I like that protag-kun is really suspicious of everything even though nothing warrants it. It accurately portrays how the player feels. It's also nice that he's not as bland as Naegi.

Haha, good point about Hinata's paranoia mirroring the player's because of our experiences with DR1! I kind of miss Naegi's laidbackness, though it'll be interesting to see what this protagonist gets up to with his kind of personality. It almost feels like we're playing a hot-headed version of Kirigiri? Or maybe I'm stretching that parallel because we're SHSL ???. In any case, I feel like Hinata will be more fun to watch together with Naegito because so far their personalities play off each other very well.

I really liked the way orenronen did things with the first LP; it seemed to flow just fine to me.

I adore Naegi, I mean Nagito so far. He seems so pleasant and easygoing, but there's this undertone of off-ness about him that's exacerbated by all the Naegi connections. We can see all the similarities to Naegi in the design and demeanour (with one obvious reversal - optimism vs pessimism), that reaction to the desert island thing, and most obviously the anagram name, but that's tempered by the different height and birth date and hair. I think the purpose is to make us feel very ambivalent and uneasy about this Nagito; my initial response was like "Naegi! Oh, Naegi-bro! Thank god for a nice, familiar face amongst all this chaos! COME HERE NAEGI-BRO LET ME HUG YOU!" but then you also get the feeling of "Crap. What's wrong with this Nagito dude? Is he really Naegi? Is he just donning a really crappy disguise? Did he get a growth spurt? Is somebody trying to mock the idea of "hope" by impersonating him? What's with the Maizono parellels?"
The feeling of ambivalence, this dissonance between hope (that he's the Naegi we know and love) and despair (why is he here, is he going to die, is he even Naegi, why is he so similar to Naegi, is this a conspiracy) makes this the most interesting character to me so far. I think it's quite stupid to simply dismiss this as "just" a red herring, just because it's "obviously Naegi". The developers are obviously creating this incredibly suspicious character to fuck with our expectations, but do you think that's seriously all there is to it? That they'll just have a character that's so similar to Naegi but NOT Naegi, and it won't have a deeper significance to the story, or explained in story terms? I think that's underestimating the ability of Dangan Ronpa's writer, honestly.

As for the most recent update, Nagito actually stood out the most to me. The rest are pretty bog-standard character archetypes (looking forward to seeing them develop though!), while Nagito is coming across as vaguely creeptastic and passive-aggressive. I find it absolutely fascinating.

Yeah, I liked the translation of the first LP too, but I hear that DR2's character voices are somewhat harder to translate colloquially for a non-native English speaker, so it makes sense that orenronen would do it. I had some concerns about Fedule's editing process, but I'm not sure if the thread is the place for something like this (I think slowbeef said we can't comment on the quality of the translation there?), so I decided to email you directly about them.

My one major concern is this:

"Where I invent lines entirely, they will be great."

I wholeheartedly approve of trying to make the script flow better for an English-speaking audience, and I agree that the editor needs to take some liberties. However, I cannot see how making lines up completely out of thin air helps to accomplish that goal, no matter how "great" the editor thinks they may be.

For example, this particular change Fedule made bothers me immensely.

"This is me being ballsy again. Hinata doesn't originally make any reference to the fallacy of testing for superior luck by holding a lottery, and remarks only that the entire idea of SHSL Good Luck is a mystery. But I thought it'd be nice to have the dialogue focus on something other than repeatedly hitting you over the head with the suggestion that Nagito is Naegi for a line or two. Plus, said fallacy is exactly the kind of thing that a perceptive-but-negative person like Hinata would immediately notice, because it's a perfectly valid grounds to complain!"

Personally, as someone who has edited professionally before, I think this is stepping across the boundaries of an editor into re-writing the story and characterization. Note that the main justification he gives is his personal dislike of the way the story is going: "it'd be nice to have the dialogue focus on something [else]". The secondary justification is based on his personal interpretation of Hinata's character; correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't he get the chapters as you translate them, so he's going in this pretty much blind? How would he have a better handle on Hinata's character than the readers?

Adding that line makes Hinata seems more aware, logical, and incisive in his thinking compared how he would seem without it. It also reflects Fedule's personal opinion on the lottery issue as well as his cultural upbringing and rational way of thinking, instead of Hinata's. I think it's a bad sign when the editor's personality overrides the character's.

This addition not only significantly changes our perception of the character, it may also prove to be a red herring for people who are combing every little detail of the text for clues, as somebody else mentioned in the thread. The fact that Hinata analyzes the lottery process, even slightly, makes it seem like it's going to be relevant later on in the story.

In short, I suggest that Fedule should try to avoid making up little things like that from scratch just because he thinks it'll improve "the story itself", instead of improving "the flow and readability of the story". There's a huge difference between the two. From what I've seen so far, Dangan Ronpa 2 has an incredibly well-written story; an editor should try to present it on its own terms, instead of trying to "improve" it.

I'm sorry if this comes across as arrogant; I've been loving the LP so far, and I do think both of you are doing an amazing job at translating and editing, and I'm so grateful for that. As somebody who's done both, I really enjoy reading the notes both of you type up as well. I'm just worried that readers like me might be confused or might not get the full experience of this great game because of unnecessary additions by the editor. An editor shouldn't be afraid to take liberties, yes, but only if the liberties actually serve their purpose - to make the story read better to an English-speaking audience, NOT to make whatever the editor considers "a better story", and I'm concerned that Fedule seems to be leaning slightly towards the latter.

Also, a note on the ellipses war that you two seem to be having: I think that ellipses do have their place, especially in a visual novel format where they're essential to indicate pauses or lulls in speech. In a film, we'd just have the actors pause to, you know, indicate a pause, but we don't have that luxury in visual novels. On the other hand, excessive ellipses do tend to annoy people. My suggestion is that instead of getting rid of ellipses completely, why not just universally shorten them to "..." instead of retaining the "..........." that seems to bother people so much? Just a suggestion.

Anyway, I just want to congratulate you both on a great LP. I do hope that you'll take my comments into consideration, and deeply apologize if I've offended you with my remarks.

Once again, thank you so much for putting so much effort into translating this amazing game for us English-speakers.

I didn't get a response though. Hope he's at least taken my opinions into account though. And again, like I said, I trust his judgment and that he'll rein Fedule in whenever necessary.

Yesss, he's got this weird unsettling feeling surrounding him and I am absolutely loving it. I like the other characters well enough so far, but Nagito is in a strange place because he seems way too normal to be there right now and he has the weird similarities to Naegi, including sharing his VA. Other than him and Hinata*, everyone has bizarre personality quirks and over-the-top ways of showing their personalities, so I'm really curious as to how he'll behave as the story continues on. He's a weird sweetheart right now; I'm not sure if I want him to actually be that way or for it to be a ruse of some sort...

* And fat Togami, I guess? But I'm just ignoring him right now because I have no idea what's up with him. ._.

As for the translation, your concerns are basically the exact same as mine! The fact that he's going in blind and feels like he should randomly add things to "improve" the existing lines... well, it's more than a bit concerning.

There was also some concern raised when Fuyuhiko was introduced; according to some people that know Japanese/have played the game, the word choice in the very first line he says was unnecessary, because it's not what he was originally saying and it was made offensive for no reason.

I'm definitely okay with orenronen's translations! And if Fedule knew Japanese himself/had played the game before, I'd probably be more okay with things as they are, but--

Well, here's a good example of the way I feel about this: I'm currently playing a game in Japanese, but with the English translation. I am not anywhere near fluent in Japanese, but I know enough to know when a sentence is translated in a really strange way/words are left out/etc. Sometimes I understand why they changed things (especially when lip syncing needs to be taken into account), but other times I'm left wondering why they did what they did. For example, at the very beginning of the game, the character said "wah" in Japanese, but for some reason in English they had him talking about how cool the place he walked into was. Why not just change it to "whoa" if you don't want "wah"? What's the point of adding all of that extra stuff?

And ultimately that's what I'm getting from some of Fedule's notes--that he's adding/taking away things for no real reason other than he likes it better, potentially at the cost of characterization or information. It makes me wish I were fluent in Japanese so I could play the game myself, haha. But I do trust orenronen to not let him get away with anything too bad, so at least there's that! I do hope he read your e-mail, though, because you brought up very good points (and I agree with everything you said).

Yeah, and the fact that his name is an anagram of Naegi Makoto da means that all the similarities aren't just the devs trying to fuck with us, there HAS to be an in-universe reason for why he is the way he is. There is no way that is a coincidence.

He actually reminds me of Garry from Ib a little, though that might just be the similar fashion/colour scheme?

And I do hope that he's genuinely a weird sweetheart, though I look forward to how they're going to develop him from now on <3

I saw your posts in that thread! I did a double take because you had your old avatar (TF2?).

Regarding the translation, aside from agreeing with both of you, I find that I personally like literal translation more. I like learning Japanese culture and obscure references. I understand it's not everyone's thing; but sometimes localisation just makes me wish I can look up what they had change. E.g. in phoenix wright, Maya really likes burgers, right? I found out later that she liked ramen in the original, which made a lot more sense to me.

I like the nonsensical way Junko is portrayed, it fits her so well. It's interesting that we know more about Junko and can parse her crazy ramblings better than the protagonist.

Also the thing that gets me about "localization" is localized to WHERE? It strikes me as really ethnocentric that people just assume that we need to swap in cultural references and tailor the script to whatever random English-speaking country when really, what about those of us who... *shockgasp* AREN'T native English speakers? And don't mind learning more about Japanese culture? If I wanted to see something based around American or British or Australian culture, I'd watch a show or read a book done natively in those countries, which I, in fact, DO. Orenronen isn't a native English speaker himself, you know?

Teruteru better not stick around until the end! I'm totally okay with him being one of the first to go, as long as one of my current faves doesn't get hurt/killed in order for that to happen. (And by "current faves", I mostly mean Nagito, who I am even more fond of now despite nothing new happening with him. I just like seeing him around. C:)

I kind of get Hagakure vibes from Souda, too, but I actually remember that Souda exists, so I like him better. U: I also think he seems more useful, as far as his skill goes (maybe he'll be able to build something if he lasts long enough? Then again, with the way he's panicking right now...).

"BULLETS CAN'T PIERCE SPIRIT" is indeed an excellent line; I hope Nidai sticks around for a while, if only so he can yell some more.

I'm kind of curious about what collecting the Monobear things will do (if anything)... and I did not need to see Monobear in a bikini first thing in the morning. :|

I bought Dangan Ronpa this weekend! I wasn't sure if I wanted to because I'm definitely not fluent in Japanese, but it was decently priced and I wanted to hear all of the voice acting. Also, I just need to get more use out of my poor neglected PSP. I figure I can just use the LP if I need help remembering what's happening. (I was really, really tempted by DR2, but it was less decently priced and with my luck I'd spoil something for myself and have no idea what's going on...)

I also tried to buy a keychain of my favourite DR2 character, but they were all sold out. :( I'll definitely be prepared if they restock, though! (By the way, if anyone here is interested in DR/DR2 merchandise, this site has a decent amount of stuff! A lot of it is out of stock; depending on what you're trying to get, you might be able to find something that isn't. Also, I didn't notice any spoilers, but if you search for "Dangan Ronpa" you'll get stuff from both games; if you're trying to avoid knowing anything about DR2 you might want to avoid looking.)

All those attempts at moe-moe dojikko and tsundere fanservice are starting to annoy me. Have to remember that it's still early in the game though. Also, LOL at Naegitwo playing at being SHSL Hope. And WTF Togami. Really liking him so much more than in DR1, man, the character development of a full game has really paid off, huh? Although (1) he deliberately tried to become fat? It was totally to get Fukawa/Syo off his back, wasn't it? and (2) He's totally going to die soon, isn't he. Goddamnit. One of the characters I'm liking better in DR2 and he's totally going to bite it.

I hope the whole working together thing sticks for a while, but since Monobear wouldn't like that, I doubt it will. :( And I'm with you on the screaming thing--I was expecting it to be something more than "ohh look at this girl, she somehow fell and now you can see her panties". What purpose does that serve... other than showing that Tsumiki is a huge klutz, I guess.

And yeah, I did! ...did I somehow get one of the last ones? This was the one I bought; is that the one you were looking at? It looks like the normal version is out of stock, but the Best version should still be there!

My guess would be that it was just to show off her clumsiness/underwear; if someone did set a trap for her, I don't think it would be Hiyoko, since she made the comment about Tsumiki potentially falling around on purpose. Everyone seemed pretty mystified as to how she managed it, though, so it was most likely just Tsumiki being herself. ...I hope it's not a recurring thing.

Other than Kirigiri in the fake end (which I didn't realize was a fake end until after), I wasn't so much surprised at who died, but who managed to survive. I wouldn't have bet on Aoi or Hagakure making it that far at all. Or Togami, really, given his personality. But with the exception of Naegi (which I still doubted at times), I expected all of the characters to be expendable. Honestly, my initial thought was that only Naegi and Kirigiri would make it to the end. Though I am happy I was wrong!

My general reactions were mostly "sadfacing" or "Nooo, why couldn't it have been Hagakure?!"
Except Celes and real!Junko, I really didn't feel too bad about them.

So, Togami and Gundam won! Which was probably an obvious outcome once they both managed to accumulate over 100 votes. It'll be interesting to see how Togami matches up to the other Togami in a one-on-one conversation, especially with his apparent happiness over receiving a nickname like "Mr. Porkfeet". (That's kind of weird, Togami.)

I thought Nagito's little friendship speech was cute. And it seems to have helped Hinata, which is good! (...If it lasts.)

Also, since Hiyoko keeps making fun of Souda the way she is, I'm just going to assume he's surviving longer than her--possibly even until the very end. Just because. :U

I'm mainly shipping Ishimaru/Oowada and Kirigiri/Naegi/Mukuro as an OT3 and now I'm sad that neither of my shippings will ever come true in the main storyline... (In other words, I'm in despair! Dangan Ronpa has left me in despair!)

Actually, this is the first in a long time that I've been having shipping feels about anything since Umineko! (I still ship Lucifer/Battler)

Also Togami is an asshat and deserves Genocider Syo as his waifu. They're perfect for each other.

I'm also really sad that in the photos showing their school life from before DR1, Ishimaru and Oowada were never shown together, implying that they never got to the manly bonding stage of their relationship. :(

A pity Kirigi didn't have time to tell Hairbanana Gangleader guy to toss the exploding Monobear at the steel, though. Maybe that would have compromised the structure so they could get out.

Too bad there's no Super High School Level chemist, really. Provided there's a lab, explosives aren't that hard to make...

No one's really tripped any classic flags yet. I'm mostly wondering how the knife got into Naegi's room... the sword was unsheated, which seems to indicate too many weapons. They made such a deal of the sword staining hands, but it was Sayaka who wanted him to put it in there, getting him to touch potential weapons in the case. If she was playing a long game to implicate him, which... well... maybe something went wrong and the killee became the killer? That would kind of make her a manipulative bitch, granted. I just don't trust fictional people these days.

And then I read on a bit and it says blow to wrist'. That indicates the attacker was strong, but if the attacker went for the wrist specifically to stop her from stabbing... Well, she has the best motive of anyone to get out fast, she was so scared of being forgotten and losing her group.
