Speaking of DR2, how is everyone feeling about Fedule's changes to the script? I'm not too sure how I feel about it, myself. For the most part he doesn't seem to be changing too much, but it's hard to tell without knowing what everything was originally... and I've heard a few complaints about it elsewhere. I really liked the way orenronen did things with the first LP; it seemed to flow just fine to me.
Me too! Let me repost this thing I said on another forum:
Yeah, I liked the translation of the first LP too, but I hear that DR2's character voices are somewhat harder to translate colloquially for a non-native English speaker, so it makes sense that orenronen would do it. I HAVE been a little concerned about Fedule's editing though, after reading his editing notes.
Let me cross-post a discussion I had about it on another forum:
And I actually sent an email about it to orenronen himself:
I didn't get a response though. Hope he's at least taken my opinions into account though. And again, like I said, I trust his judgment and that he'll rein Fedule in whenever necessary.
As for the translation, your concerns are basically the exact same as mine! The fact that he's going in blind and feels like he should randomly add things to "improve" the existing lines... well, it's more than a bit concerning.
I'm definitely okay with orenronen's translations! And if Fedule knew Japanese himself/had played the game before, I'd probably be more okay with things as they are, but--
Well, here's a good example of the way I feel about this: I'm currently playing a game in Japanese, but with the English translation. I am not anywhere near fluent in Japanese, but I know enough to know when a sentence is translated in a really strange way/words are left out/etc. Sometimes I understand why they changed things (especially when lip syncing needs to be taken into account), but other times I'm left wondering why they did what they did. For example, at the very beginning of the game, the character said "wah" in Japanese, but for some reason in English they had him talking about how cool the place he walked into was. Why not just change it to "whoa" if you don't want "wah"? What's the point of adding all of that extra stuff?
And ultimately that's what I'm getting from some of Fedule's notes--that he's adding/taking away things for no real reason other than he likes it better, potentially at the cost of characterization or information. It makes me wish I were fluent in Japanese so I could play the game myself, haha. But I do trust orenronen to not let him get away with anything too bad, so at least there's that! I do hope he read your e-mail, though, because you brought up very good points (and I agree with everything you said).
edit: why is my whole post hiding in a spoiler... aha! fixed it! no idea how that happened.
I love how upset the goons are getting at the mere mention of any vaguely animu term in their animu game about teenagers murdering eachother.
Goons get their stallones ramboed over nothing, just saying.
SA is a bunch of elitist snobs. What else is new? I'm personally skimming and/or skipping the discussion to avoid all the stupidity that's going down in there.
I saw your posts in that thread! I did a double take because you had your old avatar (TF2?).
Regarding the translation, aside from agreeing with both of you, I find that I personally like literal translation more. I like learning Japanese culture and obscure references. I understand it's not everyone's thing; but sometimes localisation just makes me wish I can look up what they had change. E.g. in phoenix wright, Maya really likes burgers, right? I found out later that she liked ramen in the original, which made a lot more sense to me.
Wait, who are you on SA, Kringlorr?
Oh, and let me cross-post one of my rants on "localisation"...
My name's Kringlorr on SA with a McNinja avatar. Also new DR2 updateeeee
New DR2 update YAAAAYYYYYYYYYY
I bought Dangan Ronpa this weekend! I wasn't sure if I wanted to because I'm definitely not fluent in Japanese, but it was decently priced and I wanted to hear all of the voice acting. Also, I just need to get more use out of my poor neglected PSP. I figure I can just use the LP if I need help remembering what's happening. (I was really, really tempted by DR2, but it was less decently priced and with my luck I'd spoil something for myself and have no idea what's going on...)
I also tried to buy a keychain of my favourite DR2 character, but they were all sold out. :( I'll definitely be prepared if they restock, though! (By the way, if anyone here is interested in DR/DR2 merchandise, this site has a decent amount of stuff! A lot of it is out of stock; depending on what you're trying to get, you might be able to find something that isn't. Also, I didn't notice any spoilers, but if you search for "Dangan Ronpa" you'll get stuff from both games; if you're trying to avoid knowing anything about DR2 you might want to avoid looking.)
Agree with everything you said. As for Souda's skill,
Bec: did you order it through play-asia? I remember seeing it on there for uhh $40? or something but it's out of stock now! sadface.
And yeah, I did! ...did I somehow get one of the last ones? This was the one I bought; is that the one you were looking at? It looks like the normal version is out of stock, but the Best version should still be there!
So..many spoilers. *__* I wish I had found out about this earlier, so I wouldn't be so far behind.
But, I finally finished the first game, so I'm on my way!
Hey Anabanana, does that avatar link have stuff from both games or just the first one?
Who were your favourites in the first game? o:
(Also, I'm not Anabanana (obviously :P), but I only saw characters from the first game in there!)
Naegi, Kirigiri, Aoi, Sakura, Ishimaru, Chihiro, and Mondo...and I liked most of the cast, overall. Yamada and Hagakure were my least favorites, but even they were still entertaining.
And I both love and hate Monobear. >3<
I like to imagine that anyone who creates a BL/Yaoi LP thread is actually Fukawa somehow.
So, I finished reading the LP of DR 1 and DR If.
I know that feel bro ;_____;
Really?! I never cared too much for the Stakes myself. I ship maaaaaybe Mammon/Ange, and that's it. Haha.
(Umineko should probably should warrant its own thread, but) really the only hint of LuciBato as a legitimate pairing at all is in the extra TIPS, Stakes' Valentines Day, and I thought the pairing was pretty cute there. (Also, possibly their partner ending at Ougon, though they seemed a good deal more platonic there.) Keep in mind, though, my standards for shipping are about the same level of standards that the Bechdel Test has...
I'll just pop in and say that due to Ana, soundly's avatar and, I think it was Kaneda?... talking about this VN I am reading the LP now. I am midway through Chapter 1 and I'd just like to ask WHY. Why am I doing this to myself?
I know... ;________________;
You should start one <_< >_> I think we have quite a few Umineko fans here :D
Ohohoh, you don't know just how huge of a ride you're getting into. <3
Just pray that the paywall doesn't strike before you finish reading it.
YESSSS JOIN USSSSSS MWAHAHAHA
But, DK! It's a corn cob, not a banana!
Oh, and got any idea who the murderer is at this point? xD
The forum you're reading it on randomly puts up a paywall, meaning that you need to be a member in order to read the posts. A membership on that forum costs $10.00 and you need to have a credit card.
If it pulls that on me I am TVtroping. I want my money to myself.
