So you probably own this because you bought it on a Steam sale last year or something, but you've probably never played it because Renegade ... Ops? A top-down arcadey twin-stick shooter? Meh.

It's really not meh. I didn't expect this game to be as fun as it is. Looking on Steam, I see that less than 50% of the people who have played it have even made it to the end of the first mission. So I figured I'd make this thread, because:
    1. The second mission is WAY better than the first mission. Not only does it flow better, but you really start to get access to more special weapon drops which add a lot of fun to the mayhem.
    2. You don't really get a sense for how your character's skill tree is affecting you until the second mission.
You should send this straight to the top of your backlog. In fact, stop playing the game you're playing right now, take a break and just boot this up and play the first mission, it will take you 15 minutes.

I liked the first mission, and even finished it, so told my friends to get it and they did.

But we never played it. :(

Yeap, it's a great game. I never beat it, but I think I'm on mission 8 or something like that.

The skill trees though... yeah, those are really pretty worthless. Two of the three columns are exactly the same for everyone, and only the special weapon tree for each character is different. I don't see any compelling reason for them, other than maybe choosing some other perks if you're failing a mission on a harder game mode.
  4. Bahimiron Already Beat BF's New Expansion

Somebody awesome gave it to me earlier this year. I beat the first mission twice, but ended up playing something else before I ever started the second. Maybe I should give the second a try.

One thing that sorta makes me sad is that there isn't a chopper-only game mode. They do such a great job of making me feel like I'm playing that old Genesis game Desert Strike (or Jungle Strike).

It's Jackal meets Jungle Strike. I beat it like a year back. One of the best games of the modern era I've played.

Reminds me to play the DLC.

I'd bet a lot of people who never made it to the end of the first mission were playing with keyboard and mouse. I would be one of those people and can confirm that mouse and keyboard in this game will make you think unkind thoughts about the developers for a good long time. Maybe forever.

I eventually got a controller but the moment passed and I've not tried it again since.
  8. Not One Of Us Worked The System

A good point. I haven't tried it with M+K, as I knew it'd be a twin stick shooter, so I've only played it with a wired 360 controller, which was perfect.

I got used to M+K. What helped out A LOT was to switch the driving mode over to the non-default, I think it was called "tank mode" or something, where A+D would turn you left or right while W+S were accelerate and reverse.

By default I think the buttons would send you in that particular direction, which made diagonal driving annoying as hell. The game got a lot easier when I switched the control mode.

Or... just get a 360 controller.

I agree that the skill trees aren't too useful when it comes to figuring out different builds, but to give you a sense of advancement they're definitely appreciated. Just being able to unlock the skill which regenerates a little bit of health made my dude feel a lot more powerful.

I can totally see that. Getting a wired xbox controller for my PC was one of the best things I ever did, to be able to enjoy Steam Sales. Hell, playing Skyrim on my PC with it was a joy.

This game, I loved the over-the-top nature of the cutscenes. It is worth finishing just for how laughable I found them. The ending was short, sweet and awesome at the same time as I recall.
  13. Creole Ned Being Nice For A Week

This thread has made me seriously consider bumping it to the top of my backlog. I'll see if I can rope a few friends into trying it again. I was the only lol nub who didn't have a controller the one time we all played together.
  14. Brian Seiler Worked The System

It's not terrible. It's probably the best combination of twin stick shooting and some sort of advancement mechanic ever, and the story is basically the G.I. Joe cartoon from the eighties. I think I bogged out around the fourth level back when it came out, but since the expansion pack and the new characters, I keep meaning to get back in. I would do the hell out of that if the publisher would make it cross-play compatible on PS Vita, since my Plus membership apparently gets me this for free anyway.
  15. JoshV Keeper of the Elemental Materials

I played the heck outta this on XBLA, unfortunately no one else I knew had it for XBLA. It really did remind me of GI Joe, but a bit more violent. It was short, but it was lots of fun while it lasted.

I think it's perfectly fun in single player, but that's because I'm a taciturn misanthrope. Also, I'm keen to beat FrankA's high score.

Renegade Ops is completely awesome. I played through it on the PS3 since it popped up for free on Playstation Plus.

I still have one of those? Sweet.
  19. Pogo Hard Cider Gal

Yeah I agree with that, they do let you feel the difference in power as you level up the skills.

I guess you don't know me because I played the heck out of this on XBLA too! Seriously great twin stick shooter, and I have played a bunch.
