Oh man, new Between the Buried and Me? Awesome. I'll definately be checking that out.

More Baroness news. after reading that, someone near my desk at work must've been chopping onions while dusting or something.

This track has taken an early lead as one of my favorites on the new Converge album:

  3. Farnsworth Beardy Magnificence

Not new, not exactly metal, but awesome rock.

So there was a new Dethklok album out last week. I think I may just pick this up.

The Sword has a new album out. I've only listened to it once, but, uh, it's sort of bad. Diving back into All We Love We Leave Behind to make up for it.

No time to talk much about it, but the new Neurosis album, Honor Found in Decay, released today. This post is just a reminder. I talk a bit more about the band and link to an article about this new album in this older post.

I haven't heard the whole album yet myself, but what I've heard so far is pretty much more of the stuff I typically want and expect from the band.

My initial impression of the new Neurosis album isn't so good, but I don't think I've given it a fair shake yet.

In other news, Om released an album back in July and I had no idea. It is pretty awesome.

I'm digging the Neurosis album. So far, it's a bit less sinister than Given to the Rising. Breathes a little more.

I love the new Om so very very much, yes. I thought I mentioned it here, but I must not have.

Om needs to officially change their name to Om Nom Nom, because apparently that's how my brain will forever choose to interpret it anymore anyway.

You very likely did mention it, I just don't check the thread very often. My metal tastes don't overlap much with kerzain's, so the thread is usually useless to me.

Don't feel intimidated by my presence here, I promise not to taunt or maliciously mock your contributions.

Feel free to fill those gaps I neglect and have no real ear or taste for, such as most Black Metal, Symphonic Black Metal, Viking Metal, Folk Metal, Power Metal, or whatever genres you're into (just not 80s hair metal, for god's sakes -- I mean, we gotta have some kind of standards!). In the mean time, and predictably, I'll just keep plugging away at the typical thrash metal, classic heavy metal, sludge metal, technical death metal, post metal, nu-metal, hardcore/mathcore, progressive, avant-garde, techo industrial metal, groove metal, and math metal bands I tend to limit my metal interests to.

I look forward to listening to all the stuff you'll bring to the table.

Sorry, I didn't mean to belittle your contributions! The case is really that my taste in metal is very narrow, and while yours is very broad, our tastes (or at least what you usually post here) don't overlap much.

To share, I've been listening to Initial State a lot after Eduardo X turned me onto them and their one album that came out way back in 1994.

I do listen to a lot more than I post here... because, well, I have to set some sort of limit. Most of my posts are about upcoming music and the like, because I'm always trying to actively expand my library. Although I'll delve into older stuff here, it's usually when trying to fill a request, or to serve as a reference to something else. And much of my library is decades old.

Okay, yea that video you just posted is a great song. So apparently Eduardo X has been fucking me over by not sharing this earlier.

If you dig that type of music, you might appreciate Coalesce (they've been around forever, but they've only got something like 5 albums out).

And certain early parts of your song remind me of Nailbomb (although NB is a bit more mechanical/industrial/punk, and less Hardcore sounding). Nailbomb tracks don't tend to diverge from their primary riffs too much though:

Both of these bands have a tendency to forget to allow their music to breathe (something another hardcore/metal band, Converge, is actually really good about), but if you can handle tons of aggression with little wiggle room these guys will deliver. I'd actually be surprised if you couldn't get into Converge.

Totally buying that album you mentioned BTW. Good find.

I've tried to get into Converge a few times now, but they just haven't clicked for me. I'll give them another try just for you.

If only my wife were as open minded.

Although Jane Doe (the one I linked) is considered their defining album, it would probably be best for new listeners to start with their most recent release and move backwards:
All We Love We Leave Behind
    Axe to Fall
No Heroes (or just jump straight to Jane Doe from here)
    You Fail Me
    Jane Doe
    (insert older stuff here)

Their most recent album is their most metal (in the traditional sense), and easily their most approachable, with each prior album moving further and further away from anything that even resembles easy listening on your first foray. I wont deny they are so much an acquired taste, but once acquired they'll be a band you spend the rest of your time comparing other new hardcore/mathcore bands to -- when you aren't too busy over-indulging in their music.

Stopped into the music store yesterday and picked up a few CDs: High on Fire's The Art of Self Defense, The Sword's Apocryphon, and Horn of the Rhino's Grengus. Haven't had a chance to listen to the new The Sword album. I'll have to report back later. (I didn't even know they were coming out with a new one until I saw it on the shelf.) I'm assuming you all know the High on Fire album. Here's a sample from The Horn of the Rhino (I try not to make eye contact with the cover art):

    Return Apocryphon.

Thanks for this. Been listening to what youtube has available, good stuff and great for programming. Makes me think of less-dense Sleep.

That's because it is two members of Sleep.
  22. sinfony Armchair Designer

Correctly, as it is Sleep bassist Al Cisneros.

Edit to point out that Chris Hakius is no longer in Om.

Huh, small genre? :) Looks like Sunn O)) and Earth* have some team members in common too?

Which by the way I found via Mog's "related" feature thanks to Om, so triple thanks for this now!
  25. sinfony Armchair Designer

No members in common as far as I am aware, but Sunn O))) are huge Earth devotees.

Joe Preston played with Sunn O))) briefly.

Edit: Although I'm not sure I would call him a "member".
  27. sinfony Armchair Designer

Sunn O))) is pretty much just Anderson and O'Malley, with a rotating cast of weirdos.

How about some 90s doom/sludge metal? I've only just barely discovered these guys, a band called Acid Bath, and love everything I've heard so far. Apparently they only released two studio albums before one of their members was killed by a drunk driver, causing the band to subsequently dissolve soon after.

I'm really not too sure what to make of the new Wintersun album. I want to like it but... I dunno, something about it just doesn't sit right with me. I love me some overwrought, pretentious music to be sure but this album is just a little too much pretentiousness. Not sure, it's hard to quantify my unease about it.

I can't remember if I've linked Ne Obliviscarus in here, but their first album Portal Of I is a goddamned masterpiece. Heavy use of a violin, both singing and growling, ultra-technical delivery, and an amazing composition of both acoustic melodies and flat out melt your face off metal.

Full album stream, but if you want you can find each individual track up there.

And if the brutal start puts you off, just trust in me and give the whole thing a listen anyway, or alternately, seek proof in track 5:

As far as I can tell these guys are relatively unknown, which boggles my mind with such a beautiful album. Of course, the album took them 9 years to make and is their first, so I don't really expect to ever hear a follow up. But these guys deserve some success, so share the shit out of this.

Violin, eh? I do like me some traditional string instruments in my metal (and rock in general).

I'll have to listen to that later.
