Where the hell does cider even fall under PA laws? I can live with being inconvenienced for beer, but not Woodchuck. It's a staple beverage in our household.

Crazy and weird. I like my grocery stores having an alcohol section as large as the produce section.

I think it's classified with beer. If I recall correctly. Which I might not.

Fuck, looks like I need to move back to Cali, where the BevMo run free in the fields of FREEDOM and PROSPERITY and BOOZE.

It took me a while to get used to as well, but at least in VA it's only hard liquor that you have to go somewhere special for.

Next time I stop by Meijer on the way home, I'll take a few pictures of the vast beer / wine / liquor sections so you be envious and/or begin planning your move to Michigan. (Just bring plenty of Rad-X!)

I feel obligated to point out that in Missouri you can buy everything from PBR to import microbrews to grain alcohol right in the supermarket with no blue laws restricting when they can/can't sell alcohol.

I've been to a Meijer. And I think the way it's spelled in regards to how it's pronounced is stupid. TAKE THAT, MICHIGAN.

Also I liked that in Missouri you could buy booze at Wal-Mart. The Wally we lived near in Cali was pretty neutered, so it didn't have anything close to a grocery/booze section. We didn't mind making the (relatively farther) drive to BevMo though, if we wanted something the grocery store didn't have.

I think it's against Missouri state codes for a Wal-Mart NOT to sell booze.

I don't drink alcohol terribly often, but it's still annoying to deal with the weird shit laws surrounding it in Texas. It's been nearly 80 years, people. Get it together and just make it widely available. People are going to get drunk whether or not they have to buy after noon on a Sunday in a specific nearby county.

Was all pumped to super-do mah hurr today. Took deep breaths, did a nice walkthrough of what will happen (it never changes, but it's just a thing I gotta do for reasons), got everything ready...

....then learned that my mother took the new hair straightener and shoved it away somewhere where I can't find it.

and now i'm back at the computer feeling very disappointed.

The fun part is that it varies not only by county, but also by city.

Which leads to situations like my visiting a friend in another city, swinging through the grocery store to grab a few things, and then standing awkwardly by the registers for fifteen minutes waiting for the clock to hit noon so that I could actually purchase the one bottle of cooking wine in the basket.

Cooking wine is affected by blue laws too? I was always under the impression that if it was on the shelf next to vinegar and sherry, you didn't even have to get carded for it >_>

But I suppose some states would be dicks even about that.

No, no, I mean, I was buying standard wine for cooking. I have no idea if there's separate cooking wine shelved elsewhere; if so, I've never seen it when browsing the vinegar. Possibly that would've side-stepped the issue if I'd known about it at the time, but I was a noob cook who saw a recipe asking for white wine, shrugged, and went to buy a bottle of cheap Riesling.

It might depend on the store, but I've seen it (along with mirin) in the non-alcohol areas of groceries. I figured "cooking wine" is treated like vanilla, where it's not considered a beverage despite the alcohol content. Though, the stuff next to the vinegar wouldn't be something I'd want to drink either way (or, generally, cook with). Nor would I want to drink mirin, augh.

The really fun side effect is that instead of having liquor stores evenly distributed in a rational manner, you have large swaths of dry areas and then TEN MILLION LIQUOR STORES RIGHT HERE COME AND GET IT!

I took a week(ish) off the internet to get things done in life, and holy damn what a week it's been here on BF. I'm about four hours in catching up so far, and only the Drama Llama and half the January and Everything After subs are complete, not to mention the particular substance of so many huge things.

My sincere apologies, I can't believe I forgot to warn you about that. It's weird in NJ too, which made moving to CA odd (WHY IS THERE WINE AT THE SEVEN ELEVEN), but PA is worse.

Of course, I think just about everything about PA is worse than NJ. <3
