You really, really need to try one out first. The grip has all this angled shit going on, and if your grip style doesn't work with it, you'll hate it, much as I do mine. I also think the nibs are horseshit, but they do have the benefit of being very easily interchangeable and very inexpensive. A lot of people really like them, so like I said, try one out first.

And how much is "not very expensive"?

Well, I'm looking for a decent fountain pen ideally < ~$70.

The other two pens on my short list so far are this Lamy Studio:

    And this Monteverde Invincia:

Double your budget, buy a Lamy 2000, don't look back.

Or shop around for a nice vintage pen. $70 can get you something really sweet. Is there a pen show in your area? Those are a great place to find some great deals.

balut, I have like 9 Lamy Al-Stars and I love them dearly. They're my favorite knockabout pens ever.

See, I already have a fancypen, my Cross Townsend with gold accents and nib. I'm looking for a nice sorta everyday pen, not cheap but not super expensive. If I can get a good deal on a fancypen, then that'd be nice, but it's not a priority, merely an alternative.

    Lamy, huh? That sounds familiar...

Yep. Old and beat up and not used in years and years, but still.

I've got two of those Lamys, one fine, one medium. Quite enjoy them. I use converters in both.

Just got some stationery porn in the mail, aka the new Levenger catalog. $69 for a soft iPad lap pillow. Hahahaahah. But Jesus some of their stuff is beautiful. Way overpriced, but beautiful.

Aurora bought a new pen recently for her German lessons, so I was reminded that I had one for like 15 years, the last 10 of those it sat in a box out of sight and out of mind. So I took it out, sent it to repair, and now it's in use again. It's a cross, but I have no idea of the model name:

Pic is weird, color balance wise. it's kind of metal/silver with gold accents, not the weird bluish color that it looks like here.

I tweeted that the Levenger catalog I got was like porn. The company retweeted it. I am amused.

yep, that looks legit, though the one I have is not shiny silver, it's quite matte. But the price seems the same, and most of the features as well, so probably just an old model. Thanks, balut

This semester's creative writing class requires a journal. I decided that was the occasion to get a Lamy Al-Star. I've already got a Lamy Safari w/ a fine nib, but I'm a bit anal about SUPER FINE NIB so I got the super-fine nib on the Al-Star. So far I'm liking it!

I've finally gotten to the point where I'm sending thank-you notes to people who interview me, because I want a goddamn job already and I picked up some plain stationery from Hallmark.

Of course, I had to get 'fancy' pens too, so I picked up Pilot Precise V5 RT pens with extra fine nibs, in both blue and black. I'm excited that you can get refills for them, but we'll see if I lose them first, since I don't think I've ever run out of pen ink in a pen before.

Interestingly to me, the back of the packages emphasize that they are safe for plane use! I... didn't even consider that as a problem that needed solving. I guess I just don't know much about pens.

The Pilot Precise V5 is my favorite non-fountain pen. Actually... I had bought a Lamy Al-Star ballpoint (same body as the fountain pen, just different contents and point), and I put a V5 refill in it because I like the V5 point so much. I use it lots. I also have regular disposable V5's all over the house. I need to buy some more purple ones...

Unfortunately, the first one we had (which hubby 'accidentally' acquired from work) exploded. I'm not sure if it's because he was carrying it around in his pocket so much, or if it's because he's rough on his pens (he chews on them, tosses them around, flips them in the air, and is generally careless), or if it was a fluke, but I was pretty unhappy because now I have to try to get pen ink out of his pants. Luckily it was a blue pen, so even if it doesn't come out all the way, it won't be very noticeable on his jeans.

This is why I can't have nice things. xD
