    Odin Sphere's Theme

Odin Sphere is a gorgeous 2d action rpg developed by Vanillaware and published by Atlus in 2007.
You play the story of this game through the perspective of five different characters. This makes some area/boss repetition inevitable, but the story makes up for it.

This will obviously not be blind, as I've already played the game.
Sadly there's not really any audience participation in this game. You will eventually be voting on one thing, but that's near the end.
Seeing as the game's divided into chapters per character, I'll likely update one chapter at a time.

I do already have another LP going on, but thanks to some real-life-circumstances I'm putting it on temporary hold.

    No Spoilers.
If you want to talk about something later on in the game/story, make sure that you spoiler-tag it and mark it accordingly.

Also, if you have not played this game, and at some point decide that it seems interesting, buy it.
You may have to search a bit seeing as it's a Playstation 2 title, but it's definitely worth it.

    TextGuide:
Comments on gameplay will be in bold.
Comments on the game will be in cursive.
Descriptions of actions/events will be in normal text.
Text surrounded by "these" will be dialogue.
Text surrounded by (these), will be a character's thoughts.

This music plays in the Start Menu.

So let's start a new game.

The first thing you get to do is choose a difficulty. I'll be playing at normal, seeing as this game can be rather hard.

You can also choose whether you want the original Japanese voices or the English dub. I'm sticking with Japanese for now.

    Music:

So when starting a game you end up in this attic. The little girl's name is Alice, and in a weird way she's actually the protagonist of this game. But more on that later.
We are controlling Alice right now. However, the only things we can currently do is walk around or pick up stuff.
The cat's name is Sokrates, and seeing as all we can do is pick up things, let's pick him up.

    That does not look comfortable...
Anyway, we will sit down and snuggle with the cat.

This gives us the option of viewing the story archive, which looks like this.

As I mentioned earlier, we will play the same stretch of time with five different characters.
This is basically a time line that helps us keep track of things.
Every box represents a scene. Right now they're all grayed out because we haven't seen any yet.
Later we'll be able to re watch any scene we want here.
Boxes horizontally next to each other means that those events take place during the same time. For instance, at Nr. 9 we have three different scenes with three different characters, all taking place simultaneously.
The whole thing will be easier to understand after we've played a bit.

Furthest down on the time line we find this. This is actually the ending phase of the game, and I promise it will make sense, once we get there.
Let's return to the attic and pick up that book.

Each character is represented by a book, and you have to play through one to unlock another.
This book is called Valkyrie, and we'll be playing as Gwendolyn.
You can return to a book after finishing it if you want to level up a character before the endgame, I'm pretty sure that's why the stats are visible.

    It begins.

These things show up at the start of every book, and usually relates to the story/theme of said book.

As I said, the books are divided into chapters. This is the prelude/prolog.

We start on a image of an evening sky.
Then several dark shapes starts to fly across the screen.

It turns out to be a group of Valkyries.
Don't ask me how they're able to fly with those strange wings.

The Valkyries quickly land on the ground and take off running immediately.

The camera pans over a battlefield to a “bearclad/boarclad“ man and an armored unicorn fighting.
The unicorn lands the final blow and the man falls down.

Several fairies and some armored guys fly/run past the camera.

Unrelated note, I have no idea where the dead bodies all around came from, seeing as there's no sprites in the game even resembling them. Apparently that character got completely exterminated before the game even started.

    The screen fades out.

Edit: The following scene now has a video.

We rejoin the crowned Valkyrie as she finds a body.

The black bubble with dots are there to show which character is talking.

The crowned Valkyrie runs towards the body.

Yep, as you most likely know/have figured out, the crowned Valkyrie is Gwendolyn. Our first playable character.

Gwendolyn falls down on her knees and picks up Griselda.

[IMG] "The sound of battle... seems so far away..."
"It seems I cannot follow my King into the final battle."

    [IMG] "No...don't give up..."

[IMG] "I have no use for it now."

[IMG] "This spear has slain many foes,
    making a mountain of corpses..."
[IMG] "The King... Father will undoubtedly praise my actions."

    [IMG] "I'm sure he will..."

[IMG] "...Do I see tears in your eyes?"
    "You're too kind, sister."

    [IMG] "Please, do not cry..."
"Your older sister will leave the world as a great warrior."

    [IMG]"...'Tis so dark here..."

    [IMG] "Gwendolyn..."
    "I can't see you..."

    Griselda's body goes limp.

The screen fades out and we return to the battlefield.

The “bombdwarf“ and the viking are on the same team as the valkyrie are.

Suddenly a black shadow shows up and kills everything on screen before moving on.

The shadow then starts to fight with a bear/boar man.

The shadow is apparently well known among the bombdwarves.

[IMG] "Rumor has it he's made a deal with Halja to acquire such strength! What power...!"

    Gwendolyn come running in.

    [IMG] "I will face him!"

    [IMG] "Princess!?"

    [IMG] "You shall not!"

Gwendolyn ignores the bombdwarf and moves towards the shadow knight.

Who has suddenly turned less shadowy. The bear/boar dude is dead though.

The knight turns around and they both jump off screen to fight.

    Well... That didn't last long.

    [IMG] "Kill me now..."

[IMG] "How long do you intend to keep me pinned down?"

The knight jumps away to kill another bear/boar dude trying to sneak up.

    [IMG] "Go on. Run away."

[IMG] "This battle is over. Any more deaths will just be a waste."

This coming from a guy that killed another bear/boar guy just a second ago. Clearly this rule does not apply to everyone.

Now, this happens in the beginning of every book. Seeing as some characters handle differently then others, everyone gets a tutorial. Gwendolyn's tutorial gets all of the common moves as she's the first one. I will be explaining the gameplay-mechanics here, so if this bores you, jump ahead.
So, this is called a stage, and the goal for each stage is basically to defeat all the enemies.
In that way, it's more of a hack n'slash game.
First there's all the normal moves like run around, jump, attack etc.

You can do a combo by pressing the attack button 4 times in a row.

The thing that's unique with Gwendolyn is that she can glide.

She actually can't fly, it's just gliding. You do this by pressing the jump button twice.
You can also do an attack while gliding for more damage. This can be rather hard to aim however, so I don't recommend it for small or fast enemies.

Gwendolyn can also guard with her shield, although I will admit I never use this. I always forget guarding in games if it's not absolutely necessary.

When attacking an enemy you use up your energy, the green POW bar in the upper corner.
If this depletes completely you will get dizzy, and your character will stand around swaying until it has filled back up. You will not be able to do anything during this time. I assume this is here to prevent buttonmashing.

Phozons are what powers the crystal on our spear. Whenever you've killed an enemy you can press L1 and absorb all phozons in your vicinity. The more you get, the more your weapon will level up. You can see this through the blue number in the top left. That's our psypher level. Phozons will also help you fill up the blue bar next to the blue crystal in the top left. Every time it fills up, the number on the crystal goes one step higher. This determines how many psypher skills,(or magic) you're able to use.

For instance, the spell/skill cyclone, costs 1 blue crystal. So as soon as you've collected enough phozons, you can use it.
You get more skills as you level up your weapon.

I have now created a deadly cyclone that will travel a long way throughout the stage, injuring everything in it's way :)
Phozons do disappear over time, so you should try to get them as soon as you can. They also refill your POW-bar.

Occasionally, you will also find things you can pick up, usually at the end of a stage.
This is a note, which will go in our text archive for us to read.

    This one is about Phozons.

So apparently we're getting our power from the souls of those we've killed.
    That sounds completely healthy.

We also get a note on Psyphers.

The next thing to mention is food. Food is how you heal in this game. Food also gives you experience, which in time will level up your health. This is the yellow number in the upper left corner. Your health is otherwise always shown by the yellow bar and the numbers below. It's usually easier to level up your psypher than your health. So the levels will most likely not be even.

This particular food is a mulberry, and it will give us 20 health and 70 experience. Different foods also take different time to eat. The mulberry is eaten quickly.

Picking up items puts them in your backpack. To use an item you have to open the item ring and choose whatever item you want. You start out with two different backpacks, but you can buy more at certain vendors. You will need as many backpacks as possible, so I recommend buying them whenever you can.

We also get a new note about food.

So far, every text we've picked up have been a note. But as you can see there are a few other categories. These are Prophecy, Alchemy, Kitchen Menu and Cafe Menu. We'll learn more about those when we pick up text that belongs there.

Occasionally, you will also find a seed. Seeds grow with the help of phozons, and can be planted everywhere. This is a mulberry seed. It needs five phozons to grow and will give us two mulberrys when finished.
Seeds are a great way to get more food, as they're usually cheaper then the food they'll grow.

This is what the mulberry seed looks like when grown. You just have to attack the mulberrys to get them to drop to the ground. Then you can pick them up.

Now let's talk about the map. In the upper right corner you can see a mini-map of the area. The character we're playing is visible in white, and enemies are usually visible in green. The tiny white thing is a mulberry seed about to grow. As you can see in the previous picture, a grown seed gets humongous in the mini-map.

Every stage is shaped like a circle, which is represented by the circle in the lower right corner. The arrow is your character and the direction you're facing. The yellow dot represents an exit. You can't leave however, until you've cleared the stage.

This music plays whenever you've completed a stage:

When you clear a stage you, this shows up. Your score is calculated based on how long it took and how much damage you received.
1000 or above will give you a S.
900 or above will give you an A.
700 or above will give you an B.
400 or above will give you an C.
And lastly, anything below 400 will give you a D
If you go above the minimum limit for a grade the rest of your points carry over to the next stage.
So in the next stage I do, I'll get 74 points added to my score, seeing as I’m currently 74 points over the A-limit.
The ranking effects what you get in the end of the stage.

As a reward for completing a stage, you get a chest. The contents are decided by your ranking. The higher ranking, the more stuff you get. If you get a D, you only get the basic item for that stage.

This time I got some money, mulberries and a new note.

And that's the end of that tutorial.

We return to Gwendolyn entering a castle.

    Music:

Gwendolyn kneels in front of her father.

I would like to take this moment to talk about how everything in this scene is moving. Sadly, you can't see this through screen shots, but at any point during this game, there are at minimum three different things moving around in the background. During this scene, we've got the sky, the light/fog and every now and then a flock of birds pass by.
Not to mention the sprites. Despite being in 2d, their hair and clothes move quite a lot. Even when they're standing still you can see them breathing or blinking or making small gestures.
Ok, I'm done gushing about this right now. :) I'll try to get a video up some time.

[IMG] "Our troops have been lost."
"The foes had more reinforcements than we had anticipated."

[IMG] "We were forced to enter a battle of attrition."

I have no idea what this word means.

[IMG] "The Valkyries suffered many casualties...
    ...including Griselda, our commander."

[IMG] "I know of Griselda's fate."

The official art of Odin shows him with the helmet on, even though I don't think he wears it in game. Strange.

You sure that's a good idea?

[IMG] "I shall personally take part in this battle."

Indeed. It's just a shame that the game plays so poorly on the original hardware at times... thankfully, the PSN release clears up a good bit of the slowdown.

Speaking of Vanillaware titles, I'm also very excited for Dragon's Crown; even if the character designs are a bit... oddly proportioned, the game still looks really nice.

Hell, I'm excited for it mainly since it's a spiritual sequel to not only Princess Crown, but also because the art director worked on a damn fine 2D arcade fighter before. I really want to see the genre get some legs again,if only because I miss the awesome arcade games of the 90's.

At the start of every chapter you end up at a hub/home world. In Gwendolyn's case this is currently Odin's castle.

Here you can access the story-time-line we saw earlier. You can also save or change options.

We can also talk with some people that's hanging around in here.
    This Valkyrie for example.

    [IMG] "Princess!"
"We shall regroup with those able to fight."
"At the moment I have four soldiers ready."

    Four?? Seriously...
This does not sound like a good idea.
    [IMG] "Just say the word..."

[IMG] (We only have half the troops we started with...)
(Everyone is rushing to their deaths.)

    Gwendolyn agrees with me.
Also, you only had eight solders in the beginning?

    Let's talk to this bombdwarf.
By the way, Gwendolyn is not annoyed at the dwarf. I just caught her while blinking.

    [IMG] "Princess, that was close."

[IMG] "I had heard that the shadow knight looked like a demon, but..."

Well, he kind of did in shadow form.

[IMG] "He seemed human to me."
[IMG] "Why did he let you go?"

    No idea.

Now what the hell are you?

    That's my line...

[IMG] "Griselda's dead because she rushed ahead of the main forces."
"It's certainly not because I was late to the battle."

    ...I don't like you.

    [IMG] (Lord Brigan...

We can also eavesdrop on these dwarves by moving close to them.

[IMG] "That dastardly Queen of the Fairies..."
"She was the one that summoned the dragon."

    There was a dragon?

    [IMG] "That monstrous beast..."
    "She truly is evil."

We find another dwarf a little bit ahead.

[IMG] "That spear is a magical weapon called a Psypher."

    ...I know.

[IMG] "The dwarves fashion the crystals out of jewels and use them in the weapons."

Then why do you have bombs?

[IMG] "It absorbs magical elements called Phozons and is able to absorb and release them."
Stop telling me things I already know.

[IMG] "It will surely lead you to victory."

    Thanks, I guess.

There's one more dwarf in this castle.

[IMG] "That stone on your spear's a jewel from the Netherworld. Did you know that?"

[IMG] "Traveling from this world to the Netherworld..."
"It's very dangerous, and only one man is able to do it: King Odin."

[IMG] "If we can obtain that Cauldron and fabricate our own jewels..."

    Wait, what?

[IMG] "Ragnival will have no more enemies."

Ragnival is the kingdom we're in.

Ok, so this war is apparently about a cauldron that can make jewels. These jewels are then used to make Psyphers. Which are really powerful weapons.

    Well, hello strange bunny person.

[IMG] "I am worried about you... Please stay strong."

    [IMG] "Thank you, Myris..."

[IMG] "I shall bring some tea up to your room later."

And then there's this dude. Man this castle is full of people.

[IMG] "I'm a traveling vendor who has been allowed to sell in this castle."
    "Is there anything you need?"

Yep, this guy is our store.

His things aren't that interesting, but he does have this Saturn bangle which I like.

I also bought a couple of Hot Cross Buns.
They take a little longer to eat, but they heal more than the mulberries. Also, you only eat one half at a time, so really one bun will heal 100 hp.

As there are different countries/kingdoms in this game, you get different kinds of coins. Right now we only have titanium gold, which are worth 10 g each.

Come to think of it, I don't know why we get Titanian coins first considering the fact that there's currently an entire sea between us and Titania.

The vendors are all way too lazy to give you stuff and instead just throws it out for you to pick up.
That's all we can do here for now, so let's move out.

    Music:

This is the World-map, and as you can see we will be returning to the Battlegrounds.
    But first, a cutscene.

Gwendolyn is talking to a few Valkyries.

    [IMG] "We're moving out, now!"
    "Inform the troops!"

    The Valkyries run away.
    The screen turns darker.

    Music:

Suddenly a bird bathed in light appears.

    [IMG] "That's not true."
"I'm fighting for my kingdom and my own pride."

    She turns towards the bird.

[IMG] "If I fall in battle... that is a fate all my countrymen must face."

[IMG] "Don't try to hide the truth from me."

[IMG] "You seek death, so that you may earn the love you so desperately seek."

Gwendolyn tries to strike the bird, but the bird flies out of range.

[IMG] "I am but a phantom..."
    "I represent your innermost thoughts."

    The bird flies around Gwendolyn.

    [IMG] “I am pathetic.
I've never been loved since the day I was born.”

[IMG] "Giving your life for your father will not make your death worthwhile."
"You will simply die, like Griselda died."

    Gwendolyn falls to her knees.

This is when we start the actual gameplay. The goal is to complete every stage until you reach the boss.

The first stage is just a couple of fairyknights, so it's easy to get a S.
    We get a new note.

The next stage has new enemies. Flying Fairies. These green ones shoot arrows at you, but they're mostly just annoying.

The “end of stage chest” gives us the map for this place.
This in incredibly useful, and you usually want to find this as early as you can.

The map enables you to see the entire layout.
The stars represents the difficulty of that stage. The item next to the stars is the basic item that you always get, regardless of rank.
The shop-stages involve no battle and contains some sort of vendor.
The blue B-stages are mid-bosses, there is always two of these per chapter.
The purple B-stage is the main boss of the chapter.
You don't have to beat every stage if you don't want to. The only goal is to reach the boss.

We also get my favorite offensive potion.

This allows us to burn everything in our way. It's awesome. :)

In the next stage we find a butterfly. Butterflies are made of phozons and can therefore be absorbed. Just like phozons they will disappear, so absorb it as soon as you see it.

Cyclone is really useful for large groups of enemies.

We get a new potion. I'm not really fond of this one. It doesn't do as much damage as napalm, and I always tend to get hit by it.
We also get more notes about butterflies.

This Music Plays in this area's Shop-stages:

The first shop-stage have a bunch of stones that raise different stats, but I won't bother with them.
The luck stone increase the risk of an enemy dropping something and the spiritstone raise the amount of experience you get from absorbing phozons.

I do however buy one more bun for my new Ragnan Silver Coins. These are worth 1 G each and make much more sense for me to find.

You can also find other people to talk to in a shop-stage.

    Like this viking.

[IMG] "This base is under our control, but the enemy is stronger then we expected."

    [IMG] "We've entered a dead-lock."

    Or this Valkyrie.
I know Gwendolyn is just blinking in this shot. But her expression seems rather appropriate for the subject.

[IMG] "The general has sent us a message to fight strongly."

That doesn't sound like he intends to show up soon...

[IMG] (He's so late... What is he doing!?)

    Any suggestions, anyone?

    There's one more Valkyrie.

[IMG] "Abandon the base and assault the enemy with all our troops!"

[IMG] "Hurry! Send the order to attack to all units!"

And that's it for this stage.

Next stage has these pink Fairies. They are assholes.
They throw fireballs at you, and they can heal themselves and other fairies.

If you get hit by a fireball you get set on fire. The more fire you get hit with, the higher the level of the fire burning you will be. Fire will go out if you move a lot. Jumping and gliding works especially well.

There's also these dudes. These fairyknights have a shield, and will take almost no damage when using it. You best bet is to attack from behind.

New things! The Rosemile seed is essential for planting other seeds that require many phozons.

We also get this potion. I always sell this one.

    Onto a mini-boss!

This music plays in stages with a mini-boss:

The mini-boss for this area is the Unicorn Knight. We saw him fighting the bear/boar dude in the beginning cutscene.

This is a great place to use Napalm.

    Muhaha, Burn!
(The flower is a Rosemile I accidentally planted.)

The best tactic is to get behind the unicorn and then to start attacking him. His main attack involves backing up and then running towards you. This will knock you down, so try to avoid it.
He can also jump up and land on you. Run away as soon as you see him preparing to jump to avoid this.

Not too hard of a mini-boss overall.

    Over to the 5-star stage.

    Yeah, that's what I figured...

Most 5-star stages consist of three waves of enemies being thrown a you. All waves consist of large amounts of enemies so it's easy to be overwhelmed.

This means I only got this crystal.
This is quite useful, but sadly the fact that you can only have one equipped item at a time makes it useless for now. There will always be things you'd rather have equipped.

In the next shop-stage I find this goblin who claims he's neutral.
Sadly he doesn't have anything I want. Gwendolyn is already rather quick, and really don't like the draw ring. (It enables you to pick up stuff automatically. This makes it really easy to miss what you're actually getting.)

This is our current loading screen, by the way. The character running across the screen will always be the character you're controlling.

The best way to attack Fairies is to stand below and just throw your spear up in the air.

This will force them to come down, where it's much easier to attack them.

Regeneration is one of two potions that are crucial in the endgame.

This is the other one. Painkiller halves whatever damage you'd usually take from attacks.
We also get a new note, but it's basically just talking about the fact that you should think before you attack, so I won't include it.

And that's the last stage for now. To the boss battle!

    Music:

The green Fairy knights run towards the battle, but one of the silver ones return to talk to the queen.

[IMG] "The Aesir have launched an all-out assault."
"They are attacking our headquarters with all their soldiers!"

Sadly I have no image for the silver knight, so you'll have to manage with the green one.

[IMG] "The Paladins fight valiantly, but 'tis only a matter of time 'til they are overrun!"

    [IMG] "Here are your orders,
Quickly! Call back the troops from the front line and attack them from behind."

Apparently the queen is also aware of the best tactic for this game.

    [IMG] "Use everything we have."
"Attack from both sides and annihilate them!"

The knight starts to run away but gets struck down by Gwendolyn!

    Who does not look happy.

[IMG] "Prepare yourself, Queen of the Ghosts."

I must say, for a demon lord, Odin's castle is remarkably free of demons.

    [IMG] "Hahaha..."

[IMG] "It seems my reinforcements have arrived."

The queen flies up into the air.

    [IMG] "It's about time, Sorcerer."

A puff of smoke appears. Leaving behind a wizardly-looking dude.

Gwendolyn does not approve of random Sorcerers.

[IMG] "Come, Belial, my faithful dragon..."

    Oh, crap,
[IMG] "Let us put this to the test."
[IMG] "Do you still dare to speak so impudently before my mighty dragon?"

The screen moves away to show the massive dragon moving towards us.

    Eeeh...
    Nice dragon?

Time for our first boss battle.

    Boss Music:

Belial isn't really that hard. Most of the time he makes random crap fall from the sky, try not to get hit by this.

The best tactic is as always, attack from behind. He actually can't do anything to you if you're behind him.

Occasionally he will spit out a giant ball of garbage. You can see it on the mini-map. As long as you stay behind him, this is easy to avoid.

Eventually he will decide that enough stuff have fallen down, and will instead suck it up in his mouth. Once again, you can see him doing it on the mini-map. If you are behind him, you are safe.
    If you're not... Well.

It's really easy to get eaten. This means that Belial will keep you in his mouth for a while, with you taking damage constantly.

Eventually he gets tired of you and spits you out.

    Success!

Amusingly enough it happened right when my energy went out, that's why Gwendolyn's holding her head.

[IMG] "Have Brigan's troops hunt down any remaining enemy forces."

    He continues moving forward.

    [IMG] "Yes... There it is..".
    "The Crystallization Cauldron..."

    Man, that thing is ugly.
    And ridiculously large.

    [IMG] "Ooh..."

[IMG] "Do you see this mysterious light?"
    "Now it's finally mine."

[IMG] "This power will grant me victory in any battle."

Sounding a bit power-hungry there, Odin.

Suddenly the ground starts to shake and the cauldron's lights start to flicker.

The cauldron's lights turn white and then go out completely.
