They actually cast the Wizard's actor, Frank Morgan, in 5 different roles (the Wizard, the Professor Marvel, the gatekeeper, the cabbie, and the guard with the whiskers) because they were afraid audiences who only came to see him would be disappointed he had such a small role and only at the end.

The gatekeeper and the Wizard aren't intended to be related as characters though, unlike say Professor Marvel and the Wizard or damn near every other major character as the Oz characters are all based on people Dorthy knows from Kansas, except Glinda for some reason who seems like she should be her aunt but isn't.

Exegesis: I love this image more and more every time I look at it. It's layered.


You have such a range. The earnest expression, professional-politician-affected by necessity. The biting-into-sourness grimace mask over his shoulder, so many sacrifices and swallowed pride and personal dreams, gone in order to support this. Sadness behind, and humiliated anguish front and center. But to the right, oh, to the right. The boy's face is utterly blank. His eyes are dead. He breathes, but his mind is a thousand miles or more away. The play he's forced by family birth to take part of is only his dissociated body, but he sees nothing of it. If you could get behind those dead eyes and see through his soul, you would see awful wonders and terrors.

Okay, I finally gave in and removed the Santa-Hat Mechanicus skull. And since I'm out, now, I picked a new avatar that was more suitable, and felt fitting. Scandal Savage - she's been through some shit, she's taken some knocks, but she'll still cut you down to size if you piss her off. I'm sure you can see why I'd identify with her. ;)

What was the one you just changed from? That looked awesome as well (not the santa hat one, I'm talking about the intermission).

That was the Demon Hunter, from Diablo 3, drawn by Mike Mignola. I would have loved to use it, but I couldn't find a way to crop it in a manner that made me happy. It was either too small to see the face, or too close to see the birds. Hang on, I'll attach the big version to this post! Also, I think I've already said this, but I knew I was going to like you from the moment I saw your avatar. Nobody fucks with The Wall. (click for full size)

That's so irritating. I know I spent forever on cropping this so it would make me happy. I don't play Diablo 3, but this makes me wanna. Or I could go look at some Mike Mignola stuff.

Hm, I was wrong - I guess the Demon Hunter wasn't drawn by Mike Mignola. It sure looks exactly like his style, though. It was actually done by Duncan Fegredo.
