Tokimeki Memorial General Thread

Saeki is practically Bomberman in every route that isn't his own. I've never done a single not-him route that didn't involve him bombing me at least twice.

Ah yes I've read that before. The problem is, when I've done that, I ended up with no one. The only way I've managed to get an ending is to fufill the requirements for both guys.

I don't remember having problems with Hazuki. But for someone who is supposed to be the 'cold' character, Saeki is surprisingly needy.

I TL;DRed a bit in my TMGS2 LP about my headcanon for why that's the case with Saeki. It basically comes down to the fact that with every other person around him aside from his grandfather, he has to exert a lot of effort to keep up appearances... but protagonist-chan already knows he's a jerk, so there's no need to pretend around her and that's really kind of relaxing for him. But of course he's a jerk to her so she doesn't want anything to do with him, and (unless you're actually dating him regularly) he can't figure out any ways around that other than "fake nice, which defeats the whole purpose" or "bomb threat."

Morimura is arguably even worse. If he's so shy according to Tsukishi, why can't I leave him alone for two minutes without him bombing me? Also, he's really got the mean disapproving look down for a shy nerd.

Hmmm...maybe not totally ignoring the other guy, but more focusing on the best friend? yeah, I have no clue honestly... :(

Yeah, in some ways, I never think Saeki as a cold character. He's this type of guy who may be known as cool and popular, but all of that is just a façade. That's not him. I can sympathise with that kind of character, but him being a jerk toward to protag-chan is just intolerable. That's just me~

Also Saeki kinda reminds me of that guy in Nobuta no Produce. I forgot his name...

TMGS1: Hazuki, Himuro, Jin
TMGS2 (of what I've seen through Joie de Combat's LP): Shiba, Hikami
TMGS3 (again, preference comes from view of LP which doesn't feature all of the characters): Seiji~, Niina

TMGS2 had a lot less characters that interested me. Pretty much all the guys in the third are appealing though. Konami improves with experience and age like everything.

Quick question for anyone who's finished Hibiya's route. I just had White Day pass, and Hibiya's gift was that damn idol's CD. I read on a guide that he's supposed to give you a pair of sunglasses. Is that only if you give him the high quality chocolates? Because I gave the little twerp perfect homemade chocolate and I received NO SUNGLASSES. Or is it actually a birthday present from him? I really wanna see what they look like D:

Favorites... geez, it's hard to pin down just one or two per game. Especially in 2 and 3 I like most of the characters.

TMGS1: Himuro, Mihara.
TMGS2: Shiba, Hikami.
TMGS3: Kouichi and, well, everybody from what I've seen so far. But mostly Kouichi.

TMGS1: Jin and Chiharu
TMGS2: Harry <3, Akagi, Masaki, Komori
TMGS3: Kenta, Seiji, KAREN <3

If I had to rank my favourites again it would be Kenta > Seiji = Akagi = Harry > Karen > Komori > Masaki > Jin > Chiharu.
I really like the secret characters, and Kenta is just a big ball of cute.

Prompt: Why is Jin a favorite of the majority of players (plus, I haven't seen any ragging of him on the internet which is unusual for the first game)?

I'll start us off with:
-The intelligence definitely factors in. He could be a top student if he tried. (And he wants to too)
-Influence protagonist has on his life. Everybody wants to feel like they're special to their LI.
-Friendly and flirty at the very beginning without being creepy. I don't usually go for this type but I know it's appealing to a lot of people. It's also necessary for a relationship developed mostly by chance meetings.
-DAT DRAGON SHIRT. You know it influenced your choice, don't lie.
-Loyal to his friends
-Companionship tone--you're taking the university test together and you studied together.
-Attractive physical design
-The part where you get to pick his hair color is cool.
-Momentary glasses

That's off the top of my head. Please delve further into any of the points if you wish. Analysis of popularity of any other Tokimeki characters would be fun too~

In the second game, my top three are (Hikami) Itaru, Kou(noshin aka Harry), and (Amachi) Shouta. BUT I LIKE AMACHI EVEN BETTER WITH HARUHI.

Why isn't that pairing canon, why? They'd be so cute together and their kids! God, their kids would be the cutest things ever.

You've covered pretty much everything, especially that awesome shirt. There's also the fact that his sprite was actually drawn for the DS version as opposed to somewhat-poorly downscaled from PS2 sprites and his character arc felt somewhat more down-to-earth, complete, and meaningful compared to the others in TMGS1 (in some sense it even feels like the prototype to what eventually became the Sakurai Bros.)

It's kind of dumb that the second game decided to make all the girls genderswapped clones of their respective love interests, as opposed to in the first game where they had more defined personalities of their own (Tamami is definitely not anything like Suzuka.) That's the one thing TMGS1 has over TMGS2 to me, the girls were a lot more interesting/appealing. Though I did like the implication that Tatsuko and Mizushima were rival sukeban back in middle school.

I kind of have to disagree with you there.

Haruru > Fujii any day

I wasn't really fond of Fujii and her ending didn't feel that satisfying to me because it was more about love and guys than it was about friendship, which sucked. Also, I didn't think Mizushima was very much like Chris. But yeah, I like most of the girls in GS2 better. Haruru is my favorite forever.

Not entirely true, according to Tsukushi's notes. He states that Suzuka is shy, like Tamami, but he just doesn't like to show it or doesn't know how to handle it, and tends to get angry in situations that make him feel shy or embarassed as a way of covering up his insecurities.

While I think that's true of Toudou/Shiba and Onoda/Hikami, I'm not so sure it's true of Mizushima. If you ever get some of the scenes between Mizushima and Onoda, Mizushima proves that she can be pretty damn manipulative. It's obvious Onoda is easily flattered, and Mizushima seems to know this as well and knows how to play her like a fiddle in order to get Onoda to do her homework for her. I have read in a walkthrough that getting her into rival mode can really show off her bad side and that she can be as scary as Toudou, but since I'm not very keen on manipulative people I tend to avoid her so I can't confirm this. Her being a sukeban would not surprise me at all, manipulative people tend to be good actors as well and I could see her getting other people to do her dirty work. The other thing that I don't like about Mizushima is that she calls Onoda Chobi-chan, which Onoda absolutely hates. It seems like Mizushima is calling her that as a way of subtly being insulting, which Onoda either forgives too easily or doesn't understand entirely.

Chris, on the other hand, doesn't strike me as the manipulative or subtly insulting type---he seems to be a bit spineless around girls so Mizushima would walk all over him. So far the only thing I see them having in common is an interest in the arts.

Haruhi and Hariya seem to me to be a repeat of Kijyou and Natsumi, so I haven't really tried getting Haruhi beyond :| or seeing any of her non-Hariya cutscenes.

I haven't done his route, but that never stopped me from trying to help someone before. :D

The guide I have says it's a White Day gift. My guess is that his affection wasn't high enough for you to get the sunglasses. It might be that his affection has to be :D or higher for you to get it, not just that you have to make him perfect homemade chocolate for Valentine's Day. Giving the high quality chocolate is actually a step down from the perfect homemade chocolate, and it can make the guy's affection drop instead.

That's because he's not a shy person. He only gets shy when he's being flirted with. Insecure, yes, but not shy.

I think what I like about the first game so much is that a lot of the characters appear to be a certain stereotype, but are actually a different one entirely. Kei appears to be a jerk, but he's actually socially awkward. Suzuka looks like a jock but he's actually sweet. The characters all go beyond what you expect and tend not to be pigeonholed into a single stereotype like a lot of characters are. I mean they all have stereotypes, but they tend to occupy at least 2 rather than a single one.

The 2nd one I feel the characters are more stereotypical, but then again I haven't played it nearly as much.

Maybe this is old news, but I just saw that they made an English announcement for the new Tokimemo Restaurant thing.
Is this normal for Konami, or does it hint at a release in the west?

Back to confirm that you get the sunglasses from Hibiya on your third birthday (since he isn't around for your first). Unfortunately, I set my birthday so late in the game that I only got to wear the sunglasses out on one date. Poop. Also, his ending is hilarious. And his route isn't actually all that bad, on the whole. It makes up for the fact that he got one of the most irritating voices out of the entire cast.

Hey, TM2 is actually pretty good for a 1999 game. It's even fully voiced, though given that it's a PSX game that means you're swapping discs like every hour. A first playthrough wasn't all that long and I only got mauled by a bear once.

I don't think I have it in me to do the forever alone bromance ending, though. Jun is the most adorable thing in a game about dating girls and I was more upset by him getting dumped than by me getting the wrong ending.

Can I just say that Hariya literally makes my kokoro go dokidoki.

Harry!! I'm playing through his route for the first time right now because I didn't think I'd like it but I actually really do. He's rapidly shooting up my list of favourite guys in TMGS2, though I'll reserve final judgement till I get his ending. He's just too cute with his tsundere behaviour and his response to protag-chan being ill is shoving her under a futon and praying before running out of her house.

(Shiba's still my favourite though.)

Is this the right place to declare my feelings about Suzuka because he is so hotblooded but intensely shy and has possibly the best CG event ever where YOU GET TO SCARE HIM BY PRETENDING TO BE A LION. My feelings are torn between laughter and taking him home like he's a lost puppy.

Skipping in here briefly because I'm working on Mizuki's route in TMGS1 right now.

Re: bombs? Hazuki. Hibiya and Morimura have never bombed me, interestingly, but Hazuki bombs me on a near-weekly basis. Just leave me to my girlfriend god Hazuki.

I thought if you were going after the girls it didn't matter if you let bombs explode? Or is that only the secret characters like Jin?

I let one explode and it set off EVERYONE ELSE but Himuro. So basically I'm just monitoring them so that I don't have nuclear warfare going on because I'm ignoring everyone.

What are your stats? Morimura likes you if you have high intelligence which makes him want more attention (and since I insist on perfection since it's just button pushing for grades...) and Hibiya is probably overall. I don't mind bomb dates with Hazuki honestly.

This run has pretty low intelligence, but even when I was going for Himuro he never really bothered me. Hazuki has always been the problem, which kind of sucks because I like Morimura and really dislike Hazuki. At least as a love interest.

Himuro never bombs. He's a teacher.
