When a laptop touchpad starts getting sluggish and non-responsive, is that typically a software/driver problem or the beginnings of a hardware failure? Thanks!

    Probably hardware.

Does it happen with an external usb mouse if you plug it in?

    Also what OS?

Have you tried uninstalling it from the Device Manager and re-installing it?

    OS: Windows 7
I haven't tried uninstalling it, but I did update the driver, which improved the situation a little.

UPDATE: Here at my desk, which is where I usually use this laptop (with a BT mouse), the touchpad is working great. I was in the den the other night without the mouse (I also turned BT off) when I was having so much trouble. I wonder if something in there was interfering. Weird.
