel, but I'll gladly take an HD remake of the first 3. That being said, as BRubin said, Free Radical was bought by Crytek who has stated plainly multiple times that they don't think there's enough of a following to warrant a sequel/remake.

I know that the petition probably won't convince them, but a man can hope.

Good to know. I will gladly pitch in if they run a Kickstarter. I don't think an Internet petition has ever accomplished anything, ever, though.

Half-Life 2: Episode 1 is really boring. Here's some Combine - use your super gravity gun. Here's some more. And some more. Here's some stupid puzzles. Now here's some zombies. Shoot them until you run out of ammo, then shine a flashlight on them until Alyx kills them for you. And Alyx cringing from the stalkers was just embarrassing. And it doesn't like alt-tab at all. This game is supposed to be really short, but I doubt I'll be finishing it.

I guess this is why I haven't played a single-player FPS since, uh, Half Life 2.

Where does one even start? I haven't found myself interested in even playing an FPS in quite a while, and so where does one begin when they'd like to play a modern one? (I guess Borderlands 2 qualifies, but it's quest and loot system don't make me think of it as an FPS I guess).

Playing an FPS or Third-Person Shooter with a dual analog controller still makes me hate life. I'm forever intolerant of the idea so I never ever play console-exclusive shooters if I can help it. The last one I played was Mercenaries for PS2. I still liked it, but that was only because I avoided having to shoot at all costs. Opting for a stealth approach - sneak into the base, get into the perfect position, then carpet bomb the living hell out of it.

Metal Gear Solid was one of the most painful and terrible games I ever played through to completion and I regret every booting it. No one has ever made a good case for it being otherwise but I'm still eager to know why people love it so damn much.

Today's random gaming thought/proclamation -- I will not buy another game for full box price on day one. I feel like I've gotten burned way too much on that lately, with Assassin's Creed 3 being the last example I'll put up with. Sales happen way too often, and too soon, for me to bother picking up a game on day one again. Wait two months for a 40% sale and get it then. I'll probably get a better game then anyway, with patches and post-launch support.

Only thing I'll lose is collector's edition swag, but there I'm only in it for the art books, and I imagine those can be had on ebay if I'm that desperate.

It's not really being jaded, though! I still think games are pretty freaking awesome. But games are more awesome at $30 than they are at $60. That's math.

Yeah fine it's the best I could come up with on short notice okay? GOSH.

But I know them feels brah. I rarely rarely ever buy a game on release day and I never preorder anymore. I steadily maintain that preorders are a sucker's game. No matter how great the franchise or how reputable the developer, you can get burned way too easy. Same with season passes - the whole idea of paying for something you haven't seen (or doesn't exist yet!) makes no sense to me. I have friends that preorder a year in advance and get CEs and all that nonsense and I'm not even tryin to hear that. I usually wait until after release and see how reviews and impressions look before I buy. At that point I might pay full price if it's something awesome and I really can't wait, but there's something to be said for staying about a year behind the release curve.
