Also, there were issues getting FDA approval to use stevia as a sweetener in the US.

Here is a summary from Wikipedia.

I drink Diet Coke almost exclusively as a soda. I was always told it would stunt my growth, and admittedly I grew later than others in school (I was also the second youngest in my class so I'm betting that had more to do with it), and am currently 6'4".

Most of that stuff seems like scare tactics.

See, without that horrible diet Coke poisoning you, you could have been 7'.

Given that extreme height is linked to circulatory problems and leads to problems with infections and such in extremities, diet coke probably saved your life.

Well, yes. "what a shame" in a sort of "I am clueless as to how awful that would be" way. Of course, we've now sucked all the fun out of the room.

Toxicity is inherent in most substances and the only question is the LD50. Similarly, there is no such thing as, say, zero dioxin. It's always about safe levels and toxic levels.

IIRC, doesn't aspartame have some rather nasty metabolites?

Yes, but none in any quantity that would be dangerous compared to 'safe' foods like milk, meat, fruit juice, etc.

Interestingly enough, this is true of two relatively benign substances in the air we breathe: oxygen and nitrogen. Both are an issue if you dive. A high partial pressure of nitrogen results in impaired thinking, known as nitrogen narcosis, though some people are more susceptible to being "narced" than others. Above roughly 1.6 atmospheres partial pressure, oxygen is toxic, and will send you into convulsions, which is why high-oxygen mixes (commonly called "nitrox") have a more restrictive depth limit than straight air. 32% O2 = 1.6 ATM at 5 atmospheres total pressure = 40m depth. Usually you plan for 1.4 atm O2 maximum for safety's sake.

This is why deep dives use a gas mix that is largely helium. You want to get rid of nitrogen both to avoid decompression illness and narcosis, and you want to reduce oxygen to avoid O2 poisoning.

I saw this posted on Facebook by someone I like recently. You know, the fact that the heading talks about "Downfall of the New World Order" should be the first sign that these people aren't playing with a full deck of cards.

    http://wakeup-world.com/2012/02/21/video-what-happens-in-your-body-when-you-eat-processed-foods/

Really, ramen doesn't digest the same way fresh noodles do? Shocking. You know what else doesn't always digest fully is corn and peas. IT MUST BE POISON TOO.

that link made me feel bad that I am strongly (if hypocritically) anti-processed food. I just think it loses a lot of its foody benefits, leads to unhelpful monoculture, and causes environmental degradation.

I don't think too many people would argue that fresh food is generally better than processed stuff. It's the whole "PROCESSED FOODS CAUSE CANCER" scaremongering and non-science explanations that's the problem.

Well, the one about losing food-y benefits is sort of a case by case thing. There are certainly lots of proceeds foods that turn something decent into empty calories, but I tend to go case by case rather than applying a rule of thumb about the amount of processing.

If there's a rube-goldburg process for creating something healthy and delicious, I'm all over it.

I try to follow Michael Pollan's "Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants." But am currently being spectacularly unsuccessful, LOL.

I won't follow any rule that eliminates pizza from my diet.
  20. Jason T Keeper of the Elemental Materials

If that stuff works for people, more power to 'em. I defy anyone to be less healthy for eating a gross of boneless skinless chicken breasts or powdered whey, however. (Of course the objection to meat can be as much environmental as dietary.) Environment aside, it can be easier to do a restricted calorie diet on a "lots of (100% lean) meat" basis than on a "mostly plants" basis simply because protein is the low calorie least-harm macronutrient.

you can use food to assemble other food! pizza <3 As long as it has <6 ingredients as sold by the store, I guess. So His point is a lot of the foods you might think are unprocessed, you look at the label and are surprised.

    Compare:
Boboli brand Pizza Sauce (recommended on a health site, livestrong.com)

One serving equal to ½ pouch, or 71 g of pizza sauce, has 50 calories, no fat, no cholesterol, 360 mg of sodium, 10 g of total carbohydrates, 1 g of dietary fiber, 8 g of sugars and 2 g of protein. One serving provides 10 percent of the vitamin A you need daily. Ingredients include water, tomato paste, high fructose corn syrup, salt, garlic powder, modified food starch, onion powder, citric acid and spices. One pouch will thinly cover a 12-inch pizza.

    to
Cat Cora's Easy Pizza Sauce Ingredients

    • 1 (4-ounce) can tomato paste (Ingredient list: tomatoes)
    • 1 1/2 cups water
    • 1/3 cup extra-virgin olive oil
    • 2 cloves garlic, minced
    • Salt and pepper
    • 1/2 tablespoon chopped fresh oregano leaves
    • 1/2 tablespoon chopped fresh basil leaves
    • 1/2 tablespoon chopped fresh rosemary leaves
Version 2 does have a can of tomato paste, but if you choose the right brand (Contadina here) it doesn't add any processed ingredients such as high fructose corn syrup, modified food starch, and citric acid. Now, you may not object to those things, and I agree they won't out and out kill you, but for a lot of reasons I try to avoid em.
I also try to get as much of my protein as possible from non-meat although I'm not a vegetarian by any means. MMMMMMM I love animals, they taste delicious.

What, people really believe diet Coke will stunt your growth? I've never heard of it until now. It came to Norway when I was nine(I think), and our whole family instantly switched over to it. I had a late growth spurt - I was 155cm(5'0") tall at age 15-16, and thought I'd never get any taller. I was never told it had anything to do with the diet Coke I drank, though. Odd...

I have close relatives (we're talking immediate family) who send me articles from Dr. Mercola's website. It is impossible to even look at a can of Coke Zero in their presence without getting a lecture about how aspartame causes cancer.

Bring Coke Zero to every family function. If they say something (which they will), lecture them very pedantically about science. Prepare at least two hours' total worth of lecture. Optimally, add in a set of Powerpoint slides. Go for the fully Penny Arcade effect.

To be clear: I am a committed, inveterate troll. If one of my parents believed such a thing, it would not stop me from relentlessly trolling that parent of mine until I got bored of it, which would be a long, long time.

I would do it in an incredibly pedantic, didactic manner. It would be excellent.

Also, I would arrange for there to be nothing at all whatsoever to drink if ever I hosted something, or someone I could influence hosted something, other than more Coke Zero and similar products, and they would become instruments of my trolling.

Reading the wiki article on him is amazing. Just one (of the many) thing that leapt out at me:

Crackpot. Omniscia, you really should ask your mom her beliefs on AIDS. If she follows modern science and logic, and says its caused by the HIV virus, then you can throw this back in her face (dude's so wrong on AIDS, how can you trust anything he says). If, however, she agrees with him, post it here so we can laugh about it.

Either way, it's a win! For us, of course.

Asshole doesn't seem like the right noun. "Schizophrenic loon" seems closer. Nothing he said was particularly offensive, just industrial strength crazy. I only got to 4:23 before I got bored with it, so maybe he says something worse further on. "Who let him on stage" does seem like a significant question, since you'd think there wouldn't be two people who took that crap seriously.

    Learn more about Vortex Math!

So, among other things, I don't think this guy knows what "math" is.

My favourite quote is probably: "We see all the numbers we are familiar with. 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9. So those are all the single digit numbers known. I don't know of anyone who's ever any of talk of ever done suggested another single digit number that exists."

I guess he hasn't heard of bases, but whatever.
