The Unofficial New Year's Resolutions Thread 2013 Edition

Discussion in 'January And Everything After' started by Creole Ned, Dec 31, 2012.

  1. Creole Ned Being Nice For A Week

Some people think New Year's resolutions are silly and if you're committing to something (weight loss, exercise, being a better person, remembering to wash the dishes before they become a biological hazard, etc.) you should commit immediately and not wait until an arbitrary point on a calendar someone else made up.

This thread is not for those people.

Instead, it's for people like me who use January 1st as a convenient way to commit anew to things. My list is fairly concise:

    1. Write for one hour per day, every day.
    2. Keep to my maintenance weight.
    3. Run at least three days a week.

#1 is on-track, #2 is a work in progress (I'm about six pounds over, mostly due to the lack of #3 and Nanaimo bars) and #3 is awaiting approval from my doctor pending the examination of a wonky ankle that may or may not be sufficiently recovered. In all, I see my resolutions as being doable and this makes me feel good, despite the stupid head cold I currently have.

Feel free to share your own resolutions for becoming an Adonis/world famous author/self-made millionaire or what have you.

(Hopefully I'm not the only one who does this.)

I really really really want to get back in shape. I know that's like the ultimate cliche resolution, but it must be done. It's just so easy to come up with pathetic excuses not to go out and run.

The other one is to somehow figure out who I want to be. I'm tired of just existing. My job is to pay the bills and nothing more and I'm way too old for that to be the case. I have no idea how I'm going to get this one done, but I'm going to fucking try!

    1. Lose at least thirty pounds (will hopefully be a little easier once the PCOS has been taken care of; with as little as I've been eating for most of December, I should have shed at least five to ten)
    2. Find steady, reasonably-paying, non-retail employment
    3. Try to finish my undergrad degree, though that's more a matter of bureaucracy than of willpower
    4. Learn to make the world's best goddamn pho ever made by a white woman.

Lose weight! (Again). I had lost abut 30 lbs in the past year and a half, but then fell off the wagon and put it all back on. Going to try and get back down to my target weight (hopefully for longer than a week, this time).

Every year I fail at my New Years resolutions. I really try. Really. Last year I wanted to make my feet less minging. I worked really hard with them for about two months but then ran out of foot polish and never got any more. Instead I managed to lose over 40lb and have hugely improved my fitness.
So my resolution for this year is to moisturize daily. If I do it then my skin will really appreciate it but if I don't manage it then it's not the end of the world.
  8. Athryn Despondent Fancybear

All you weight-losing resolvers, try to stop by the weightloss thread. That thread (and MyFitnessPal) are the two things that most helped me get most of the way to my goal.

As for my own resolution this year, I haven't decided yet, but I'm juggling between a couple. We'll see what sticks.

Time to throw some lofty resolutions up there!

    1) Drop 40 pounds by the 4th of July. I have reinforcement in the form of a challenge from my boss at work, so this should be a fun one.
    2) See about turning my photography hobby into a small business.
    3) Finish something publication-worthy with my writing. To this end, at least 1500 words a week, no exceptions.

If I am sane enough, I'll be finishing my undergrad degree this year. So that's my resolutions -- a) be sane, and b) finish degree. I would like to lose weight and start exercising again, but I'm not setting any solid goals because I don't want to disappoint myself. Oh, and c) wear my trans guy gear more often. It makes me feel better about myself.

I've lost almost exactly 100 lbs over the last year.

My resolution is not to gain it back(in fat, at least. Weight gain from muscle is acceptable).

Really? I remember photos from you from a while ago (I don't remember exactly when) and you didn't look heavy to me. Huh. I guess you're one of those lucky people whose weight doesn't show up in their faces.

Congrats on the weight loss, regardless.

My only real resolution is to developing some hobbies to turn me into a more well-rounded and interesting person. I'd like to actually start doing photography instead of letting my DSLR slowly decompose in my closet, and I'd like to at least learn some rudimentary musical instrument skills. Piano lessons, ho!

My first priority is to get a better, higher-paying job. I have been concerned about what I would do if something should happen to my husband, and it looks as if that concern will be realized (and no, he's not deathly ill).
I want to keep on my diet for another 30 lbs of weight loss.
I want to participate regularly in dog agility trials (after the new job and the move that it will entail).

Yeah, it takes a lot of weight packed on me before it shows at all. At my heaviest I weighed 120 kg(264.5 lbs), and it showed. I was always told I "carried my weight well", though, whatever that means.

    And thank you!

    1. Finish my current album.
    2. Get more of my woodwork on display in stores and galleries.
    3. Clear my head in time for moving into our (almost) dream house in August.

I'm about to give some advice, but before I do, I'm going to ignore it myself.

My resolutions for the year are thus. First, write every day. Second, spend less time planning things and more time doing things - sadly in recent years I've discovered that when I spend too much time planning, finalizing the plan can feel like a real accomplishment, and then I never follow through. When I plan less and just act, I get the feeling of accomplishment after completion rather than at the end of the planning phase. That's it. Anyway, on to the advice...

If you are planning to "lose weight" or "get in shape", remember to stay S.M.A.R.T.

I'm seriously considering doing a kind of podcast for my blog. I've become aware of and networked with a few people with psychology backgrounds who are working in the games industry, plus there are academics making a career out of doing and publishing research on video games. I'm wondering how interesting it would be to record interviews and chats with them about how they got where they are and what they're doing. And maybe throw in another brief segment about an interesting, recent study along those lines from a scientific journal.

I'd probably commit to doing one podcast a month, maybe for 3 or 4 months to get a feel for how much work it is and how much I get out of it. Could be fun.

You could always go with a format similar to the way Star Talk does. Neil deGrasse Tyson interviews someone very knowledgeable on a subject, then for the podcast he cuts up the interview by top and bumpers the segments with him talking with a cohost/other guest. It allows for the central interview to be very serious and sometimes quite dry, while the bumpers are more fun (he mainly uses comedians as cohosts for that).

Losing weight/maintaining healthy patterns of eating and exercise aren't really resolutions, they are on-going.

I'm going to pick "Dressing better" (well, presenting myself better: including make up and accessories). It is part and parcel of caring for myself, which I need to do more of.
