OMG Guys. A shipping thread that I never knew! /rejoice

Anyway, my first ever stable OTP ship has to be RuminaxChelsea from Tokyo Underground. One of the first and best anime I ever had the pleasure of remembering. Then there was IchiHime (Bleach), InuyashaxKagome (InuYasha), PokeShip (Pokemon Anime obviously), and of course, JuudaixAsuka (Yu-Gi-Oh! GX And yes, I regret nothing) After searching the internet more I have found what you called Slash which I got on aboard around my Prince of Tennis fandom.

The Hetalia fandom is where I started taking the OTP thing a bit more seriously (this is also the first time I actually loathed a ship buuuut don't worry. I never complain about it except for my real life friends and even then they knew it was a joke) I started shipping AmeriPan and got quite into it for a while (you can still see the folder full of the pictures *shudder*) and then the shipping wars happened with USUK and FrUK. It was bloody and messy and people pulling out a Wikipedia Article left and right.

Then, Persona 4: The Animation phase happened. Brosuke/Brotagonist is obvious OTP and will be continuing on forwards. (Good Omens count with Crowley/Aziraphale sweet fluff hahahaah)

Anyway, I'm glad people don't start shipping wars here. This just proves how mature the BF community is right?

Speaking of this, I have an Extended Definition Essay regarding this topic and I would like to ask for everyone's help on this. Can you guys answer a few questions?

    1. Generally speaking, why do you (or the fangirls) ship in the first place?
    2. Is shipping just a girl thing?
    3. Any major experiences when you shipped (like wars and stuff)?
    4. Do you think by being family-oriented or just being a lovable/hopeless romantic kind of person makes you more susceptible to shipping?
    5. ???
    6. Profit!

Thanks to everyone who will help me out! ♥♥♥

... Sooo you guys can derail a normal thread into several pages of shipping.
You get a shipping thread, and derail it into Sherlock Holmes sexism(?) discussion on the second page.

I think I may ship the LP subforum x Derailing.

Honestly though, I don't ship a lot of stuff. To me, shipping is when two characters are a couple/romantically involved and I'm just not interested in romance. Incidentally that's how I justify liking shippy stuff of couples I don't particularly support as long as it's innocent enough stuff like hanging out or cuddling. Anything that can be interpreted as "we're buddies" as opposed to "we're lovers" is fine because it's adorable.

Though interestingly, I guess I do kinda-sorta ship stuff involving the RP characters in this roleplaying room I'm in. One of my characters in particular is ridiculously easy to ship with literally anything to the point that I made a game out of it, while two others are such an OTP that we tend to joke about how one of them (a guy with 2-3 love interests) will just dump them all in favor of his (rude, mean, non-human) friend. And a third duo is the most adorable yet dysfunctional couple ever. Though I imagine all that stuff to just be cute innocent fluff, so it feels weird to call it shipping... like I'm breaking my own definition.
Canon couples? I'm generally happy enough just seeing them interacting as the friends or enemies they are. Though there are a few pairings I approve of just because they're adorable.

I don't generally like it when people ship siblings or best friends -- at least not when it's taken to "yeah they're having sex" levels. I've seen it a lot and it feels like nobody can like anyone in any way without wanting to screw them, you know? I'm fine with cute snuggly stuff, but... You can be "best friends" without being "best friends with benefits".
And those are all my opinions on shipping.

I jumped the gun on Elementary and wasn't very fair when I watched the first episode. I'll stop being stubborn and give it another go the next time I'm in a Sherlockian mood.

Because it feels like a change done because Watson is a woman. And Canon stuff about Watson's military background in the novels.

Anyway, I friend lend me a dvd, so I might end up watching it soon.

EDIT: And then Chrome hated me.

    <3
I'm so there when the series cames out.

To answer your question...I just ship. It depends on chemistry and headcanon stuff? For istance, I ship Destiel in Supernatural, but It's also because he was already kinda bi in my headcanon, so to me Castiel was there to drag him out of perdition the closet. It makes me like the pairing more, but it's all headcanon. And I ship Sherlock Holmes and John Watson only in the BBC serie, because they have a different relationship and stuff.

Shipping is a fan thing, but not all fans ship. It just happens.

Nah, it just means that I have a soft spot for happy families and couples setting down. I will always defend Arthur and Molly Weasly with the passion of thousand suns.

    I don't really understand what's happening here.
    But hello!
  7. Randissimo Hatoful Pigeon

OH GOD HETALIA. Been there, done that, finished with it. Never been a fan of USUK, though. Ever.

    ANYWAY, ANSWERING QUESTIONS TIME!

    1. I ship because I find romance fascinating, quite simply. I adore how people interact with each other, so I sometimes "ship" people in a platonic manner as well. Basically, I'm into analyzing and observing people interact with each other. To me, it's really about dynamics, I guess? I want to know how someone would interact with a specific other person, different personality types clashing/complementing with each other, etc, etc. why other people ship, though? I can't say, I guess for some it's for titillation or they find it cute.

    2. No. Ignoring the fact I'm trans*, I have gotten into intense shipping conversations with numerous guys, one of whom was a fellow Zutara fan. I know the majority of shippers are female since, well, most people who ship are generally young teens/young adults and guys in those age groups are, apparently, not into romance, but I call BS on this. Most just don't talk about it or, for those who really don't, they focus more on the plot, I guess. I really don't gender this stuff, though.

    3. Hetalia, nightmare though that was. I generally avoided ship wars, I wasn't big on those, and the most I got into was heated but civil debates with friends. I guess the closest I can get to was the huge war between Light/L and L/Light shippers in the Death Note fandom. Seme/Uke dynamics were SRS BSNS, and though I was of the camp that had them switch, I insisted L had the most leverage/experience/whatever in terms of being the dominant partner. (The guy wasn't socially awkward because he didn't understand people, he just gave no fucks about social mores. That doesn't mean he'll be the Uke, and frankly, neither of them were. Light was just the more likely partner to fit that role.)

    4. Possibly? I'm not a romantic, though, and that hasn't stopped me from being an incredibly avid shipped though. I guess I'm pretty sociable, though, which might be a reason? I honestly can't say. I know some folk who aren't romantics who ship and hopeless romantics who don't, so I honestly can't say.

    5. BANANA.

    6. Aw yiss.
  8. Antiqua Magister Mundi Elyscape

Now that Randissimo mentioned that, I think I probably spent hours with a couple of friends and history books when arguing against UsUk a few years ago, does that kind of stuff count as "major stuff that happened" ? Yes, Hetalia is my excuse to ship stuff an be an history nerd.

I also got involved in a relatively "huge" argument when someone said something like "gay stuff doesn't exist outside fanfictions". But arguing about slash used to happen a lot (it still happens in a few occasions, but not in a "YOU SICK PERVERTS" kind of way anymore).
  9. videetcredere Already Beat BF's New Expansion

Sure, I can get over my lurking long enough to help with academics. Are you me I wrote an essay on the familial relationship between two robots as my first EDE for psychology.

    1. Personally, it tends to be because both characters interest me, I find the dynamics interesting, and it's just something I want to explore. Though it should be mentioned that anything I 'ship'can include non-romantic pairings. For me it's more exploring the dynamics under different circumstances, including romantic ones.

    2. No. Believe me, no. It seems to be more prevalent (or just more blatant) with females, but plenty of people of all genders and sexes ship.

    3. All of my ships are obscure, hidden, and not really well-known by the fandom, so I've never had to deal with a shipping war. ...Come to think of it, I don't think I've ever seen a shipping war in this fandom. The most I've seen is people going 'please don't use these really common pairings to fill this kink meme request'.

    4. It may or may not; I know I'm a hopeless romantic at heart, but I don't really ship a lot of things. The few I do, I will probably ship in hell.

It's my first time posting in this thread since I didn't really have much to contribute. Anyway, I'll try my best to answer these questions for you, Miaki-sama. ♥

    1. For me, I usually ship people together who I think suit each other. I know that's a pretty obvious answer, but I'll try to explain how the process usually goes for me. First, it starts off with chemistry. If two characters have good chemistry and have had steady conversation over a period of time, then I start to think, "would they be good together?" From there, I begin to look at their relationship to see whether or not both of them would benefit from being together romantically. Or, if it would be detrimental for them. That's not to say I haven't shipped a few characters together who weren't good for one another. It's just that generally, I try to ship characters together who help display one another's best qualities. It's as if what one lacks, the other is able to make up for. Two sides of a coin, you could say.

If I'm looking at fangirls and why they ship characters together, the first answer that pops up in my head is 'superficial reasoning'. From what I've observed, it's as if relationship dynamics and the deeper issues between characters are cast aside for other things. Like how good the characters look and how they would look even better together. I know that's a fair bit of generalizing on my part but fangirls, in my eyes, are pretty superficial by default. That's why they're fangirls? I've also shipped characters together for superficial reasons, so I'm no saint either. Still, it seems like most fangirls ship based on things only visible on the surface, like looks.

    2. No, I don't think it is. Girls may be more vocal about it, but I know plenty of people from both genders who ship. There's no predisposition to shipping just because you're female.

    3. Hmmmm, maybe once or twice? I think the most memorable (and not in a good way) experience I had occurred back when I used to watch The Vampire Diaries. On that show, I used to ship Bonnie and Damon together. Problem was that the majority of the fans preferred Damon with Elena, and whenever he had scenes with other females there was a group of people who would take it upon themselves to rant about how horrible said female was. I'm not one for conflict, but there were a lot of words to be had with those people, and I took it upon myself to put them in their place. You shouldn't bash other characters in order to validate your ship. Just, no.

    4. I think it may play a big part, but it isn't one of the main reasons? I consider myself to be a hopeless romantic and I love all things involving, well, love. Despite that, I don't always ship characters together. Sometimes I just prefer to enjoy the overall dynamic between all the characters and I don't really hone in on just two. I think there are so many factors when it comes to why people ship, and being family-oriented or a hopeless romantic are just two of many.

So you two like to friendship, eh? Eh?

Though I agree that I get interested in making/examining non-romantic relationships between characters in addition to romantic pairings. Shipping is definately assumed to have romantic connotations, but I get so completely skeezed out when I stumble over things like Wincest (Dean Wincester x Sam Wincester paired together in an incestual manner) in the Supernaural fandom. Injecting sex into all shipping is not something beneficial for me.

Course, I almost always root for the B guy in any love triangle, despite knowing that A guy is going to get the girl. And most of my favorite ships are the crackiest of crack, along with a good serving of Alternate Universe or Alternate Reality just to make the pairing possible.

I'll work on the above questions, though my shipping experiences have been rather isolated.

    1. Shipping occurs because of character chemistry, whether that be UST, rivalry, best buddiness, one-up manship, aesthetic appeal, or whathaveyou. Sometimes I think shipping comes about because the audience is dissatisfied by the canon choice of no explicit pairings or the chosen pairing for the characters in question. Ex: the giant flame wars/blog spams I've seen over Avatar: The Legend of Korra's executive romantic decisions- I don't think anyone really came out of that canon satisfied. I ship Tahno/Korra or Tarrlok/Korra, Mako can go suck an egg and I don't want Korra to abuse Bolin more than she already has. For me, it's more exploration than serious business, because I don't mind many different pairings in different settings- I'm interested in how the relationship dynamics can change and how so. And really it's fiction, isn't different possibilities what it's all about?

    2. It's definitely not restricted by gender. I remember my father telling me about a guy back in the 1960s that wrote a song of how Eowyn with Aragorn was fire while Arowyn was ice- though a lot of this is character preference, in that Eowyn kicks ass and is solidly present within the narrative while the elf princess is not. And pairing kickass characters with agency just means, things will get done. But yeah, guys might now post blogs about it but given a love triangle I bet they'll tell you which pairing they'd prefer if you asked.

    3. Uh, not so much here. I have plenty of personal ships for different fandoms but haven't ever been active in a community that broke out into shipping wars. Although way way back I did write some AU Final Fantasy 7 fanfiction with the Aeris/Sephiroth pairing I can picture your faces right now which I posted and got some positive reviews for. I'm assuming those who didn't like the ship just didn't click as I never got a flame.

    4. While I do enjoy a good dose of romance in the media I consume, I think that more influences how often I like to image how X and Y's eventual married lives would turn out and just how many fat babies they'd have while keeping in touch with friends and dealing with in-laws. But I also like my drama, as not all relationships will be in a setting where the participants can be on equal footing and not all motives behind beginning a relationship are pure. I'm really fine with both as long as it's handled well enough within that fictional world that it doesn't break my suspension of disbelief. One of my favorite tropes is Arranged Marriages that End In Love, despite how it isn't a popular one.

    5. 1,000 fanbabies

    6. And then the second generation rises up, embroiled in the wars of their fathers and intrigue of their mothers- oh wait, that's not the ending people want?

You know, I haven't watched any of the Sherlock/Supernatural stuff precisely because of the shipping. I dunno, when shipping gets so all-pervasive like that I find it takes away from the experience rather than adding to it. Also, I just hate Sherlock Holmes shipping of any kind. I loved the original Arthur Conan Doyle stories and shipping any of the characters together just feels really really weird. I've always thought of Holmes as an asexual aromantic anyways, so pairing him with anyone at all kind of squicks me out. Being in love is intensely un-Holmes.

Ack. I completely forgot that I'd promised to gush about my ships.

I'm not a heavy-duty shipper. I don't read fanfic because I'm really picky about the stuff I read and most fanfic is terrible. I decided long ago that it wasn't worth it to wade through a sea of bad to mediocre stories in order to find the true gems. I never got into shipping wars. I mostly watched from the sidelines. One of the most intense ones that I remember from when I was a kid were IchigoxRukia vs IchigoxOrihime. I was firmly in the former camp because I adored Rukia and her banter with Ichigo was hilarious, but getting into (sometimes really vicious) fights about it just wasn't worth it to me.

Anyways, I'll just list some of my favourite ships. Most of them are left over from back when I actually shipped stuff more actively than I do now.

Duck x Fakir (Princess Tutu) - Needed more screentime, dammit! And also a more satisfying ending. I actually tried looking for good fanfiction for this one because I didn't want it to just...end.

Saya x Haji (Blood+) - Those two are just adorable. I loved how the show sort of revealed more about their past relationship as it went on.

Shepard x Garrus (Mass Effect 3) - The third game broke my heart. Fuck you, Bioware. Especially since I was one of the people who campaigned to have him as an LI in the interim between the first game and the second. This ship is the dearest to my heart because of that.

Masumi x Maya (Glass Mask) - This manga is a monster. It started in 1976, is over 50 volumes long, and it's still not done. I watched the anime first and I just fell in love with these two. They're probably gonna be canon but we don't know yet because it's still being written. After 37 years. Also, there's that age difference thing but ehhhh. I find that I'm alright with it in this instance.

Artemis x Holly (Artemis Fowl) - Already talked about this upthread.

Parin x Puku (Gurumin) - Nobody will know what this is. A very nostalgic ship for me, though.

Seras x Pip x Alucard x Integra (Hellsing) - I just love them all, and I couldn't decide who I liked Seras best with (Alucard, Pip, or Integra) so I just ship 'em all together.

Nao x Akiyama or alternately, Nao x Akiyama x Fukunaga as an awesome triumvirate of friendship (Liar Game) - I actually don't really care if any romance develops for these ships. I just love the interactions between the characters.

Mercedes x Ingway (Odin Sphere) - I ship all of the other Odin Sphere ships too, but I just...I feel like this one needs me to ship it more (Ingwaaaay ;_;).

Vyse x Aika (Skies of Arcadia) - Awesome air pirate romance all the way! I just love Aika so much, and she and Vyse work really well together. I like the trio (Vyse, Aika, and Fina) as well, but as a friendship sort of thing.

Sheena x Zelos (Tales of Symphonia) - Sheena is way too good for Lloyd. Seriously girl, Zelos is so much more interesting.

Robin x Amon (Witch Hunter Robin) - Another anime that needed a goddamn resolution. This is a very weird show. It was one of my first animes ever and I think was maybe 11-12 when I watched it. It was all dark and brooding with a minimalist script and a lot of lingering shots of scenery. It was like...european arthouse anime, though a bit pulpier than that because of the supernatural crime drama elements. I really liked it, though, and Amon the brooding taciturn tall dark and handsome partner of the female lead kinda sorta pushed all my adolescent buttons. It also has a completely baffling OP:

I've watched the anime several times and I still have no idea what's going on there. The TV is...a metaphor?

This has become entirely too long so I think I'll stop it there.

I like Supernatural but the fandom scares me. All the female characters get such a negative fan reception for threatening their beloved Wincest. I mean, I can't blame the fans for all of the show's Women in Refrigerators stuff -- that started from the very beginning -- but it certainly doesn't help.

OH GOSH fine for Transformers primarily I ship every combination of Hot Spot/Silverbolt/Skyfire, plus pretty much every combination possible of the five Aerialbots and the five Protectobots. Well he acknowledged the age difference and that's the main issue with the romance as it stands (because we all know she's going to stop hating him...for the most part soon enough). What's scarier is that it's 50 volumes long and I'm still not bored of reading it. Usually there are a ton of filler chapters in stories of this length but no, everything is brilliant and gorgeous and sensational.

I don't really ship, I'm okay with canon ships for the most part. I wonder sometimes how this character would go with this character but it doesn't go anything beyond musing for a bit since I don't write or draw.

Which is all well and good I suppose, since it means I avoid a lot of crazy fans and don't come to dislike the show. (read: I like supernatural and hetalia).

Something that hasn't been mentioned is I know people that ship idols. k-pop and j-pop idols. They have headcanons of how relationship between group members work and such. It's interesting, in the examining group dynamic sense. I'm not so sure about romantically shipping people though.

Then again, I like actors in certain dramas enough that I wish they were together in real life sometimes so er. Although more often than not, I just wish they'd do another drama together.

Exactly. I just love how he cares about her so much that he's even willing to make himself the villain in order to give her the push she needs to excel. And he's always working behind the scenes to help her out. Gah, that series gives me too many shippy feels. And yes, the whole thing is wonderful, even though it's absolutely enormous. If it wasn't I wouldn't be this impatient for another volume.

Oh! Here's another ship that I adore:

Jade x Double H (Beyond Good and Evil) - I was one of the few who bought BG&E when it first came out. I was in grade 6 and our class was going on the standard week-long trip to Ottawa. I'd somehow conned my parents into giving me $200 for the trip, but I hadn't had much experience actually spending money. It was the last day of the trip and I still had about $120 left so I bought the most expensive thing I could think of, a video game. Anyways, BG&E is one of my fondest childhood memories and I loved Double H, Jade's goofy, dependable, bumbling beefy sidekick as soon as I saved him from that alien torture chamber. He's always there for Jade, and he's someone that she (and the player) can rely on through thick and thin.

A few more video game ships:

Warden x Zevran (Dragon Age Origins) - I always saw my Warden and Alistair as more buddies than lovers, and Zevran managed to charm me.

Revya x Gig (Soul Nomad and the World Eaters) - I thank the universe for TVtropes every day because without it I never would've heard of this game. It's amazing. I might do a more detailed post about these two at another time, but I love this game's story and how the relationship between these two forms the core of everything that happens.

FeMC x Ryoji (Persona 3 Portable) - My own personal canon of how P3's plot went down. If you factor in a relationship between Minako and Ryoji, it makes everything that happens much more poignant.

Robin x Chrom (Fire Emblem: Awakening) - It's been out less than a month, but these guys are already one of my OTPs. The only game I've played where I get to be one half of a badass married battle couple. It is as awesome as it sounds.

Ah, shipping. This is a thing I do.

    1. Personally, I ship because I have not reached the point in my life where I can actually trust another human being enough to be in a relationship with them, so I like to observe it[relationships] through characters. Like Randissimo and Vide have already explained, the character dynamics are really appealing to me. I don't actively look for it; when I see a spark between two characters, I kinda just start shipping it.

    2. No, I don't think so. I've gotten into pretty serious conversations with some guy friends involving their ships, and usually they have enough evidence to convince me. I think it just comes down to society constantly telling men that they are not allowed to like romance in fictional works.

    3. No. Most of my OTPs are from games where you can choose who the protagonist ends up with, or my own OCs. Most of the fans don't feel the need to start wars over their preference with my game OTPs and with my OCs, well, nobody can argue with me about them since I created them. I've seen some character bashing here and there for my game OTPs but I haven't been a part of any shipping wars.

    4. I may be a hopeless romantic, but I don't think that that really determined that I would ship. As I said before, I don't really take it seriously apart from being curious about their interactions. I think that everybody ships on some level, even if they don't vocalize it.

    6. And in that moment, I swear I almost knew what I was talking about

I doubt I was helpful at all but here's my two cents.

I feel like I have very few things I ship, looking at most other people's lists. Also like I have very few fandoms.

Somewhat relevant to this thread: I spent around two hours tonight figuring out the total possible pairings in the Transformers franchise, including all main continuities.

This thread made decide to read Liar Game all over again and I'm getting all sorts of Akiyama x Nao feels. Nao is actually a great character. I'm surprised at how much I like her because when I first started reading the manga I didn't think she'd be all that interesting. And Akiyama acts (and looks) like a more socially-adjusted L. <3 I think the Contraband Game is my favourite arc so far, but the second revival round is close. That's when we start getting the Akiyama x Nao x Fukunaga triumvirate of ultimate friendship. Also, Fukunaga's one of the coolest trans characters I've ever encountered in manga. She's handled surprisingly well.

I'll have to respectfully disagree with you here. I hate this mangaka's stuff, her writing is choppy, confusing and just plain boring to me.

Meanwhile, I feel like I'm the only one who was genuinely satisfied with the epilogue to Princess Tutu. I think it was a beautiful ending with a fantastic message and conveyed emotion perfectly.

Aw, sorry you don't like it. (Uh, sorry if that sounded patronizing, I wanted to sympathetically disagree...) I can agree with you on not liking...you said it was Shinshi Doumei Cross/Gentleman's Alliance Cross, right? Or was that someone else? Anyway, I agree with you on not liking that one much, although I did like the main character's friend...

Hm, more ships...um, I ship Sora/Kairi from Kingdom Hearts, although I can see Sora/Riku working in an AU. I ship Riku more with Namine, and Roxas with Axel or Xion...
