Yeah, I have to agree with brett (for probably the first time ever) on this one. Santurum embodies many truly horrible things, but a Nazi he is not. Comparing any modern American politician to Hitler or Stalin only diminishes whatever point you're trying to make.

Perhaps the point was that Santorum has done the same to Obama. Not sure, though.

Agreed, it's not enough to make me change my mind and become republican and vote for him, but it does make me think better of him. (slightly)

A lot of other people manage to not be worse than Hitler, I'm not seeing how this would effect your opinion of the man. Now, if he thought animal cruelty was hilarious, that might be something worthy of consideration. This just tells you he's capable of vaguely human sentiments.
  8. brettmcd Keeper of the Elemental Materials

There are a lot of politicians who don't give a damn about animal cruelty and puppy/kitten mills. When one does I do think better of them as they are going against what in many areas can be a big business. In PA it is a huge business so I will give him credit for bucking that in his own state.
  9. Pogo Hard Cider Gal

That's like adding a little wine to a goblet filled with piss.

You're pretty fucking desperate when you're a presidential candidate appealing to animal cruelty sentimentality. I don't believe the motherfucker for a second.

Interestingly Santorum's stance on puppy mills puts him on the opposite side to his own party line. The Tea Party led Republican response to various bills introduced to regulate puppy mills was that this was an a liberal attack on the middle class owning pets.

Liking kittens doesn't excuse the rest of his rather nasty views I'm afraid.

Santorums diplomatic strengths emerged as he angered the The Netherlands by saying they force euthanasia on the elderly
Obviously none of this is true and the "Santorum Clarifies" has not happened yet but the Dutch are mad.

Santorum: Obama is ‘a snob’ because he wants ‘everybody in America to go to college’

This is the one of the weirder bits of doublethink to come out of Santorum's mouth. I understood why he said "education is bad because it erodes religion," it's both true and indicative of his twisted thinking. Here, he seems to have forgotten what snob means. Wanting a college education for everyone is egalitarian, if unrealistic - a sentiment that's nearly 180 degrees opposed to snobbery. Not that Obama ever said such a thing, so far as I can tell, but perhaps my google-fu is weak.

What amazes me is that he continues to talk about how education is bad, and this hasn't destroyed him in the primary.
  22. jerri blank Despondent Fancybear

Look at which party he belongs to.

That said, I'm relieved that, at least for now, Santorum is trouncing the other hopefuls in Tennessee. That means that my partner and I may not need to go to the polls next Tuesday to vote for him (we have open primaries). I REALLY want him to get the nomination.

Not to mention Santorum once expressed the same goal in 2006, just for all residents of Pennsylvania.

And Santorum has several degrees himself.

    Blatant. Hypocrisy.

He hasn't out-and-out said no one should get a college education. The implication is that education is fine for the upper classes, but something that the masses not only don't need, but shouldn't want.

"I don't believe in an America where the separation of church and state are absolute," he told 'This Week' host George Stephanopoulos. "The idea that the church can have no influence or no involvement in the operation of the state is absolutely antithetical to the objectives and vision of our country...to say that people of faith have no role in the public square? You bet that makes me want to throw up."

Santorum also on Sunday told Meet The Press host David Gregory that separation of church and state was "not the founders' vision."

Yep, three of them. All from godless secular state schools, too!

Couldn't he have had the decency to go to a religious private school?
  30. Keldroc Elitist Negative Nancy

So they put it in the First Amendment as what, a decoy? Is this like the "God put the dinosaur bones there to test our faith" thing?

"Believing with you that religion is a matter which lies solely between man and his God, that he owes account to none other for his faith or his worship, that the legislative powers of government reach actions only, and not opinions, I contemplate with sovereign reverence that act of the whole American people which declared that their legislature should 'make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof,' thus building a wall of separation between church and State. Adhering to this expression of the supreme will of the nation in behalf of the rights of conscience, I shall see with sincere satisfaction the progress of those sentiments which tend to restore to man all his natural rights, convinced he has no natural right in opposition to his social duties."

The First Amendment was saying that the State can't found a religion, like the Church of England. It can, and has, been stretched to mean the State can't show preference for a religion nor deference to a religion in exclusion of others but you'll never convince anyone with "The First Amendment says"
  32. Reene Hard Cider Gal

I find the emphasis placed on early religious education (or lack thereof) strange considering the research that shows there's no difference in religious acuity or inclination between children that go to religious/Sunday school, pray every day, etc and those that don't, up until like age 10 or so.

But then I guess Santorum doesn't let facts get in the way of politics.
  33. Fact based reality apparently is overrated in the Republican party since at least 2001
  34. jerri blank Despondent Fancybear

I want the White House to put out a statement that "this Administration believes that all women should have the same right to vote as men, and we're going to prohibit employers from interfering with their female employees' right to vote, period, religious objections notwithstanding." Then Santorum and the rest of the batshit Republicans, because they have Obama Derangement Syndrome, will have to stake out a position against women's right to vote because Obama's statement is a violation of employers' religious liberty. Think of all the fun the White House could have with this.

Given that Santorum came out against education and the seperation of church and state and in favor of CO2 emissions (really) this weekend, I don't think the White House needs to say much of anything to bait him to look any worse.

Nono, Santorum is saying that that is what Obama is saying.
    Obama says "Education is important."
And Santorum responds with "OOOOOOOO! You dude hear that?? Obama just said the uneducated aren't important! what a buuuurn!"
He's pandering to the uneducated which, frankly, were going to vote for the Republicans anyway.
"Hate" seems to be his strategy and "stupid" his aim.

Man, and I thought Rick Perry was the winner of the "how do I implode my campaign" award for this election year with his YouTube "I hate gays in the military" ad. But no, Rick Santorum comes along and not only accuses Obama of snobbery for aspiring to educate everyone in America, but also claims that we need MORE church in our state because only godly people know what's really good for the country. It's like the democrats built a Rick Santorum robot and programmed it to say the most utterly stupid and inane shit imaginable.

I predict Rick Santorum's next campaign promise will be to make high school optional and let it be the kids choice, not the parents. I mean hey, the less educated the American public is, the better they will respond to outrageous conservative Christian and Tea Party nonsense right? Education for Americans means they will be able to see right through the Washington bullshit (from both sides) and we absolutely can't have that.

But has this really destroyed his campaign? Sure, it plays very badly with us, and hopefully with independents, but what is the Republican primary voter like these days?
