So now that I have an iPad, I would like to know why there is not more Baldur's gate talk and what are the must haves in the strategy/RPG/simulation genres.
There's not more Baldur's Gate talk because most people agreed that it was kind of a buggy mess and they'd wait for a few patches to buy it. Also, the best RPG is The World Ends With You, so get to work on that one.
The Blockheads is out and free (NZ link, sorry) and will easily scratch the "explore/build/mine" itch that anyone has.
IT seems like something I would go "Oh cool!" and then I would load it up and go "Oh, yeah, I remember this. Well, I think I'll play this later." and never turn it on again.
It uses the same touch-based interface as FF: Dimensions, and a lot of (if not all) the 3D assets from the DS version, but it's not identical. Instead of FMV all the cinematics are performed in-engine. It also has a "babby's first jrpg" easy difficulty mode and automapping. I like it, but if you tried another version of FF4 and hated it this isn't going to magically convert you. I would still recommend FF Tactics as the first Final Fantasy iOS title for anyone to try, that one's presentation and depth hasn't been matched yet (though FF4 probably has a longer playtime). FF4 is still a damn sight better than the earlier Final Fantasy titles released for iOS (FF Tactics and to a lesser degree FF Dimensions excepted, and FF Dimensions is almost 100% for nostalgia addicts)
LiquidSketch is free right now and has a ton of great water physics puzzles: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/liquidsketch/id544717096?mt=8
I was enjoying LiquidSketch until it decided in some levels that no, gravity does not affect the flow of the liquid like you practiced in the past 20 minutes. kthxbye
That's the whole point. It doesn't stick with a single input mechanism throughout all the levels, though the water physics (including pressure) remain constant. Which is why it's a puzzle game, and not a gravity simulator. There's a big round button on the right that says On if tilting affects gravity and Off if it doesn't.
I just started playing Dungelot, and I am hooked. Touch Arcade described it as a casual roguelike, which seems accurate. You earn coins in each playthrough to unlock new skills and classes (as well as buying stuff within a playthrough). I want to unlock the damned brewer! Here's the TA review for more info: http://toucharcade.com/2013/01/14/dungelot-review/
This proved to be a big hit so thanks for the heads up. My 12-year old daughter and I were fighting over who got to try the puzzles first (and of course she won). And fwiw, neither she nor I were bothered when the water flow stopped reacting to gravity in certain puzzles, we just took it as another part of the challenge.
To be fair, I've returned to the game later and tried the other puzzles. I still think I had the most fun splashing the liquids around in the gyro mode.
Penny Arcade: Gamers vs. Evil (the card game) has dropped from $4.99 to 0.99. This is a Playdek app, made by the same dudes behind Ascension. Worth an impulse buy from me. Edit: apparently all Playdek stuff is 99 cents.
All the Playdek stuff seems to be down to $.99, so it's a great time to get Ascension and Nightfall if you've skipped them in the past.
$.99 is still about $.99 more than Fluxx is worth, but I like Playdek so I'll give 'er a go at that price. (I was pretty stunned to discover recently that talking shit about Fluxx on BGG can really bring out a lot of anger in people. I never would have guessed that the world contains die hard Fluxx fans.)
Get them, too. The Nightfall ones are also reduced to a buck, but play it a bit first. It's much harder to get into than is Ascension.
It's amazing how much anger BGG people have about their games. And yeah, I sort of assumed everybody had settled on "kind of fun the first time but after that it's fundamentally shitty unless you're 7 years old" as the consensus for Fluxx.
Core Worlds is kind of Dominion meets Ascension in space. PA is kind of the wrong parts of Dominion borrow a small bit from Ascension and then pepper it with PA references that are boring the second time you play it. It's possible that later expansions make it more fun, as with Dominion, but I find the game pretty braindead. I can routinely beat the hardest AI by just playing a power strat. But hell, it's worth $.99 if only to let Playdek know you still love them even though their last three games haven't been Agricola. And they still haven't told us what they're doing with Ludically.
We live in the worst timeline, owen, so no. When Stronghold Games announced they would be putting out an iOS app I got so excited I nearly wept with joy. Then they said it was a timer app for one of their other games, and my happiness turned to bitter ashes in my mouth and my joyous tears became those of blackest resentment.
To be fair, Fluxx is lots of fun if you are drunk or otherwise impaired. Consider that there is a special edition of Fluxx just for stoners: http://www.amazon.com/Looney-Labs-420LOO-Fluxx-Stoner/dp/1929780451
Time Surfer is pretty neat. It's Tiny Wings but with instant death always lurking just offscreen. To offset this, you have the ability to rewind time so you can alter your course and avoid your previous mistake in favor of a new one. If I hadn't been sold on the game before I got the mission "Die ten times in one game", that would have done it.
I need someone to say, "This patch makes BG for the iPad the bee's knees". You don't even have to be sincere. I just need an excuse.
A free to play Ghostbusters game dropped today. Sounds like it could be a lot of fun and hell, it's free. I'm a huge Ghostbusters fan and thrilled to see it runs on my seemingly decrepit iPad 1 and even my 3GS era iPod Touch.
So I just got some good news -- my studio's first iOS game, Stick to It, will be releasing on the App Store on February 7. Even better, it's going to be free for the first 72 hours that it's live. The game is a one-control physics puzzler. You're trying to help Spike get back to his mommy, and Spike has one ability: he sticks to things. Touch the screen to make him stick, release to make him let go. Here's the trailer: ...and a link to the official website. (Must not spam Broken Forum! Must not spam Broken Forum! I'm pretty excited about this one.)
