How did I adjust to a three-hour timezone shift so quickly? It's like I have a circadian rhythm or something, which is not what the rest of my life has been like. WEIRD.

I can navigate, I can still see enough to press out where like and it's not, it's not what you think because i honestly have not been sleeping. Early in the morning was too much like drawing on scores of strength, the awareness of watching the dark and the soreness of my feet settling like teeth because you had to arrange just so, just with the right kind of note to hold it all together. And now is a result of that but i will be fine, motor skills unimpaired and i'm liable to just sit here, thoughts spooling away

I always adjust to NJ really quickly and I do not know why. Perhaps I have a finely honed sense of guilt that gets me up at 9am (which is late in my family) when I am in the presence of my parents.

i think we would be too much of heart, of fleetness and slippers that spark in the laughing wind. And drumming would greet us, but we too full of thunder would drowse, and like the lessening veils, fall off into the deepness long before they made well home.

  17. Hobocaust This Is SEWIOUS

I know that assuming one thing doesn't rationally make sense at least based on a single piece of data, but my brain keeps rolling it around in my head over and over and over again making me feel sick and anxious.

How do I kill just the drama portion of my brain? Can I self lobotomize?
  18. MrsWidget Keeper of the Elemental Materials

Now that I'm on appropriate meds it actually works to tell myself "you know, you don't have to keep thinking about that." Boy was I happy when I figured that out.

Short of that, um. Do something to keep your mind occupied? Reading fiction works for me sometimes. Maybe a movie. It's not lobotimzation, but sort of short-term distraction isn't always a bad thing.

Hope the cycle stops soon. Take care of yourself!
  19. Gnu Elitist Negative Nancy

I am the worst person to give any advice about this, and although I used to be on meds my current solution is the poorest ideal of self-medicating in which I smoke ridiculous amounts of pot. I'm always happy to serve as a bad example!

I can tell you that I was always resistant to the "keep yourself occupied" advice that everyone inevitably gives. How does that make everything okay, you unsympathetic bastard? And it is also the best advice in the world. Sometimes you just have to accept that our wiring is prone to these obsessive thoughts and feelings. Distraction is the only thing that makes it better for a while, and trying is better than the alternative. And sometimes it takes a while to find both the motivation and the thing that will do the trick. Sometimes you have to trick yourself past the immunity from distraction that comes when those cyclic thoughts creep back in spite of whatever you try. Just keep trying.

Okay, I'm ready for some sort of new Star Trek television series to be introduced.

I like the idea of a new series on the surface, but I'm not sure I'd actually be enthusiastic. I enjoyed the pseudo-reboot film well enough for what it was, but it was as a separate entity than what I've had so much affection for all these years, and I probably won't even see the next film. But I'm a curmudgeon who doesn't really like going to the movies or watching TV anyway, so that doesn't say much.

Is there an oral part and is it in Schwyzerdütsch? Because in that case, Swiss are even bigger dicks than I thought they were.
  23. Astromarine Elitist Negative Nancy

yes there is, but no it isn't. IIRC, they give you the colloquial basics, like greeting and such, so that you don't come off as stiff in casual conversation, but the class itself is in Hoch Deutsch I believe.
  24. Aurora Armchair Designer

There is an oral part yes, but they can do it in Hochdeutsch. The thing is that they need to interview me and Astromarine separately (to be able to start the adoption process eventually. it depends on the results of the interview). And they "refuse" to do it in any other language than the one of the Kanton where we live, which is German in this case. We would be fine with French as we both speak it feasibly well, and French being one of the official languages of the country ... well, we were disappointed. But what we hear back is that they're protecting the well being of the children. And possible parents that are not fluent in the local language are a strong "no-no" in their view because they are not integrated in the community.

well, I can't say that I totally disagree with the part of having to know the local language. Being fluent in the local language is of course a necessity when you have children ( at least around here). Most of the school teachers, for example, will only talk to you in Schwyzerdütsch. you need to ask them to speak to you in Hochdeutsch. And the funny part is that some actually won't do it.

that said, I must say that it's quite frustrating being unable to even start an adoption process. they can take years, so, ok we start the classes, but they could also accept that until the time they eventually find a child we would be more fluent in the language. And when you add to that the fact that we actually know one of the official languages of the country + english + all our friend are swiss nationals -> meaning, we're not that much isolated.. well, it sucks.

but we don't have an option. our own country is lousy in helping nationals living abroad with adoption processes. :(

  25. Aurora Armchair Designer

hmm, I thought you were asking about the adoption process and not the classes. opsy :) classes are in Hochdeutsch. The teachers will translate to the language that most of the students understand. In my class that's english. But they'll do it also in other languages. They do have classes to learn Schwyzerdütsch. but you need to be fluent in Hochdeutsch first.

I'm sure you've all seen them. The People Who For Some Inexplicable Reason Think They're Supposed To Capitalize Every Word In A Sentence All Of The Time. I try not to be too much of an English Nazi while ignoring my own fallibility with the language, but good God, it fills me with an inordinate amount of rage and pity and confusion. There are a lot of common misspellings and grammar mistakes that make perfect sense to me; I can whine all I want about education and effort and pride, but not everyone is gonna be adept -- or even mediocre -- at the written word. But does anyone have the slightest idea what in the blue fuck would possess someone to think that's a thing they're supposed to be doing?

The Thing you should understand is that German (and, in Fact, older Versions of English) capitalizes the first Letter of every Noun.

I (very) briefly studied German, I'm aware. If it didn't seem to solely be a phenomenon of native American English speakers, I wouldn't flinch. Worse, it seems to frequently rear its head in the posts of people in my Facebook feed, making me question my choice of family and acquaintances.
