I realize that we don't have a general photography thread yet - or do we? - and if someone would like to make one I would be much obliged, but do any of our resident photographers/cinematographers have any thoughts regarding the recently announced Panasonic GH3? I had always considered getting a GH2 for some wannabe film projects but was holding off for the next in its line and now that it is here I am quite blown away by its feature/spec sheet. The only negative I can spot is the lack of an XLR input, but the 3.5mm in (vs the standard 2.5mm on most cameras) and the hot shoe (I assume I'll be able to hook up a set of proprietary mics to it, we'll see) more than make up for it - plus, you should be recording external mics to an external recording unit and only using on-board as a guide.

If it delivers, I might finally pull the trigger on something to film with. Especially if it debuts at its estimated sub-$1,300 price. Photography is a secondary concern, though I understand the Micro four/thirds setup as an alternative to DSLR has a large and rather vocal user base. They even make Lensbabies for it now!

Thanks in advance for any thoughts.

tl;dr: The GH2 and a nice lens might be a better option.

<Friend> Obviously I haven't had my hands on one yet, but impression is "very very very good, but probably more expensive than necessary unless your intent is to become the next EpicMealTime/freddiew/etc."
<Friend> With a GH2 you lose the 3.5mm jack (have to adapt from 2.5mm, not sure why), but I think that's about it; you can hack it to higher bitrates than the stock firmware on the GH3 allows (although it will probably be pushed even higher with its own hacks), and you save nearly $1000.
<Friend> GH3 will be better in low light, but probably not dramatically; resolution will be all-but-identical.
<Friend> Lenses are more important anyway
<Friend> Panasonic's new 12-35 and 35-100 f/2.8s are designed to compete directly with the pro offerings from the big DSLR makers
<Friend> I think my current suggestion would have to be get a GH2 and hack it; spend the extra money on lenses (14-140 is good for general use/home video, while if you want to do indie filmmaking the 12-35/35-100/45 macro-elmarit is probably the way to go (for a ton more money))
<Friend> effectively the same reason I'd suggest the 5D mark 2 over mark 3 for video primary use case.
<Me> mind if I pass this along to a friend?
<Friend> That's fine. When I make suggestions I prefer to talk to them about what exactly they want to do to make better recommendations, since that's really at the core of everything, but that's my general spiel when it comes to micro 4/3 video at the moment.
<Friend> I wish I could give better info but unfortunately I haven't gotten to use the new stuff yet
<Me> no worries, that was really helpful
<Friend> I've used a GH2 but never gotten to see a GH3 or the new lenses in person

Spoilers: my friend is a pretty rad guy and awesome with photography. I should convince him to post some stuff here.

Oop, some more thoughts from RadFriend:

<Friend> Personally I feel really torn when it comes to micro 4/3
<Friend> The GH2, GX1, and E-M5 are all absolutely beautiful cameras that are stupid fun to shoot with and pump out amazing images.
<Friend> But they're basically the same price as similarly-built cameras with larger sensors and in many cases more customization
<Friend> For the price of a GH2 you can get a D7000, which is actually better for video until you hack the GH2, and quite a bit faster on the draw for photos, and also has dual card slots and a much larger lens ecosystem.
<Friend> And of course the larger sensor makes images pop more; shallower depth of field, better performance in low light, and more dynamic range, esp. in shadow detail.
<Friend> And lenses again are similar; lenses with approximately the same relative focal length and the same absolute aperture are almost the same price. The micro 4/3 ones look sleeker and are smaller and lighter, but their relative aperture is much smaller, and they tend to be less well-corrected in the corners of the frame due to the short rear throw.

Parsing all of that excellent info, but for now I will say THANK YOU, Ely. Please relay my gratitute to your most radly friend, as well.

Yeah I agree with the mysterious stranger, the micro 4/3 systems are nice in theory but for that kind of money I'd get an old school RPG, I mean DSLR instead. For photography anyway.

Baker , than you for recommending the Understanding Exposure. I used to use manual film cameras back before digital (my dad's Pentax) and I actually bought this Canon because I couldn't afford a DSLR, but this camera actually has manual settings. Soo... fiddling around with the book and settings, things started to come back to me!

Just as a quick example of what something like Yin/Yang can do, here's a side-by-side of the original image and a version I edited in about one minute by darkening the sky a bit and lightening the ground a bit:

You get some extra color and detail (especially in the cloud), and in far less time than it would take to make manual tweaks.

So. I'd like to do a segment on photography, would anyone here agree to chat for a few minutes about this stuff? Ideally in the next, say, 12 hours or so? 1 or 2 people, who know more or less what they're doing, is what I'm looking for. Anyone?

    Bueller?
  15. candide Armchair Designer

I can do it, but I only have a webcam microphone which I use for skype so the sound isn't great and I also tend to be on the "less" end of the knowing what they're doing spectrum.

I generally can't stand "hey, I tilted the camera!" pics, but this one is an exception. It says, "It's worth turning the world to capture this rose at just the right angle." Plus you get that great diagonal divide. Well played.

I also generally can't stand heavily filtered pics, but that Bug one is great. It's nice to see the grunge inherent in the background instead of plastered on the front like a bad coffee stain, and your filtering really makes it (and the car) pop.

Took the young fella for a photo walk on Saturday, trying to encourage him to use his VTech Buzz Lightyear Camera to do more than just take pictures of the skirting boards (don't ask) and record videos of himself making his favourite noise (no, really, don't ask). Unfortunately it started raining so we didn't get much, of which these are the ones I was happiest with:

    IMG_6023.jpg IMG_6024.jpg IMG_6027.jpg

I was going to see if I could figure out which photo he took in the second image, but unfortunately he seems to have run out of flash space sometime on Wednesday. Thanks, mostly, to the aforementioned skirting board shots.
