After mulling it over for a while, you're right -- I've been too cynical.

Nate Silver does a Reddit Ask Me Anything. As always, you will be much better off if you use something like Reddit Enhancement Suite to help set your display preferences for large threads and if you try different sorting methods (starting with "best", of course). I like the one where he was asked about statistics in education, and also the between-elections future of 538 and there's also some good stuff on the actual software he uses and the like.
