So my time in this game had been winding down, but I'd been looking to do some coop with a friend. So after my CK2 install was done, I opened up DS just like I've done a thousand times before. Probably literally. Except this time it would only log in to offline mode. I checked my xbox, checked my GFWL marketplace app, and logged in through my browser, and nothing seemed wrong from there. I checked Arkham Asylum, and that also refused to go online. I restarted everything. I uninstalled both of the GFWL components in the add/remove programs control panel, and reinstalled them. Nothing. I tried to follow these instructions. Nothing. Also, Windows installer cleanup has to come from softpedia now because windows won't support it any longer, so I left that alone for now. My queue actually came through with MS support. Cathy passed on the following instructions: This, of course, did nothing. She then started looping back through steps in this list already, so I called it a night with that angle. I then used Windows installer cleanup from softpedia to nuke the sign in client as well as the other two GFWL components. They were gone, finally, and GFWL setup finally acknowledged it needed to download a new sign-in client...until we got to this gem At that point I noticed Windows update was bleeping, and a bunch of .net updates wanted to happen. So fuck it, I did it, and now I'm going to restart as it instructs. But this is bullshit. I guess it's funny that it took this long to happen, and then it just flips me the bird like that. Also, after the MS protips, my Arkham no longer recognizes even the offline sign in, so that's pretty dope.
LK: I had a weird problem with GWFL earlier, too. It kicked me into offline mode despite functional internet and then (a few hours later) it signed me in offline a second time. I clicked home then "connect" (or whatever that big button said) and it connected. Then I restarted DS and it logged in online fine. I don't know that this is going to help you at this point because it seems way too far gone after the "assistance" from MS. Good luck. :(
I'm sorry. I fixed literally hundreds of torturous bugs in it, but there was only so much I could do. You have any XLive entries in your application event log?
I tried forcing the connect manually in both AA and DS, but no dice. That was actually my first effort, as I was sure it was just a temporary thing. At least now when I open the GFWL installer, it says everything is fine. But DS still won't work except offline. Might just be one of those "wake up tomorrow and it works" things. I don't know, how do I check that? Thanks though.
Look in event viewer (in administrative tools, or run eventvwr from Run) for Application event log entries with a source of XLive. Usually they have some error code like 0x8000203b.
I have also only been able to get into offline mode today. This seems to potentially be a larger problem. Eh, what the hell:
I play through Steam and the GFWL stuff is mostly invisible to me. But when I tried to play yesterday, a few hours before your post LK, it wouldn't connect. Maybe it was a broader problem (haven't tried yet today).
THE APOCALYPSE IS NIGH. I thought I posted this earlier but it must have been a fever dream. Because boy howdy am I sick. Anyway, this is apparently a bigger issue, and it looks like MS is aware. Here's the MS thread. But weekend :(
Also, if you though Dark Souls absorbed your time and you're getting ready to start CK2 . . . . ahahahahahahahahahaha!
Your live client for windows install is just fine. Wait for them to fix whatever the production login deal is. Random guess: try logging onto the xbox.com website and see if it prompts you for a policy update or somesuch.
Hope you didn't lose your saves. I have no idea why GFWL still doesn't have a cloud (not that I would trust it), since it's such a pain in the ass to find and keep saves from any GFWL game.
Another thing to try is Control Panel -> User Accounts -> Manage your credentials -> Windows credentials -> Generic credentials. Delete the Windows Live:(*) ones. Reboot, try to log into ye game. None of this should bork your save game, but I make no promises.
I'll try that, thanks. Well the Arkham saves I don't really care about, and the DS ones are backed up. It's just annoying more than anything else.
That seems unlikely for Dark Souls since they aren't stored in some weird directory somewhere, they are stored in your documents, unencrypted.
Had the same issue as of last night. Gave up, went to bed, came back to it this evening. As mentioned in the Reddit thread, logging in on xbox.com and trying to set my region (which errored?) then resolved my GFWL woes. Then I started a Deprived character.
I did that, and it worked, although I didn't test it today beforehand. I'd done that last night with no results. In any case, it seems like I'm BACK.
Didn't see this before but I had the same problem and fixed it by swapping from google's dns to another dns server.
Hmmm.... My GFWL didn't work for couple days and then without me doing a thing it was right back up and working again yesterday. Go Microsoft.
In case you ever have to or want to change it: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/15037-dns-addressing-how-change-windows-7-a.html I tend to swap my DNS around semi-frequently if I see any performance issues with browsing or even Xbox performance. Here is a tool that will tell you what your fastest DNS servers are: http://code.google.com/p/namebench/
