So my girlfriend was asking me about the marijuana legalization in Colorado (we're going there in March to visit some people....just coincidence, I swear!). She asked "Do you think that people who are in jail for possession will be allowed to smoke marijuana now, like prisoners do cigarettes? Wouldn't that be weird??"

I had to agree. That would be really ironic! I have no idea how this law works at present, but it would certainly be funny (and sad, obviously) to have people who were busted for simple possession getting high IN prison...legally!

The Methodist church I grew up attending always did it with infants. Idk.

Dad was just never really into the religion stuff; my mom went to Catholic school and came from a good Catholic upbringing, up until the day her dad got really mad at something the Pope said about...Iran-Contra? I think?...and abruptly dropped the church thing like a hot coal. The kids turned out kinda funny for it, really. I willingly went to Mass in Russia just to see what it was like (oddly enough, it was an Irish mass); my sister can barely sit through Christmas service without muttering snarky comments under her breath. Religion is weird, yo.

I was baptized as an infant in the Swedish Church, formerly the Swedish State Church. My parents were never religious but they later told me it seemed like the thing you did with newborn kids. My baptism is the only religious service I've ever attended come to think of it, unless you count weddings.

Well, it was confusing to me, as you put "Protestant" like it was some sort of designation akin to "Mormon" or "Methodist." Protestant is the umbrella term for any church that isn't Catholic last time I knew, which is why I was confused.

When that sort of legalization of an act occurs, I think that generally all prisoners serving time for that act are released. I could be wrong, though.
  6. Athryn Despondent Fancybear

I don't know about people currently imprisoned, but the WA state AG started throwing out current cases ahead of the legalization, saying that he doubted any jury would convict.

The church in Norway is primarily Lutheran. I was baptised as an infant and went through confirmation at 15ish, not out of any kind of religious feeling but because that's what you did(and because confirmation inevitably meant big money presents from family), and then at 18 I decided bugger this for a lark and officially left the church. Completely undramatically. Told the parents at dinner. "Hey, I signed myself out of the church today." -"Okay. Pass the salt."

Probably not. Alcohol and most other drugs aren't allowed in prison (cigarettes are the exception). I don't think they can even self-administer prescriptions due to the potential for abuse.

I believe you are wrong. Legalization doesn't mean it wasn't still a crime when they did it. It's a unique situation and not one for which I can think of an obvious parallel*, but I doubt we could expect that sort of decision. No politician wants to be the one who says 'we're going to go ahead and let a few million prisoners go', even though getting these non-violent offenders out of prisons would probably be the best thing.

*In America. Though they have offered official apologies, in 2011 the house of commons in England turned down a request to posthumously pardon Alan Turing for 'gross indecency'. Their justification was that he was properly tried for his crime and when he committed his act, even if it is legal today, he knew that at the time it was not and that he was committing a criminal offense.

Right, I was just trying to shorthand it to avoid having to actually list which of the Protestant churches participate in the full dunk vs christening. My knowledge of it is based on personal experience, which means I know the Episcopalians do christenings and the Baptists do immersion. Beyond that, I'll gladly admit I don't know. Partly because I don't care, and partly because there are a few too many Protestant belief systems for me to bother learning their particular ins and outs.

RE: Church stories - I actually kind of enjoyed church (not religion, just church) when I was a kid. Was raised casual United Methodist, and we had a great pastor with an awesome singing voice who was really cool to us little kids. It was some point in high school where I just decided all this stuff didn't make much sense for literal belief but made for nice stories or helpful fables.

Up to that point, I'd been involved in choir, our church theatre, the youth group, and participated in services as an acolyte and (later) as a crucifer.

I also touched my first boobies while dating a girl I met in church choir, and gave up my V-card to a (different) girl from youth group. See? Chuch isn't all bad.

I can easily beat that: I once nailed a highschool girlfriend in a confessional. One of the rare moments in my life where, had I been caught, I would have been expelled AND excommunicated at the same time.

Well yeah - you are / were Catholic, right?. It goes without saying that Catholics have a distinct advantage (if you want to call it that) when it comes to sexual relations happening in church.

I like churches, actually - I love the air of solemnity they give off. And so many of them are architectural marvels.

Our church had tons of those too. And a basketball court, a theatre, a bowling alley, a library, a huge kitchen and dining hall, a fellowship hall, various living quarters and other rooms for meetings and such, and of course the sanctuary where services were held. It was a huge sprawling place, and great fun to run around in as a kid.

My synagogue growing up had a huge number of those, too.
  32. Warren I Pretty Much Live Here

My Dad was a "searcher" for spiritual succor, and as a result I went to a wide variety of cathedrals/churches/temples/halls/etc in my youth. And even a synagogue or three ( I played competitively on the church basketball team of one synagogue - haha! That was wild*)

Anyway, I must say, they all had a fair share of crooks and nannies, small privates, room too.

    <shameface for stupid post I couldn't stop myself from>

For what it's worth, Prairie Public Television ran a series a few years ago entitled Prairie Churches, looking at the art, architecture, and history of the churches dotting the plains of Manitoba, Minnesota, North Dakota, and Saskatchewan. It was actually quite interesting, but maybe I'm biased, as my grandfather was a minister in some of those very environments.
