goddamn primadonna actors who can't find their goddamn marks on the stage THEY'RE CLEARLY DELINEATED! AND DON'T STAND UNDER THE FLYS WHEN THEY'RE BEING FLOWN!
So apparently this is a thing. I'd bet all the money I have in my pocket that there's a strong overlap between these folks and MRAs. That's from their Facebook page where, as you can imagine the most wonderful people in the world come out to comment.
Excuse me, I think I'm going to go vomit now while crying over the fact that I'm married and my brother-in-law is not allowed to be.
After reading the OneReasonwhy, An Open Letter, this thread and others of the same type I like to dip into the Cute Animal thread as a sort of mind cleanser. After looking at that website and reading Jerri's thread about that GQ article, animals need to get much more cute and fast.
That's the same sort of privileged-majority victimhood that you see from "traditional Christians" claiming that they're attacked every day, when they really mean "some people don't share our beliefs and they have the gall to say that out loud! When will this persecution end?!?"
Is this where we put general homophobic bullshit or is there a better thread? http://americablog.com/2013/01/it-gets-better-49ers-gay.html
Obama Administration to file amicus brief in support of gay marriage: http://firstread.nbcnews.com/_news/...rt-for-gay-marriage-before-supreme-court?lite
http://www.slate.com/blogs/the_slat...lican_changes_mind_on_gay_marriage_after.html On the one hand, I am happy because this is in some sense reasonable: in the face of new information, re-evaluate your previously held positions, and revise them. On the other hand, this is the quintessentially Republican moment: "I have spent years opposing this issue and demonizing my opponents, until the first moment where it inconvenienced me a little bit." On the gripping hand, fuck Day by Day.
Since he's a Christian, I'd like him to go further and publicly say that he doesn't believe homosexuality is a sin. Otherwise, agreed, fuck that guy. Being ok with gay marriage while still thinking there's something wrong about being gay does not make one a hero.
Not to mention that -- as my ex rightfully pointed out -- he took the first opportunity to shoehorn states' rights into the conversation as expected from the GOP, which means he's going to do absolutely sweet fuck-all about it. "This is totally a thing we should be doing, except that as a Federal legislator I don't actually want us to be doing it."
I disagree. He's a legislator. The only relevant question is what legislative/legal stance he's prepared to take. Now as Gnu pointed out, he's only expressed an opinion unsupported by any useful call for action or actual legislative steps, so no, he's no hero. But he's not a minister -- his personal moral opinion means fuck all.
Via U.S. Millie, New Zealand legalises Gay Marriage and the public gallery above parliament spontaneously bursts into song:
See? You see what happens when you legalize gay marriage? Our most revered institutions transformed overnight!
New Zealand has it's flaws, but the general "common sense" approach to social policies like this, and the fairly steadfast refusal of New Zealanders to be ashamed for wanting to support the disadvantaged is something I do really love about the place. Oh, in case you are wondering, the song is Pokarekare Ana, a love song. It is more famously sung by Hayley Westenra and, no doubt, our big opera star, Kiri Te Kanawa.
Okay I get the sentiment, and it's sweet, but comparing calling oneself an ally while straight and cis to coming out as gay is majorly icky.
I disagree. Many people use the straight and cis excuse to not be active in support of gay marriage, or maybe feel like it's none of their business. This is a major boost signal, so people won't say that those who aren't gay or trans* but in support of gay rights aren't allowed to make a fuss.
I think that the comparison is inherently problematic. Coming out of the closet can mean loss of work, home, or friends, and brings with it a host of discrimination. It is no small matter, and comparing it to calling oneself an ally, something that comes with no hard obligation or problems, is, in my previous words, icky. I'm not sure why I'm elaborating, though, because you didn't really address what I said. I don't like the comparison, not the sentiment; your post seems to be defending the sentiment. I think that straight and cis people supporting LGBT+ issues is great. I don't think that those people comparing what they're doing to actually being LGBT+ is great in the least.
Catholic high school hires openly Methodist teacher, fires her after her mother dies and the obituary reveals that she is in a co-habitating relationship with another lady. http://wosu.org/2012/news/2013/05/0...isputes-bishops-claims-she-violated-contract/ So, it's OK to not be Catholic, but not OK to be that not Catholic.
Do you happen to write under the pseudonym Layne? Possibly of the Ken sort? He always excelled at being a beardy purveyor of bad news.
MN house passes bill legalizing same sex marriage 75-59. Four Republicans voted for the bill. It goes to the Senate on Monday. http://www.startribune.com/politics/statelocal/206870421.html My only regret is that there was no singing afterward. Well, I'm sure there was some, but it wasn't together.
The wailing and gnashing of teeth by Republicans in the local news over the last week has been the schaden-est of freudes. So much fun. A bloo bloo, motherfuckers. Bloo bloo motherfucking bloo. Hah!
