Anyone else see this? http://www.gamasutra.com/view/news/169299/Now_Sonys_got_its_own_Smash_Bros.php For the Vita. But, I had to stop and think, what characters would they use? I have a hard time even coming up with eight characters. Sackboy Kratos Crash Bandicoot ...Drake from Uncharted? Some grunt from Killzone? Just doesn't seem like there is a very long list of beloved mascots to use.
The guy from Infamous. The dad from Heavy Rain. (Or the fat private eye.) Edit: Oh, and maybe the Disgaea games.
Gene from God Hand! ... The Wanderer from Shadow of the Colossus? AaronSofaer - FF6 came out first on SNES, so I doubt it.
I saw a little thing about it on the Gametrailers show, and the dude from Twisted Metal is in it, as well as the fat princess from Fat Princess.
Ico? Kratos, Sackboy, and Cole will be there for sure. I'd say Snake but he's already been in Smash Bros.
There is a DS game from Japan that was like this, full of anime characters, Jump Super Stars, that was fantastic. I kind of hate anime, though, so I never knew who was who or what their powers were supposed to be. It was never released outside Japan due to copyright issues, but it still had an English fan translation to make it playable. Anyways, I'm game for ANY Super Melee Bros style game. I'm not game for a Vita, though.
I got this. It's actually pretty good! The mechanics are different than Smash Bros, and that's a good thing. It makes them feel like 2 different games. The rewards here are not very good, however, so I don't know if it'll have the same longevity as Super Smash Bros Brawl.
Good lord the ad for this game is terrible. The quirk is there, but crosses a line with Fat Princess being a Jack Black-look alike sitting on the toilet. I saw the 30 second cut of this, where Fat Princess on the toilet is a much bigger part of the ad than even the gameplay.
I watched the Quick Look on GB. People seem to think it's pretty good but it looks awful and generic to me. I am slightly confused about why the Big Daddy is in the roster, since Bioshock wasn't developed by Sony or exclusive to to the PS3. In fact, as the GB guys pointed out, it came out on the PS3 last of all platforms, and that version was strictly worse than the others.
Cos they needed more people in the roster and had the money to pick up the right to use some major, iconic figures that gamers would recognize? I mean, that's just a guess, but, uh, it's an obvious and likely correct one.
Sony could have mined their vast collection from the past, but you can't really market this sort of game with characters from long-forgotten PSX and PS2 games. So they turned to third-parties to license more recent characters. I bet they tried to get Spyro and Crash, but Activision either said no or just asked for too much money. I still don't get the inclusion of Fat Princess, however. Perhaps UnSub is right and she's just there to flesh out the female side.
The thing I really like about this game is the way they mash up IPs in levels. Like you'll be fighting in the San Francisco of Resistance, and then bam you get dragged up into space and you're being attacked by a Ratchet & Clank villain while you're beating on each other. That said, the version I played was pre-release so I don't know what may have changed.
That's all still in there. Unfortunately, from the Giant Bomb Quick Look it's the same transition, every time, so that sense of wonder doesn't last very long.
They have several characters that aren't owned by Sony (eg. Capcom, Konami, Namco, etc.), not sure why Big Daddy stands out to you.
It's weird to me -- I like it, but nothing about the Big Daddy says "Playstation" to me. Except maybe that I'm downloading Bioshock 2 from PS+ tonight or tomorrow before it expires. Heihachi, Metal Gear Man, Dante, all those are franchises that either started on Sony products or made their mark there. Bioshock's been worst on Sony.
The Big Daddy bothers me because it wasn't exclusive to the Playstation. And was about as far from exclusive as you can get while still being on the platform. Heihachi might not be a Sony property, but Tekken isn't anywhere else that I know of. This is supposed to be about Playstation icons, and they just aren't one. If there are others that are in a similar position, then I would be bothered by them too but am insufficiently aware of them to know who they are.
Looking at the cast you guys are right, Big Daddy certainly appears to have the loosest of connections to Sony
Yes but the three previous to it (excluding HD remakes) were exclusive to PS2 (I think 3 got a PC port actually). Metal Gear Solid has had releases on Xbox and so has Tekken.
They shoulda dug deep and pulled out some of their classic, beloved characters like an EyePet, Rohn Partridge and Ellen the Folklorist.
They should have filled it entirely with characters from Sony ads. They could have the white power woman, the sex pillows, the four-boob woman, the creepy baby doll, the PS9, a graffiti artist, the penis thumb, and that guy from that fake blog.
