I'm sorry, but the Dark Souls thing is dumb. Are we going to have a new one for every game that gets big? And this new approach is not mobile browsing friendly. I don't need another layer of menus to dig through.
fwiw I agree. To many subforums. Also I'll say this: were Dark Souls relegated to its own forum, I likely never would have developed an interest in it. Seeing a big active thread in Games (a forum I frequently keep an eye on) is what's got me close to buying that game.
This crazy subforuming might prevent someone who was close to buying a game from buying a game because it got subforumed! He was *this* close to buying it!
No kidding. Hell, I don't even use the "What's New" functionality, and the multiple forums aren't a problem. How can people honestly have a strong opinion on this?
Because, if Dark Souls has enough -- what, interest? (It's certainly not threads!) -- to warrant its own subforum, why not for other games?
If the Dark Souls forum were just changed to an Overly Specific Threads About Certain Games forum, then the problem would be solved, no? The main threads would stay in the PC/Console Gaming forum, and things like WHAT BUILD SHOULD I USE would go in the OSTACG forum.
Eh, I think it's fine the way it is now. Scrolling a bit around in the main index isn't so big a hassle that I'd consider writing an indignant post about it. I do agree having a subforum solely devoted to Demon's/Dark Souls is a bit over the top(even though I adore the games) though. Elyscape's suggestion seems sound.
Look all the new threads springing forth in that forum. It's as if people suddenly unafraid to clutter the main games forum are making more specific threads on the game - not only is that forum better for having the discussions spread out and easy to find, but the main game forum is less cluttered, so those not playing the game aren't bothered by all the threads. And those of us using the "What's new?"-button can just ignore the forum entirely. It's great and yes, more games should have their own subforums. Of course it's up to the discretion of Lum which, but I'm sure he's open to reasonable suggestions. Civ V could be one - right now we have at least 8 multiplayer games going - strategy and diplomacy for those are mixed together in two threads, not by any conscious design, but I just think the players are too polite to make 8+ threads on one game in the catch all forums.
I was a bit surprised to see a sub-forum for just one game. but I have to admit I wasn't quite aware of it's popularity here. If it's needed, then that is fine. I can imagine other games could have their own sub-forum as well, games like Skyrim, Diablo 3, and Guild wars 2 probably could have done with it when they came out. Lum can always merge them back in with the normal games forum if interest wears off and people aren't really posting much any more.
I would welcome a way to rearrange the main forum index page for myself - I mostly start with January when I open BF which gets pushed lower and lower. With such system I wouldn't care about the growing numbers of subforums. And don't tell me to filter it in What's new, I don't use that.
I think it's more diffused responsibility and lack of motivation. The League forum is slow enough that it could handle 8 more threads no problem. There's what, two posts a day in there?
If this happens, that forum NEEDS tags. Like, really really needs them, more than anything else does.
True. I forgot that we already have a forum, that we can spam with new Civ-threads without worry. The reason I don't start any is that I can write the same in all my Civ V-threads: "Help me, Deadbuffalo is being a meanie...!"
I don't think this is too dramatic a change, really. I'm totally OK with Lum's idea of having people only being allowed to talk about Dark Souls in a specific subforum.
What's kind of funny about all this is that it's *not* that popular around here. There's like 5 or 6 of us that just chatter endlessly about it. Although we are few, we do like to ramble.
No. Never. I will drive to the server farm, blow it up, then drive to Lum's house and set it on fire. ON FIRE, DO YOU HEAR ME? YOU KEEP THAT SICKNESS SEQUESTERED!
I hate to be a wet blanket, but the new forum view is stabbing my fucking eyeballs with disjointed ugliness. Too many forum subcategories, now I have to scroll to see them all even on a 1200 pixel high screen. Games and We Play Games should just be Games. It seems silly to make a distinction between two slightly different sections of game discussion. Dark Souls subforum - Seriously, this is an epic troll, right? A few forum threads does not a subforum justify. When you remove a specific game and quarantine it like that, you reduce the chance of somebody in the general forum stumbling across it. We Are Frustrated By Current Events, We Are Amused, We Do Other Things, We Do Our Own Thing - This is "Not Games." We can call that "Other Stuff," "Everything Else," "Non Gaming," I don't care call it Suzy if it makes you happy. But we don't need to create separate subforum categories for these things, that serves no purpose. There, I just reduced the number of lines from 21 to 16, and it should fit on a 1200 pixel high screen. You're welcome. Some of us like to browse the forums by specific subcategory and making more categories just adds more places for us to have to check for relevant topics. I would love this feature so much.
Granted, it's a new subforum, but eight total discussions (of which two are not meaningful) doesn't really stand out as a major need. Sure, if there's more space posters will take advantage of it, but I doubt that subforum will ever have as many threads as any of the other subforums. That's great. What about those of us who don't? You could do it for Civ V, XCom, Far Cry 3, Diablo 3, Crusader Kings... oh hey look, five more new subforums. Oh joy. You're right that the organization of the subforums shouldn't be stifling discussion, but making subforum after subforum for each game doesn't seem optimal.
You know what would be useful? A subforum for passive-aggressive snarkiness. That would get serious traffic.
Can we get an Eador: Genesis subforum? The discussion is really cluttering things up. Also, a Battletech: Crescent Hawk's Inception subforum. And one for Renegade Legion: Interceptor.
As long as there's a forum for Gravy Trader, I don't give a shit what the rest of you mouthbreathers do.
You could start a betting game on which 2013 release will be so popular with Broken Forum users that it requires its own sub forum.
A new feature that is semi-hidden if you don't use the default theme until I figure out how to fix the display... click the rightmost part of the category header to collapse that category. Collapsed states will persist if you collapse a category, so if you NEVER WANT TO SEE POLITICS AGAIN just collapse the category.
