My mother is coming over at noon. Trying to figure out whether I present as "stuck in bed and too weak to carry on a conversation," or "up and about and strong enough to argue."

If only. I gave my tacit consent to this visit last night, so refusing it today would be significantly ruder than even I'm willing to try being. (I don't do well with being rude.)
Interesting idea, but not workable, as I have one of the world's worst poker faces. :)

Her mom violently disapproves of narcotic pain meds, so that's probably not the right tack to take. :)

Yesterday, my mom told me something that is kinda true maybe.
She said that I am a nice person and a loving person and a trusting person. And that all of these things are what make it so difficult for me to function happily in the world. Because the rest of the world is kinda sorta mean and selfish and I should start being selfish too?

But I don't understand that. I don't understand how being selfish could be a good thing.
    Jemjewel and Warren like this.
  21. AaronSofaer Magister Mundi Elyscape

It's not*. The correct answer to the iterated or continuous Prisoner's Dilemma isn't to always be a dick; it's actually "tit for tat with forgiveness". Be decent to other human beings, and if they're dicks to you, act to minimize the amount of damage they can do and find better people to hang out with; but always be prepared to reevaluate your conclusions about someone's nature if there is evidence that they have fundamentally changed.

*This poster assumes that your mother's "selfish" is actually the proper English "douchebag". The amount of selfishness required to prioritize one's needs over those of others when doing so does not incur a significant negative impact to the other, or when the other would prefer the prioritization of one's needs, is of course necessary in society regardless of the selfishness or lack thereof of others; otherwise, it's all "No you decide", "No you decide", until it's too late to go get dinner anyway and you have to scrounge.

"You decide" versus "No, YOU decide" is totally not due to selflessness for me. It's due to laziness. <3

I agree with Aaron's assessment. I strive myself to take the approach of not being a doormat, or to feel like a slave to the world around me. We have the power to say no. We have the responsibility to be assertive. We have the capacity to offer kindness to others, to both those we know and to complete strangers. But that kindness must be tempered with acknowledging your own needs also, and nurturing those.

If you are unhappy, recognise that, then do something that makes you happy. To me, that is what being selfish is, in a good light. It doesn't have to come at the cost of who you are. Our actions are much stronger than our thoughts.

Always a coward and running away, mwahahahahaha~! And eh, computer connection to the interwebs was being all wonky.

Didn't really sleep today actually. I tried but past few days have been spent being badgered by family and due to Nerf Wars my legs are now pretty banged up arghles feel so useless. Here i will sit for the rest of days, to while away the time on the internet. And hopefully write.

I don't want to risk the ire of BF by posting a duplicate thread, so... do we already have a thread about dropping cable TV and using a set-top box like AppleTV or Roku?

I'm starting german classes again today. For the 4th time. yeah, I know *shame on me*. :) but on the contrary of the other times, this time I have a pretty good incentive not to give up (due to too much work and other excuses). I need to be fluent in German to be able to continue with my adoption process. So, there's no giving up this time. *go me* :D \O/
