Starting this now because I think the tennis world just experienced its first nuclear apocalypse. Rafael Nadal, former World No. 1, current World No. 2, two-time Wimbledon champion, "The King of Clay", one of the greatest tennis players ever in the prime of his career, just lost... to Lukas Rosol, World No. 100, in his first ever Wimbledon match. Have this news article while I attempt to cram my brains back into my imploded skull. What the fuck, Nadal. WHAT THE FUCK.
Care to actually link the news article? Also, Rosol got knocked out in straight sets in his next match, but that Nadal game is going to stay with him forever I think.
http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/tenni...bledon-world-no-100-lukas-210550355--ten.html And an article about Rosol losing in his next match: http://sports.yahoo.com/news/rosol-1-round-beating-nadal-070651811--ten.html I don't understand. This. Just. I don't understand.
Every so often athletes are able to far exceed their norm. My favorite example of this is Jason Lezak in the 2008 summer games during the 4x100 freestyle relay.
Yeah, and the whole thing with the early roof-closing. Thing is, why would such an experienced player let his emotions get the better of him like that?!
So let's hope Fedex can return to the #1 position today! If he repeats the form he had against Djokovic, Murray has no chance whatsoever.
I think even the UK is only sort of half-heartedly behind Murray. From what I've seen he just doesn't seem to really enjoy tennis that much, or maybe he just hates all the audience, interviews and all other media. Most likely explanation I read on Twitter yesterday was: 'That's just what a Scotsman looks like when he's not allowed to eat chips everyday' EDIT: On the other hand: http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2012/jul/08/andy-murray-not-miserable-just-normal
Woohoo! Murray played well, but just couldn't keep up physically with the 5 years older Federer. Maybe next year, Andy.
I'm glad that Federer is back on form again. Very impressive, especially given his relatively older age.
Personally, I don't care what faces he does or does not make. But he could shut up, what's with the moaning?
I don't understand. I thought the notable human aspect of the final had been that Murray did get emotional. Is it that he wasn't negative or dramatic?
He got emotional at the end, which many found endearing because it seemed the more genuine for his earlier stoicism. During the tournament the media's attempts to embroider a false emotional narrative were pretty fucking irritating, and Murray's straight-faced rebuffs were pretty funny. For example, from this video at about the 4 minute mark: http://youtu.be/ggDXcMjGkFE paraphrase: "herpderp what do your parents think do you love your mummy" "fuck off I'd like to talk about the tennis" I'm with Charlie Brooker. My sporting tastes lean pretty technical because I play a lot of them myself, and I want to explore the interesting scenarios thrown up by world-class players. The constant emotional pandering in every sport in lieu of any actual analysis really gets my goat.
To clarify - the Charlie Booker article was written before the final. Like Hunty said, I think the emotion he did show was notable because it probably feels more genuine from someone who isn't overly effusive.
Anybody watching Azarenka vs Li Na in the women's finals right now? Li Na just twisted her ankle for the SECOND TIME this match and smashed the back of her head on the court in the process... and she's getting back in there like a champ. I'm tearing up slightly right now. The slow mo of her second fall was just excruciating... just looking at that ankle wobbling and her head hitting the hard court like that... I really hope she wins this. I really do. EDIT: Damn it. And now Azarenka's sobbing. Shit.
