There have been a few very thoughtful and constructive armchair design posts going on in the Qt3 FE thread (most notably in response to some of the blind praise and hype heaped on the game -- stuff just begging to be addressed). Those types of posts aren't particularly irksome to me though, but if they were I could easily see how the thread would significantly annoy. The most maddening part for me is seeing the subjects of some of these thoughtful constructive dissertations defended, debated and beaten to death on a point-for-point basis by folks who won't accept anything less than ceaseless admiration for the game.

But yea, I don't think the thread has benefited much since devolving into "It's breathtaking, so utterly amazing!", "Fails on so many, many levels, -- here's why, and here's why. Oh look, here's even more why!", "Obviously it's not for you, or you'd think it was better.", "It should have been for me, I've always been a fan of the types of games it's doing a piss poor job of ripping off!", "Your expectations are unfairly affecting your opinion!", "I just expected what was promised!", "It's everything I ever wanted in a video game, and more! And it was all freeeeee!!!! They did you a favor by releasing it!"

JoshV: The XCOM stuff here got a little annoying to me at times, but it wasn't too bad. Armchair designering is one of my favorite pastimes; it's just when people get entitled and whiny that I start getting irritated.

kerzain: Oh, I absolutely agree that there were some very thoughtful and constructive posts in that thread as well. There were also so, so much headdesk.

The thing that grinds me gears -- if only we had a thread for things like this! -- is gamers asking for shit that is just not at all feasible within the scope of a project. And I'm not even an engineer or a programmer, much less a producer. It's most common in MMO discussions ("why cant bliz fix AV lag yesterday just put more programmers on it, theyre just so lazy! unsubscribe!"), but all games get their share.
  3. JoshV Keeper of the Elemental Materials

Heh, I armchair design all the time, but worked in the industry for 9 years. I try not to come off as too whiny/entitled. =)

Since the Elemental Material joke is kind of old I've replaced it.

Oh yea, I can see this -- although not to the degree that someone like Charles sees it. But I'm certainly guilty of it too. My knee-jerk perceptions about certain games and such tend to be along these lines: "It's Apple's intention that iTunes suck on Windows machines, because if they gave a shit at all they'd spend some of their billions on addressing long standing issues that should be relatively simple for them to fix! They have so many resources at their disposal, the only explanation is that it's broken by design.", "Planetside 2 sucks, scrap it all and start over. I can't believe they're going to release it in its current state in a couple days, shameless greedy morons!"

    I'm working on it.
  6. Lum Fatbird

Actually I kept it but expanded out the titles since some of you make a lot of trophy points!

The only thing I armchair design is forum moderation. But that got me banned...

(this useless observation brought to you by my lazy need to see my new title immediately. LOVE it!)

I love all the posters who can get my really shitty snarky lame tongue in cheek stupid jokes because of how smart they are and despite how poorly I express them. One does *not* have to worry about being too subtle here (usually).

Also, even the "oh my God, this is the unmoderated people-gonna-say-shit-wear-your-flame-retardant-underwear" part of the forum is more readable, well behaved, and most importantly, informed, than most other moderated forums.

Oh! Haha! Yeah, no one seriously would.

Seriously, I love that everyone here is so laid back and just leaves room for any fool* to just get stupid sometimes.

I think there should be a super special club for people like Elyscape and I, who've had 'Chasing Angie' since the first day it existed. Not that I'm bragging, or anything. (I have to console myself, since I'll never, ever, EVER, get the 5000 posts trophy)

In fairness, I'm the only person who's spammed posted on the board enough to get that one. Aeon221, who has second place, still has about 350 posts to go.

I love that now when I go Over There I see posts by the likes of Sinij and Vetarnarias and realize that:

    A) They've found their home, a place where they can take all the verbal bowel movements they want and no one will ever do anything about it.
    B) The irony that the banned of BF end up Over There.
  23. madkevin Despondent Fancybear

Yeah, P&R really turned into a cesspool. I know most people thought of P&R as the red-headed stepchild of Qt3, but there were some great threads created there and some interesting conversations over the years. (The late Brian Rucker's threads on the Bush administrations war on science was a better source of information than most news agencies were.)

Well, we're almost up to a year since the 40 Days in the Desert, the Return, the Bannening, and the Exodus.

What will we do to mark the occasion?

Lum has to ban himself first for awhile, and then come back and ban people at random by misremembering their names.

Someone also has to dip their toe into "Fixed forum", say something stupid, leave in a self induced ball of "meh", then come back here and declare what a bunch of arseholes the new place is, added bonus if they blog about it too. Then the circle will be complete.
  30. extarbags Already Beat BF's New Expansion

To be fair it was pretty much a cesspool by the time we all came here for other reasons (hi Dawn Falcon). It is phenomenal that it completely emptied out the way it did though, and when the banned P&R posters of BF showed up there it was almost too cute to be believed.

I like to think that at various points in time, Elyscape chooses a victim poster, and stalks them, liking their posts a minute after the posts goes up.

Seriously I posted thrice in 10 minutes. 2 of them got Elyscape likes a minute after I posted.

    Is Elyscape my Santa?

  35. bloo Elitist Negative Nancy

I think we're in the midst of an Elyscape boom. It's "Peak Elyscape". When he stops liking so many posts, the scarcity will drive up the value, sure, but given the gross over-leveraging that Forum Street banks and investment houses are engaged in, with all selling of the trenches of bundled Likes and then betting against those products with Like Default Swaps, we could be in for a Like Recession if something happens to Elyscape. Plus all those Liar Likes have overinflated the value of posts, and Predatory Liking policies of fly-by-night Likeage Brokers - dangerous times. The entire Like Economy could be at risk! Who will foreclose on the Un-Liked properties? How will some post owners pay for their Under-Liked posts? Who Likes the Likers?

I hereby propose the Like Insurance Kourtesy Extension System (LIKES) bill, which will give me power to deploy an automated post-liking bot to the forum in the event of Elyscape's absence for one month or greater. All in favor?

    Yes, "kourtesy."
