So they finally greenlit this thing a few months back, and in addition to not being able to snare Hugh Laurie to play the villain (we instead get Michael Keaton), and having a script that has been completely panned, production isn't going well either.

On top of that, this is the new Robocop armor.

I think I just threw up in my mouth a little.

Utterly generic, uninspired, with not a single piece that seems to pay homage to the original.

I like the robocop crysis suit, but I wouldn't pay money to see it. Between Robocop, Starship Troopers, and Total Recall, it seems like the winning formula is, "Let's get Paul Verhoeven to direct a ridiculous action movie." Apparently the powers behind the projector are convinced that we need remakes of Paul Verhoeven movies, without the crazy Dutch guy.

All I have to say to that is, "Bitches; leave."

I saw an interview with Meirelles in tv a few weeks ago in which he basically said the same thing regarding Padilha's problems with the movie. A shame really since Padilha is extremely talented and I believe he could do some great work if given the chance. Unfortunately I guess that's not how things work in Hollywood with newly-arrived directors.

I might have a little bit of trouble accepting an actor whose previous role could be described as "never not smoking guy" as Robocop. I think I saw a trailer (possibly for the sequel) a few too many times as a child.

So, I'm guessing they'll be fleshing it out with CGI or something? I mean.... it looks like something you'd see on the cover of a bargain bin knockoff 360 shooter sequel. I want to see corpse debris plugged into robot parts so that it'll become a cyborg, not what looks like a healthy dude dumped into a power suit.

So if you guys were curious about Jose Padilha (the director of the reboot), Elite Squad: The Enemy Within (just ignore the name) is actually a good to very good corruption procedural, and if this were a Brazilian-oriented forum someone could orient us about the degree to which it Hurt Lockers or accurately represents aspects of the situation there or just provides a good movie by borrowing from reality. Goes off PS3 watch instantly soon, though.

I was preparing to make a witty remark about the new armor, but it's just so bland.

There are no stupid design features to latch onto and mock, because there are no design features.

Enemy Within is actually the second movie of the series, but I'm not sure the first one was as widely distributed internationally. The first movie also dealt with police corruption. Like Enemy Within, it had a tight plot and was gripping throughout. However, it also took a much less clear stance on the justifiability of police brutality. I can't imagine the point of the movie was to endorse it, but I can also see someone who already approves of a brutal police unit not being dissuaded against it by the movie.

I'm fairly ignorant about crime in Brazil, so I can't comment much on the accuracy of the movies in any detail, other than vaguely stating that police corruption and crime are real issues. From a quick research on wikipedia, the paramilitary plot in the second movie is based on reality, and some time ago a journalist investigating the subject was held and tortured by one of these groups published and a story about the ordeal.

Well, it's certainly what documentaries would have you believe, especially Manda Bala (also on Watch Instantly) and News From A Private War (a pain in the ass to get, from the people who brought you City of God later). I don't question that systemic corruption of the sort in the movie is rampant. It's the issue of BOPE's role in the movie, the layers of ambiguity around Nacimiento, the ending...all of these things are things I would like to hear about from someone with a personal connection to the subject matter or at least some context to draw from. I feel like with Bigelow there's a lot that talent could obscure, but nothing that I know about.
