I just noticed something. In DR IF, Junko pretends to be a student hacker named Besshiki Madarai. I'm guessing he's related to the Madarai in Zero (I forget his first name, but it was something else). Possibly, Besshiki was killed in the incident and that's why the other Madarai guy is after Junko.
I know IF was written by someone else, but from what I understand, it was in collaboration with the game creators right?

Hah! I knew that that name sounded familiar and that I'd read it in a DR-related work, but I couldn't recall at all where I'd heard it. Yeah, that's definitely possible.

Uh, IF was presented as a bonus with DR 2, so yes, it's an official AU story, as contradictory as that sounds. Not sure if the game writer actually collaborated with him on it though.

I'm still like, 98% sure that this is the same Togami from before, but just to throw another theory out there: it could be that this takes place much later than the last game, and this is actually the original Togami's son. They look alike because anime genetics, and Togami seems full enough of himself to give his child the exact same name as him. Probably not the case, but might as well cover all the bases.

Yeah, if it's not Togami himself then it's some kind of relative. I'm not sure about the timeline being waaaaaay after DR1, where the DR1 students have presumably reconstructed the world, saved it from the apocalypse, and rebuilt Hope Peak's Academy and the Togami Conglomerate... If that's the case, (1) it seems improbable that the world would return exactly to the way it was before the apocalypse, and (2) why would Nagito be the only one going "Waaait you are bringing us to a desert island are you trying to make us kill each other?!" If FaTogami is Togami's son, he would at least know about the DR1 events, right? There'd be no reason to hide it. It might even be very well known, given that it was a reality TV show and all. The fact that no one at all references DR 1 events is really suspicious if you think that it's a far future. Also (3) Fatogami's characterization seems like it developed out of DR 1 Endgame Togami's characterization.

I still want to know what year this group is supposedly from. All of the students in Hope's Peak Academy during DR1 got killed, except for Naegi's year, right? I really don't think this is a prequel, mostly because of Komaeda Nagito (seriously the creators are just MOCKING us with that anagram name) and FaTogami's existence, really. There's just something so off about this entire setting AAAGHHH.

Ah well, won't beat myself up over it until we get more details.

As it stands, though, I don't know what to make of this. Fatogami being a relative runs into the timing issue. The entire conglomerate was wiped out, so he could only be Togami's son, and then why is that guy not aware of anything that happened? Erased memories? When is this class from? Junko must have HATED Ishi. Going off the meter she thinks bringing despair is doing the world a favour his is by far the cleanest, quickest death by execution they drafted. She probably would have had something similar in the works for Naegi even if they of course didn't draft the protagonist's potential execution. My reasoning being both of them are the type to not lose heart and try with... variant success... to bring hope to others.

Disregarding the whole video game theory, if this is really happening in real life... DR0 mentions a prep school, doesn't it? SHSL wannabes/rejects? Could it be that these are students from the prep school, around Naegi's year, who were somehow spared the most despairing incident? And then they got memory-wiped a la the DR1 students. But why would anybody want these students to believe that the apocalypse never happened, that the world is functioning as normal? To spare them despair? To build a new race of superior human beings on the island without getting distracted by the fate of the world outside? But knowing that the rest of the world has gone to hell would be more effective at keeping them on the island, wouldn't it? Though they didn't seem to protest too much when Usami was still running things.

The memory-wipe theory also runs into the issue of hamsters. I can believe that high school students can pass a few years without significant changes in their appearances. But I assume hamsters have much shorter lifespans and thus die quicker? Short of cryogenic shenanigans I can't imagine Gundam not noticing that his Four Lords of Darkness have suddenly become significantly older.

I think that if Junko actually did execute Ishi in the game, the bit about his grandfather being a disgraced prime minister would have probably been put into the game and not just thrown in the manga.

Really, it's quite clear that the Danganronpa manga seems to be more of a supplement to the game than something actually standalone. It just shows parts that Naegi wasn't able to witness, mainly:
-It shows the state of minds of Leon, Mondo (though this was pretty explicitly shown in the game as well), and Celes before they kill.
-It makes explicit what exactly was going on in Sayaka's mind before her murder attempt: namely, that she seemed to genuinely like Naegi, but snapped hard after seeing that video.
-It shows Leon's perspective up until his death after he ends up killing Sayaka.
-It shows Chihiro finding the laptop and creating Alter Ego.
-It shows the sauna scene with Ishimaru and Oowada. (So moe~)

While it's pretty good fanservice for those who played through the game, it's clearly not a complete narrative on its own.

Yeah, I don't really think it's that far ahead from the last game. But I figure if I make a ton of wild guesses, at least one of them might turn out to be right! xD I thought I had some pretty good theories for the first game and they were totally wrong, so I don't even know what to expect anymore.

But while we're at it: I think Hinata might have been from the prep school. It would explain why he admired Hope's Peak so much, and why he can't remember his talent: because he doesn't have one. Not so sure about the rest of the students, though. People have pointed out that some of them look like mash ups of the previous characters, but I don't see that in all of them (and it could be just because of the artist's style).

I'm kinda hoping it's not some virtual reality thing, personally.

And no, hamsters don't live for very long at all. I think the average is a hundred days or something.

Well, that rules out memory shenanigans, or at least the specific memory trick that was pulled on the DR1 students. I can't imagine Gundam not realizing that his hamsters have been replaced... unless of course he's totally faking his ability. Which is unlikely, to be sure - I imagine it takes a lot of animal handling skill to hold up a hamster on a floating scarf like that.

I think Zana might have something with Hinata being from the reserve course. As for whether it's a simulation in a computer or not would depend maybe on how well you have to simulate a hamster to fool Gundam. Unless the hamsters have tiny helmets on, too.

And so it came to pass that the thread pondered hamsters.

*ahem* As for the mash up, I think it's like Nidai seems a bit like... Isihida, really. Hot-blooded, insanely dedicated, but not about rules, about another area. Got a bit of Sakura-I-Will-Protect-You in him as well. Hiyoko is a bit like a more obviously nasty Celes, Cook is like Yamada only worse, Nanami has a bit of Chihiro with cloud couckoolander syndrome...

Agree with the Hinata is a SHSL reserve theory.

As for the mash up, I can believe that the similarities are merely due to artist style and recycling of anime character tropes... if not for the fact that we have freaking Komaeda Naegi and Togami Byakuya. If we already have two characters with explicit links to DR1 characters, that opens up the possibility that the other students are somehow related as well, though maybe not all of them.

Nanami is actually almost like a mix of Yamada and Chihiro, actually - she's like Yamada in that she likes games, but she's less in-your-face about it. She's actually kinda like an exaggerated version of me - the whole conversation makes her tired thing and the spacing out on people while playing games is so totally me I was all like "I know that feel sis". I can tooootally relate to her.

Not necessarily. It could be that this group hasn't lost as many memories as the previous cast, though that does bring in the question about if they were actually Hope Peak students or not. Or it could just be working on willing suspension of disbelief. After all, the game isn't what I'd call realistic in terms of plot and the hamsters' lifespans may not even be taken into account.

If the game does go the VR route, though, now I really hope they do hook the hamsters up too. That seems like something the game would do.

A bit of an idea. Actually, several ideas, which I'll jot down below.

-The game could take place in an alternate dimension from DR If, where Mukuro fails to win and everyone gets re-memory-wiped and sent back to the beginning, except with Mukuro as one of the original 15 instead of Mukuro-as-Junko.
-The game could be a dating sim or a dating sim component.
-The game could take place on Rokkenjima an island with a nice mansion, and then murders start to happen.
-The game could have Ishimaru as a protagonist. (If we go with the dating sim idea as well, obviously he'll have Mondo, Celes, Naegi, and maybe Chihiro and Mukuro as love interests.)
-The came would have lots and lots of troll faces, a la Ryukishi07.
-The game could be a fair-game Golden Age mystery, that obeys Knox and Dine.
-The game could be another what-if of DR1, where Leon actually survives his execution, and suffers from many contusions and broken bones after the incident for the rest of the game.
-The game could be a parody?

I honestly have no idea at this point.

If Asahina is a SHSL Swimmer for being amazing enough to beat the other swimmers to become the best swimmer, then Togami obviously had to be amazing enough to beat the other heirs to become the "best" heir. And those who watch a lot of Asian dramas probably know what that means......

Anyway, I really felt for him because I really really hated being told that I'm so lucky to be "born smart" every time I become the top student, because HAHAHA WHAT HARD WORK AS IF I NEEDED TO SPEND THE TIME THAT I COULD HAVE USED TO HANG OUT WITH FRIENDS TO DO REVISION TO GET GOOD GRADES when I have "smart" parents HAHAHA RIGHT???

Actually, him being one of my favourites is why I'm not pleased he's in DR2. The whole "keeping character development from DR1 but not remembering anything" doesn't make sense*, he still seems "off" to me, and I suspect he's just going to die soon. I'd rather he live and accomplish things with the people he got to know in the first game, so I'm pretending it's not really him. (Let me live in denial...) I mean, really, he was on TV and the heir to a huge corporation, right? So you could get someone pretending to be him... but then they wouldn't have the same voice unless they were really talented. ...then again, it is SHSL stuff and this game is weird sometimes.

* Okay, we don't know everything (or really much of anything) about the memory removal stuff and he could be pretending (though I have no idea what purpose that would serve). But it still bothers me.

Yeah, that's another issue with it. I guess it'd depend on where the person saw Togami--if they watched the school thing, they'd probably use his personality from near the end of that. ...but then why would they be impersonating him anyway? It's not like anyone knows what's going on off of the island (presumably because their memory has been wiped like the DR1 students), so unless he's just been impersonating him for no reason before all of this it's still weird. It's just the only semi-possible thing I can think of if I want to keep thinking it's not really Togami. U:

I guess if the "impersonator" part mostly lies in appearance/voice but not acting it might work? But he's not doing a stellar job with the appearance in that case (though it would explain the sudden food obsession, if it's the real person's gluttony). Actually, Nagito said he looked everyone up, and he didn't comment on Togami looking any different... unless he didn't see pictures? There's not really a tactful way to bring something like that up, either, so that doesn't really mean anything. I should probably just wait and see what happens. .-. (...and then Togami dies first and we don't get to figure out anything about him. That would be my luck.)

The moment you add sequencing, the game changes. It's true; almost any common game from game theory has its outcome changed when time becomes a variable and betrayal can cost. The rational actor must change with it, not to become altruistic, but to conserve your own benefit. This was why Celeste found high school life such an interesting, challenging experience. To tell a lie is simple. To gain benefit in a zero-sum game without consequence for cheaters, trivial. To maintain a lie, to guard your actions, lest they end up costing you when the game starts up again? Stimulating.
That was her rational actor view of the situation, but high school had a few more added pitfalls, and she had the misfortune of gender in this case. Normally, when taking a risk she'd prefer to know her opponent's hand before making her own entrance, but seeing as she was a girl - a woman - convention stood in her way in this potential plunge into the abyss they called 'Valentine's'. Chocolate to pass on, and the risk of humiliation come White Day where the boys would bring a return gift. Celes would have thought herself above the fear of humiliation in the eyes of her immature peers (and she was certain Asahina or Fukawa-san would relish in watching her bare her vulnerability only to be shut down) but perhaps it was simply a matter of practicality.
Convention was a tool like anything else. To fit in, to gain benefit from each round of the game, one had to play by the rules.
It was true; there was a simple, safe loophole the likes of Ikusaba and Oogami-san would no doubt exploit; handing out obligation chocolates and be done with it, but Celeste hadn't earned the title of Super High School Level Gambler by cowardly opting out of a challenge. As such, she had instead laid out a plan of potential recipients and rivals.
Enoshima-san would no doubt be a formidable rival should she care to participate in the ritual, but Celeste had seen no indication the gyaru cared anymore of this tradition than she did for the rest of common convention. Fukawa was barely even a player: not only was Celeste far prettier and more pleasant than that stinky eyesore of a girl, but she would no doubt try and be rejected by the cold-hearted Togami-kun whom Celeste had no interest in anyway. Empty-headed and loud as Asahina-san might be, Celeste judged her to be more beautiful and pleasant than herself, but Asahina had shown no inclinations towards any of their classmates and was far too stupid to hide such things. Oogami and Ikusaba-san were already out of the game as far as Celes was concern by force of their serious, introspective personalities and lack of social skills.
Her final rival, Maizono-san, was why she had ultimately given up on Naegi-kun, however. The same decency that would make him accept the chocolate and feel obligated to give a triumph-bringing gift back at White Day would keep him from taking it, should someone get to him first, and the Super High School Level Idol Girl could no doubt lay claim. No matter to her or him her position prohibited actual dating, it could be a gift from 'friends'. Naegi was out of the question and Togami would no doubt love a chance to turn the chocolate down and ground anyone into the dust in plain view.

But the more she thought about it, the stranger it became. She had tried to be analytical, weighted risk against reward of every single boy in the class, even included Yamada-kun for the sake of being thorough, and yet what she had been left with was a particularly pathetic, short list with one name on it and a tiny mind map with the single note "He won't say no to convention."
But why was this? Because a terrible truth had struck her; the continuum between luck of the draw and luck in love. Celes had never lost a gamble in her entire life and she had never considered it might come at a price. It was just her talent, after all. But she also hadn't become a SHSL Gambler by taking unfounded risks and she would treat this as a game to conquer it, this pathetic, terrified little emotion screaming promises of failure inside of her. She would give the chocolate to this man, and he would accept it because his nature compelled him, as surely as hers compelled her to take this potentially life-ruining risk.
With the matter settled, the only remaining obstacle was figuring out how to cook. And perhaps how to conquer the roiling, unfamiliar sense of dread that seemed to take its seat in her abdomen whenever she thought about him now.

No one was under the illusion I actually knew how to write, right?

And excuse any typos on the fact I just wrote this straight into the browser for shit and giggles.

I was actually just thinking about that! And I know this is a crackpot theory for the most part anyway, but Togami's reaction to the "Mr. Porkfeet" thing randomly caught my interest when it happened*. A SHSL Impersonator would feel somewhat isolated from people, I'd imagine, because no one's really seeing them for themselves. The benefit to picking out an Heir to impersonate is that no one will have gotten the chance to actually know that person very well--pretend that you think everyone's beneath you and you're basically set. But if you get a chance to be the "leader" and be recognized on your own merit, your real personality might start to bleed through, especially if you don't know enough about your subject to begin with. Also, on choosing an Heir: being an Heir is easy to fake. Anyone asks you for family secrets, you have an obvious reason to decline without being seen as suspicious. Being an Animal Breeder or a Chef? Not so much. (Of course, there are other SHSL talents that would be easier to fake as well.)

It still leaves way too much unexplained and it's just me coming up with random stuff anyway, but it's the only explanation I can think of. (I'll probably accept that it's likely the real Togami eventually; I'm just being unusually stubborn about it right now. :U) It definitely doesn't explain why someone would choose a person that doesn't weigh anywhere near the same amount or why they'd choose someone like Togami, who would definitely not take kindly to imposters (especially since these kids presumably went to the same school as the DR1 kids); it's a flawed theory with many holes. ...but it's kind of a fun one. :P

*I just can't see Togami being that happy about something like that, no matter how much he went through in the first game. ._. Whereas an imposter, well, the weight is the only thing not a lie about them, so... it's a nickname for them and not their disguise. But maybe Togami is just really proud of the amount he's able to eat now and the fact it's being recognized or something, because if I go with that as my only reasoning for real I might as well say the DR2 one is a flawed clone. @_@

I still kind of hope that Isshiki is still alive though; I want to know what's going on with him and Besshiki, and also he doesn't seem like that bad of a guy besides the whole trying to capture our protagonist thing. (Which is arguably justified, since she had the Incident primed into her memory when she shouldn't have known anything.)

Oh, I don't think she actually killed him. Didn't the shelves just topple over him, pinning him there? He might be injured, but I don't think that would be enough to kill him. And yeah, since he's opposing Junko I don't think he has bad motivations here. It's totally understandable that he would want to find the culprit. I would probably go after Ryouko if I was in his situation myself.

The loading screen for the DR2 website is Monobear dancing a Hawaiian dance. Complete with clamshells and grass skirt. I-I think my brain just broke.

Kanji for Isshiki is 一式, if there's a kanji for Besshiki I haven't been able to find it.

Also, waiting for the LP to finish so I have somebody to discuss the rest of the game with is suffering.
