Yeah, but I guess you could all boil it down to different people liking different things. I knew someone who sold her 3DS the week the ambassador games were announced, and then she bought a new one when Mario 3D land came out. I, for one, kill a lot of time with Balloon Fight.
I have probably played more of the Ambassador/VC games -- Zelda 1 and 2 and Gargoyle's Quest mostly -- than all of my 3DS games combined, but that's not a good thing. I did that because what the fuck else was there to do with it for months? I'm honestly amazed that you spend as much time as you do with the native stuff as you do. I fucking hate Miis, and I think the drawing app is useless. The only demo I've ever downloaded was Rhythm Thief. I get that VC games and native DS games are useful, but I already had previous iterations of the DS/DSi that could do those things. I didn't pay $250 so I could play Zelda 1 and Hotel Dusk again, no matter how much I like both of those things. I think you guys have overly low expectations for what you're getting out of nontrivial money. Speaking of Hotel Dusk, if I'm reading CSPariah 's description of 999 right, fans should give Hotel Dusk a look of they haven't. Nominally an adventure game, but at least as much of a visual novel. Really distinctive "sketch" art style, and amazing characters. A great protagonist in Kyle Hyde. I really need to import the PAL-only sequel before it becomes impossible to find.
I gave Hotel Dusk a try, and I wanted to like it, but there was something about the writing / dialogue that really turned me off. Was bummed out.
We obviously have very different outlooks on games, because: I hated Hotel Dusk with the passion of a thousand burning suns. I use it as an example of bad game design whenever I can. Why? Okay, here's just one thing-- you're in Chapter 1 and you search some hotel rooms. Some things in the rooms are interactive, other things aren't. You take the things that are, because it's that kind of game. Fine. Chapter 2 (or 3 or 5 or whatever) you get some puzzle to solve, and the thing you need to solve it is a previously non-interactive thing from a room you already searched. So every chapter you have to go back over all the ground you previously covered and check all the things that were just window dressing, because now they might have become useful things. Oh and at the end you get a choice, but you don't know that you've made the wrong choice until about 15 minutes of clicking through dialogue later. So by the time I reloaded and got to the choice again, I had forgotten which one I chose the first time, so I chose it again and I had to do it a third time before I got an ending that wasn't "you die and all your plans are for naught." So having Hotel Dusk on 3DS is definitely not a plus for me.
Well, my point is that having any DS games on the 3DS is not much of a plus. Because we could have done that without spending another $250 on a 3DS. It's a nice plus for people who didn't already have a DS, and given the option I'm glad I don't have to keep the DSi at hand, but it's not a compelling point to base a purchase on.
Virtue's Last Reward has the best save/restore system I've ever seen for replays, and takes all the tedium out of replaying a visual novel for endings in a straightforward, elegant, and story-driven way. The puzzle rooms are usually solid, and are small enough individually that the lousy movement controls aren't too problematic. The characters aren't as well-developed as in its prequel, 999, and a bit too fanservice-heavy, but the glorious, insane story makes up for it. Highly recommended. Edit: I like visual novel mysteries, so it's good to hear I'm not the only person who loathes Hotel Dusk's design choices. Great-looking character animations, sluggish story, lousy adventure gaming.
I'm holding out hope that Virtue's Last Reward will arrive from GameFly on Friday before I go out out town for 11 days. Fingers crossed, but it's not looking promising.
VideoGamesPlus is reprinting the Etrian Odyssey games in January for $30 a piece, or $75 as a combo. Seemed like a good buy to me. So, does anyone else here have any interest in some Kid Icarus multiplayer? At all?
I got Icarus in from GameFly and played it a little. Tried a multiplayer match, put about 90 minutes into the single player. I like it, but it's too repetitive and the controls make my hand cramp.
Thomson TG789vn, error code 006-0612. Kid Icarus is the only multiplayer game I have, so I can't confirm if other games do the same, but it sure looks like it. I can pick Together and Far Away, but trying to choose a game mode will lock the game up for several minutes and then it just gives me that useless error. It's apparently not uncommon, Google shows others having the exact same problem with this particular router - I've wasted a lot of time trying to configure it correctly, but still won't manage to connect. Never had an issue like this with my other devices, even my old DS works.
Nope. As it turns out, DMZ cannot be configured on this router, not even through telnet. Yeah, it kinda sucks.
Fun. Apparently it doesn't support any kind of third-party firmware, either. Thomson doesn't even provide users with firmware updates. So, I guess you're out of luck until you replace the router? Sorry! I'm using some TP-Link POS I got on sale for $20 and stuck DD-WRT on, and it works; you might consider a similar path.
It was provided by my ISP and I've never had a great reason to replace it, since it works for everything else.
That's interesting. I LOVE rhythm games and Rhythm Thief was the worst rhythm game I've ever played. I really love my 3ds though. I like that you can take pictures on it (handy for when I forget my camera) and I think it has really good games so far. Despite already owning the original Devil Survivor, I've put hundreds of hours into Devil Survivor: Overclocked. It's a major improvement on the original. I also really love Theatrythm, and Denpa Men and Harvest Moon: A new Beginning were fun too. I also think the 3ds is a heck of a lot more durable than the other DS systems. Both my DS Phat and Lite broke their hinges (with only the Phat being still playable, despite the 'injury' being caused by someone dropping it, the lite suddenly breaking for no reason at all...) while a friend of mine dropped my 3DS on solid ground and it's totally fine. The DS still has better games, but the 3DS is still new so I look forward to what may come in the future. I just really wish it didn't have region locking.
I've dropped both my DS and 3DS multiple times with no ill effects, but I think I was one of the lucky ones who got working hinges on my DS. The 3DS feels sturdier overall but also lighter. I don't own too many games for it at the moment, but I thought the Epic Mickey demo was incredibly mediocre. The intro was much too long to sum up "Girlfriend gone! Find her!" and the gameplay was boring. Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask, though, is excellent. A great addition to the series. Ocarina of Time 3D is also great, and Link's Awakening in the eShop is definitely worth it. I also could never get WiFi working on my DS (unsupported encryption), but it works perfectly on my 3DS, which is nice. It doesn't work for backwards-compatible DS games, so no multiplayer Pokemon for me, but it's still an improvement.
Generation V games (and HGSS) support WPA2, IIRC; if you're playing them on the 3DS or a DSi, you should be okay. Try it!
I'm still undecided if I'm interested in getting B/W and their sequels or if I'm just going to wait patiently for 3DS pokeymans, but I didn't know about HG/SS. Thanks!
Speaking of 3DS pogeymanz: after the Dream Radar with B2/W2, I dread Game Freak's DLC. This is only the beginning. Rapidash armor. It will happen.
So, uh. Apparently Denpa Men 2 localization was confirmed some time ago. Why has no one told me this?
I'm playing Ghost Recon, and it's pretty swell. The scenario is utter trite : a devious politician wants to become president in order to give Mother Russia its true power back and so he sends his pawns to wreak shit in Somewheristan. He's a very bad guy, you know, so Team America comes and kicks ass. It sounds like shit, and it looks pretty lame too, but it's a T-RPG produced by Julian Gollop and the gameplay is really good with quite a lot of variations in objectives and means to reach them so far. A little bit on the easy side, but each of your commando has a personality and tricks of his own, and the levels are really well designed, somewhere between Fire Emblem and X-Com. The interface is great, and the characters are strangely likeable, especially Banshee the almost invisible scout who can one shot enemies while remaining hidden. It could have been a great cyberpunk (their weapons are very futuristic) or even fantasy title, but unfortunately Ubi has that Tom Clancy licence they got to use somehow. Anyway the game should be dirt cheap by now, and it's very well worth your time.
So, uh. Project X Zone is getting localized. I'm not sure how I feel about this. On the one hand, it's one of the swarm of Japan-only 3DS RPGs, so that bodes well. On the other, it's apparently not very good? Hmm. Also, went into the eShop to buy Tokyo Crash Mobs and instead was informed that AN ERROR HAS OCCURRED. Gee, thanks. Nintendo!
Huh. I was thinking of picking this game up at some point. Would you say that it's best played with a walkthrough, to reduce the obnoxiousness of the backtracking?
New titles from the Nintendo Direct. Zelda looks cool; I'm doubtful about Yoshi's Island, largely because nothing since the SNES has demonstrated that they "get" the original. But we'll see, I guess. Also, Mario & Luigi hits on August 11.
Has anyone played the new Castlevania 3DS game? Is it any good? I'm a sucker for them on the handhelds (yes, I've played all of the GBA and DS versions to the end), and am interested in this latest one!
The Giant Bomb Quick Look made it look not very good -- very sluggish, tiny viewable area, combat that doesn't at all work with the 3DS size or style... it looked like a pass to me.
If you've already got a 3DS there was a demo for it in the eshop last time I checked. New Zelda looks excellent. It's good to see a healthy dose of creativity put into the handheld games.
Does anyone know of a way to transfer purchases / save games between 3DSes? I could probably stretch some kind of justification for getting my fiancee one of the Animal Crossing 3DS XLs if I could transfer the preinstalled Mario Kart 7 from her current one.
http://www.nintendo.com/consumer/sy...ansfer games&submenu=ctr-ht-software-transfer This is something I really wish they would improve, and go to an account based system, vs. being tied to hardware.
Whoops, I need to learn to google first, then post. That looks like that might do what i want. Now I just get to be annoyed at importing a circle pad pro for Monster Hunter for nearly twice what Nintendo's selling them for now.
So Etrian Odyssey 4 is only for 3ds? Damnit. I don't know if there is enough on the system for me to buy it, but I like the EO games....Luckily, I am only just starting 3, so maybe that will be enough to satisfy me. Kid Icarus sounds fantastic, but my hand cramps up playing action games on the DS already...not sure I want a game that is KNOWN to cause that.
Man, the 3DS is probably the most interesting console platform out there at the current point in time. Right now, you've got Super Mario 3D Land, Kid Icarus, Fire Emblem, EO4, Devil Survivor Overclocked, Soul Hackers, Revelaitons, Luigi's Mansion, Monster Hunter - all kinds of things. I just picked a handful there; you can easily find more to fit your tastes. Then there's a ton coming up later this year- SMTIV, Pokémon, Mario & Luigi, Zelda, etc. This isn't even getting into any of the downloadable stuff. If you like JRPGs, this is the new JRPG Machine. Plenty of more niche titles that would be too expensive to do on the current consoles, for the numbers they'd sell, plus the Nintendo standards. (well, and Kid Icarus, which is a weird, wonderful, experimental thing that doesn't bear any resemblance to the NES game beyond mining it for jokes) (no, really, buy Kid Icarus) (like, everyone, right now)
Ok ok....but I have to say I really like my XL for my DS....is there any reason not to get the XL for the 3ds as well? I just like the bigger screen.
The original model has a really cool telescoping metal stylus. I mean, seriously. It's the Cadillac of shitty $5 styli. That is the entirety of what it has over the XL.
The only reason would be if you intend to play a lot of DS games on it, as apparently the regular 3DS does a passable job filling its screen space and the XL has to use a 1:1 minimized screen if you want to avoid stretching. Me, I'm waiting til Shin Megami Tensei 4 comes out, and then I'll have that, Soul Hackers, and EO4 to play. I don't plan on giving up my DS lite for those games, though.
