Robotech

Discussion in 'Entertaining Diversions' started by Eric T. Cheng, Jan 24, 2013.

  1. It looks like Warner Bros. is still going ahead with a live-action adaption of Robotech (which was an American adaption of three separate Japanese anime series, The Super Dimension Fortress Macross, Super Dimension Cavalry Southern Cross and Genesis Climber MOSPEADA) with the hiring of tv commercial director Nic Mathieu.

The books were better than the series, even The End Of The Circle.

God I loved the battles in Macross Zero.
  6. Too bad the series had some mysticism bullshit in it.

    I fucking love robotech.

I have zero faith in Hollywood's ability to do this even remotely well.

Wow, that's a lot more advanced than the Robotech series I watched as a kid. Looks awesome.

Funny, I just rewatched the first several episodes of the Invid Invation part of the series (the third part). The storytelling and writing does not hold up well, but man I love the Cyclone armor. That stuff is just so cool.

I always disliked that particular series, although I completely agree with you on that cyclone armor. I had a dream once where I had something similar to it and could fly as well. I realized it was a dream and was having a blast. Never again have I been so fortunate!

The Cyclone armor makes everything stupid about Series III worth it. I remember as a kid having fake Cyclone fights in the yards just running around and announcing that we were launching missles at each other.

I have no idea how we figured out who won, but it was probably more accurate than Lasertag.

My favorite part is how they show how intricate the transformation process is, compared to other Macross series. It felt, to me, more grounded, and the awesome maneuverability of the Variable Fighters and their 3 different configurations, when used in the right situation, was heavily explored. It's the origin of everything, so it makes sense.

    No love for Macross: Frontier?!
  17. Unlike Michael Bay's Transformers movies the designers of the Macross mechs actually designed how the Variable Fighters would transformer between the three configuration. I prefer the Macross Plus designs as they addressed the weakness of the cockpit being so vulnerable in the original Macross fighters.

I have the red striped version of this Skull Leader toy.

I would love to get the G1 Autobot Jetfire toy (one of my cousins had it as a kid) because it has it was essentially the Macross VF-1S Super Valkyrie with armour and rocket booster backpack.

    I never saw Macross: Frontier.

I totally had that Jetfire figure, and it was awesome. He was totally different from all the other Transformers.

I'm thinking it must have been Invid Invasion I watched as a kid, because I definitely remember the Cyclone armor.

Somewhere in the basement I've got the Skull One toy with the super veritech armor. Those things were expensive back in the day; like 90 bucks apiece!

Stop calling it Invid Invasion, fools. It was New Generation or the Third Robotech War. Also, it was probably my favorite of the three, so stop bagging on it or I will shoot you with neutron-s missiles. I liked the Invid way more than the boring ol' Zentraidi or the Robotech Masters, whose deal I could never quite understand. And Alpha Fighters were cooler than Valkyries. Also, Cyclones. And the whole thing was super dark. I mean, Robotech is hooked on battles that destroy 99% of humanity, the Macross War ends with one and then most of Southern Cross takes place during one, but New Generation starts with one and then ends with another.

(And yes, it really probably doesn't hold up.)

(Now that I think about it, New Generation had all the worst characters. Lancer. Annie. Lunk.)

(And the song 'They Are In Love' was easily the worst on my Robotech soundtrack.)

(Though said soundtrack didn't have 'To Be In Love', so maybe things could have changed. If only silver suns had golden moons and each year had thirteen Junes.)

    ('Look Up' was dope, though!)

That alone justifies the 3rd series.

Annie. Ugh. And when I rewatched it recently my kids were watching with me and Lancer/Yellow Dancer completely blew their minds.

Scott, Rand, and Rook were pretty good, though.

The New Generation struck me as weird because of how abruptly things changed from the Robotech Masters story. It's like "Yayyy! We won!" Then most of humanity is either wiped out or enslaved by a NEW race of invaders. What happened to Dana and her gang? Dunno. The seams of the patchwork nature of the show and how it was assembled from unrelated material really showed through there.

    NYOOOPE.

As far as I'm concerned, Robotech = Macross. New Generation/Mospeada was mediocre at best and Masters/Southern Cross was fucking unintelligible. And Macross Plus beats them all.

Alphas cooler than Valks? You joke me, sir. I have an original Skull Leader model (VF-1S) with reactive armor attachments, still shrinkwrapped. It's a model kit, not the toy. I can't bring myself to open it, and mostly just admire the Engrish and Japanese on the box. Bought at a garage sale for $2!

I do enjoy the way Alphas can wear Betas as a bigass rocket backpack. I bet Beta pilots develop a real inferiority complex over the whole arrangement.

Although come to think of it, maybe the REF psychologically screens its veritech pilots for a love of giving or receiving piggyback rides, and assigns them accordingly.

Yeah, it wasn't bad. They really nailed the look and feel of the corkscew missiles, if nothing else.
  32. JoshV Keeper of the Elemental Materials

The actual plot and missions were mostly just mediocre, but the flying, transforming, and missiles were really spot on.
