Spunky steampunk mechanics and their robot sidekicks - Let's Play: Skyborn

Bringing you guys yet another RPG Maker game. Featured above is the ingenious Claret Spencer, our heroine and aforementioned mechanic. Below is the game summary:

Ooh! I'm normally wary of RPG maker games, but the art and premise look promising! Looking forward to seeing this in action!

This is something only those following my SaGa Frotier LP would get, but I laughed out loud at this xD

The game opens with a shot of Claret’s shop. Naturally I had no idea this was Claret’s shop when I first started, and my eye immediately went to the gentleman with the tophat and his ladyfriend.



Inside Claret is hard at work. She’s busy hammering away at something that doesn’t really look like it ought to be hit with a hammer. But what do I know? Coggie is the little robot sitting on the shelf beneath the first window (next to a big crate).

He hops down and rolls over to Claret.



Claret: Nothing wrong with the Industrial District... the sun breaks through the smog sometimes.

Sounds divine. Of course, at that moment a mouse appears and chews through some wires Claret had only just finished rewiring.



GASP.

We’ll never trade you in, Coggie!

$5 bucks says Coggie betrays you after enduring years of verbal abuse. Either that or he's a romance option.

Make a second Coggie
Trade it in for a cat
Profit! :D

Also I'd be more worried about those giant holes in the floor, ma'am.

Oooh, this! I love this game. I met the artist at Sakuracon in Seattle last year. It was awesome.

Coggie is the most adorable pet-thing I've ever seen in an RPG. That whizzing robot noise Coggie makes! It is the CUTEST AND MOST ADORABLE THING. YIIIIIIIIIIIIII!!!!! >:3

Oh. About the steampunk. I don't think this is spoiler-y, but spoiler-tagged just in case:

Enter Claret's spriteless brother, Jake.

Claret: Nothing I can't handle, just a little pest problem.
Jake: Okay. We've got an important client coming in soon, so you might wanna clean things up.



To prove it, she runs a little lap in front of him, like, "SEE? DO YOU SEE ALL THIS SPACE?" But...



Hey! She's a working woman! What do you expect? But Claret's a little embarrassed about not even having noticed her grimy clothes, making her snap a bit at her brother.



Damn straight. You're a mechanic, not a model.



Oh, shut up.

Oh god, the art is gorgeous!

And did someone say...CRAVATS????

Can't do anything without a gun, of course. Claret heads on over to the front desk in time to see a blond man trying to sneak upstairs. Following him are three guys in armor. The drag him to the center of the room.



And start hasslin' him. In the middle of the shop. What the hell?



Victim tries to stand up for himself.



But the "Prefect" punches him, insults him, and then threatens Victim.





Victim's not gonna take that lying down, though. These guys have no reason to be harassing him. Especially not in the middle of Claret's store.





And then Victim gets punched. AGAIN. At this point Claret finally steps in.



By shouting at the top of her lungs.

That sounds incredibly suspicious. Or is that just me being dirty.

Maybe it's just me, but does this line come off as rapey to anyone else?

Alright, first off, re: That character design, UNF. Very nice.

Secondly, I hate to break it to ya, kid, but when your name is Victim, odds are good you're not getting out of this mess unscarred.

He must have had exceptionally cruel parents.

Also, to discuss the actual game as she is played: 1) our awesome protagonist's clothes look stunningly clean in her actual character portrait, and 2) who wants a mechanic in stunningly clean clothes, anyway? If anything, the advice should be to grease up a little so that she looks like she actually gets her hands dirty.

Oh yeah. Grease her up real good, she's a dirty, dirty girl...

Anabanana? What are the chances Anabanana could possibly stumble into this thread? Oh, I find it quite unlikely that Anabanana would see this!

And yes, I really do love Claret's design. Goggles need to be back in vogue. Goggles and cravats.

Officer tries to go all high and mighty on her, but Claret ain't havin' none of his shit. She gets up in face and says



OH. So that's why he's here. A lot better than thinking they just chased him in here and started beating him up.



Claret intimidates the Prefect into taking a few steps back and --- wait. Are you a Prefect or an Officer? Make up your mind!



Claret doesn't give a shit either way and closes the distance between them.



"We were beating the crap out of your employee because that's our job. Well, actually, this time it was just for fun. But it's also part of our job."



Claret has had enough of this backsass. She heads over to her toolbox behind the desk



and starts chucking gears at the Skyborns. My kind of heroine.



Oh, screw you.

I see a treasure chest. I have this unexplicable urge to go in the game and open it.

Snark/Yelim? In that order? This hedgehog is way too prickly to be some wimpy bottom!

Also, holy crap, it's only the intro and Claret and her gear throwing is already endearing herself to me.

Corwin? Who's Corwin?



Victim! You have a name! And a sprite! And it's nice. Really liking the designs on your... vest... thing.

Oh wow, I didn't notice they had wings until I went back and checked.
I though they were capes!

Claret, sweetie, they didn't notice you at all until you started throwing gears at them. They were pretty focused on Corwin.



And this isn't the first time they've come to torment him. What the hell?



They beat him up DAILY and you didn't know about it?



"Let me just clean my blood out of the carpet before it stains and I'll be out of your way."

That is one rocking vest. Sort of brocade-y and everything. I can see I'm going to be liking the fashion choices in this game!

How to recognize very important characters: They have faces!

I really loved the gear-bullets Claret shot when she told the officers to get out XD
Too bad they weren't on the screencaps. Or were they?

Claret isn't the most observant person, is she?

Now if only they weren't such dicks.

They were, but it's a little hard to convey with a screenshot. If you look at the second to last picture in this post there's one right by her head that she'd just tossed (it's brown and right in front of the stairs, so it's really hard to see). In the next shot you see it landed near the front desk not even sure how it got there from where she threw it. Sorry about that! In the game you actually do see the gears flying over the shop as the Skyborns flee.

I'm curious, is throwing gears something she can do in battle? Because that would be awesome.

Sadly, no. She uses her power tools as weapons when fighting. Which is nice, but now you've got me wishing she could learn Gear Throw as a special ability or something.
