Sounds more like a sad thing to me.

This discussion is making me jones for a HoHo despite not having any for years. I'll eat one* on your behalf.

The beef fat is basically the same thing as lard, which is a classic baking ingredient that was only replaced by shortening because it was believed that shortening was healthier (it's not). The "petroleum product" is not a preservative, it's thiamine mononitrate, also known as Vitamin B1, which is a synthetic vitamin that is present in all enriched flour. If you eat things made from flour, you are likely already eating this. Several other synthetic vitamins are also derived from petroleum, so if this bothers you, watch out for anything that is fortified. Also fresh fruit, and anything that contains paraffin (which includes a lot of grocery items). Paraffin is also a petroleum product. It's worth remembering that petroleum is actually organic matter. It's not like you are eating rocks or something*.

The full Twinkie ingredient list is here, and honestly, there's nothing particularly offensive on there, aside from the relatively high levels of saturated fat and hydrogenated oil. If you aren't eating Twinkies on a daily basis, though, it's not like they are going to kill you.

    Edit: Whoops, forgot link.
Edit 2: Lard in baking. Also known as the "miracle fat" by pastry makers. Note that lard is a little healthier than shortening made from beef fat, in that it has more unsaturated fat and less saturated fat. They are pretty similar, though, overall.

*(You do need to eat some rocks, though, if you want to remain alive).

I was figuring I'd just knock out some* Drake's instead. You know, Ring Dings, Yodels, Devil Dogs.

You know who owns Drake's now?

I'm weeping the tears of regret into the pillow of remorse.

Dolly Madison, not Little Debbie. I wouldn't eat Little Debbie on a bet, though.

WHERE WAS THE DOJ WHEN ALL OF THIS SNACK CAKE CONSOLIDATION WAS GOING ON??? HORIZONTAL INTEGRATION! ANTI COMPETITIVE! BAD FOR CONSUMERS!

Although if it's anti-competitive, it makes it even odder that they can't make a profit. Oh well.

I still have this crazy love for Little Debbie brownies, though. they were my favorites when I was a kid. I can't ever buy them because I eat the whole box in a day.

Because the current CEO and the bakers' union* are both steaming piles of shit. And because everyone in the world is like "oooh Twinkies I love those!" but never buys them.

*before the shield maidens jump in to blindly defend the labor union, let me say that even the Teamsters Union is well-documented as saying "yeah fuck those guys".

Popped out to Superstore on my lunch break and picked up a pack of twinkies and one of cupcakes. Thought about getting more but I don't really want to go overboard, I'd just be sad if they go away forever and I didn't give them a last hurrah.

I do find it amusing that the "twinkies last forever" myth persists even in the face of their imminent demise. They're baked goods with lots of fat in them. Their shelf life is much shorter than a lot of people seem to think.

I logged in today to find this guy giving Elyscape a run for his money. I mean, Elyscape and many other people had contributed their fair share too, but yowzerz. To be fair, I think the guy is really looking forward to SimCity 5:

We have Christmas FM here. A radio station that starts up in December and broadcasts nothing but Christmas songs. My sister insists on putting it on, she claims to annoy people but I'm betting everyone secretly likes it.

You people are crazy. I love Christmas music and listen to it any time of year. I've got all eight of triggercut's mixes plus a handful of two-CD sets (various things: this one jazz, that one piano and harp, the other crooners) and I could put that shit on forever playlist and be good to go.

As a Vandy fan, it feels good to finally be truly proud of my team. I've supported them through thin and thinner. This year, they look on course for 8 wins, which is fantastic. They beat the hell out of Tennessee, our arch rivals (who don't actually see US as rivals). It was a good night!

Speaking of consoles, someone mentioned the Prince of Persia remake on XBLA recently and I got the urge to play it again.

My parents have headed off on holiday, so I'm going to be having a dinner party. HUZZAH! Now I just need to check with my brother if it's ok with him, my sister already said she'd be fine with it.

I don't know what to do for the menu, one fried suggested we do a pot luck style thing but that could be hassle with them getting everything to my house, they'd all have to bring the food in taxis and if they bring pots they might not work on our induction hob. As for food I'm a bit stuck. I promised I'd make some people mussels years ago, but two of the people probably coming don't like mussels (or any seafood.) I could do the sweet potato and chorizo soup again. For a main course I don't know, maybe the Belgian beer stew I made a few weeks ago, with spuds and carrots. Two of the people probably coming bake so they'd probably be happy to make a cake.

Biggest plans though is I should have my HTPC arrived by then. I'll have it set up on the telly in the kitchen. A stream of kitten cam going, emulators with Mario Kart going. Eee! So fun!
