Goal: get good enough at singing to rent myself out on Overclocked. (I got to sing for a gaming session once, it was SO GREAT. I miss being kinda good.)

I know this is a bit old, but hey, that's me too! Luckily I got a little less dumb with time, and found someone who likes my awkwardness/is as awkward as me. And she has something shiny on her finger as of last New Years Eve. It worked out well!

As much as I've always loved Jolly Rancher hard candies, I can't help but feel I'm taking my life into my hands while eating these things. If it's not the constant fear I'm going to somehow bite down in such a way that it will adhere to and pull out a filling, or even crack a tooth, then it's the thought of my teeth rotting out of my head if I don't hurry up and brush them after eating so many as two candies.

It's a dangerous game I play, but the blood-red tongue makes it all worthwhile.

People sometimes ask me why I choose to continue living in Texas. Part of it is that my family lives here. The other part?

$515k around here buys you a 5 bedroom/4 bath 4,500 square foot house.

    Fuck the city.

I consider the high price I pay for rent (or real estate, if I were interested in buying) to be a tax on not living somewhere like the Texas suburbs or Oklahoma where my family lives. I pay it gladly.

    Jibble, is that your house?

A girl I knew from high school who I had a crush on, there weren't many I did not, hung herself last week. I had not talked to or seen her in 20 years, however, I am pretty bummed. I just remember her as being terribly unique and funny and sweet. Her husband who I had no memory of, but had found me on Facebook and friended me at some point, posted a picture of her that appeared to be from back in the day. Seeing that picture and no recent ones, it is like that girl I remember died and not a 40 year old wife and mother. I am not sure which is more sad.

It is weird how things from the past can reach up and poke you in a certain place and all of these nostalgic, melancholy, forgotten feelings come pouring out.

I know exactly what you mean. I posted briefly about this a few weeks ago, but an ex-girlfriend recently died (at age 28) of some medical complications from severe flu and related illnesses, and despite not thinking of her at all recently, it shook me up in a weird way.

Hell no. I'm not spending a half-million dollars on a house when I can move a scant couple miles further down the road and pay half as much.

Yep. And it is not like other people from my past have not died or had something happen to them. Some people just come into your life and reserve a little spot in your brain and you may not realize what they meant to you at the time or how much of an impression they made on you. The memory may fade or lie dormant or what have you, but it is waiting there to be re-awakened by who knows what.

I'm reading the book Gumboot Girls, about women who moved to the north coast of British Columbia in the 70s to live off the land, because my mom has a story in it. I'm not sure what other people get out of it, but for me it just makes me sad because it's basically a bunch of stories about my lost childhood. I don't know any of these women, but the life they're describing is the life I lived until I was 10, and it's gone now.

My girlfriend read it and wants to go see the cabin where I grew up, but I don't want to go back there now. I want to go back there in 1980, before the mountain was clearcut and the power lines were put in.

I had kind of the opposite reaction a while back, when looking at the high-mountain logging town I lived in until I was 13. Checking it out on Google Earth, I found out that they shut down the mill and turned the land into a new high school. Large swaths of cleared land have been turned into housing tracts. A huge influx of new people moved in because of the beautiful (debatable) scenery and the remote location. When I was living there, the town didn't have a single stoplight. Now they have a Subway and a Pizza Hut. The small-town turn-of-the-century character has been reduced to a one-block "historical site" with the old general store and saloon, and the old town hall that's now a frontier museum.

Shutting down the logging mill put an end to a lot of jobs, some families that had been working there for generations.

To which I say: GOOD. Every single one of those ignorant hillbilly motherfuckers is getting what they deserve - extinction.

You have to understand, these people - and I use the term loosely - make the cast of Swamp People look like Rhodes scholars. I was once screeched at by a woman "You think you're better than mah son just 'cause you can READ?" - her son was fifteen, and there was no irony at all in that mindset. They thought it was okay to just be ambitionless and dumb and accept the dull reality that they couldn't get anything better. Drop out of high school at 16, work in the mill or on a logging crew, get a paycheck, get drunk, go home and slap around the wife and kids for a bit, sleep it off, do it again.

I got ostracized for the sin of liking to read. Once I got asked "What the fuck are you doing with a book?" when I was about ten. By an adult. I was possibly the only person under the age of fifty to ever step into the town library - which was about the size of my office.

About the best scenario I'd always hoped for was for a meteor to come down and obliterate the entire town so I could journey back to ceremonially salt the ashes and piss on the graves.

I'll settle with them being replaced by modern civilization. Hail progress.

I found a stress ball a few minutes ago while I was avoiding my spring cleaning. Then I wondered, "Hey I should see if they have hand exercises you can do with these things! It'd give me something constructive to do with my hands while reading stuff online besides slapping them together strangely!*"
Sweet nunchucks, these exercises are tiring! My sympathy towards people in physical therapy has gone up by ten points.

*I have this weird thing where I like to be doing something with my hands almost constantly. This may or may not be a side effect of gratuitous game playing/book reading in my childhood. Also, my latest hand slap routine involves putting both hands into position, a thumb laying over a bent pinky while the other fingers are straight, and slapping those three fingers on top of the three fingers of the other hand. The slapping alternates back and forth. YEAH, IT'S DUMB. I KNOW. DON'T JUDGE ME.
